Phoenix Place and environs, Wednesday early evening

After leaving Kenzi a voicemail message, Cecil herded Marjorie (licensed practicing exorcist and curse-removal expert) toward the house formerly known as DOOMHAUS.

"And we do have the owner's permission?" she asked to verify.

"Yep! But, um - try to keep down any property damage, okay?"

She ignored his hopeful wince. "In writing?" she held out her hand.

Cecil looked at her in dismay. "You didn't say I needed it in writing! But he said okay, I swear!"

Marjorie sighed. "Fine. That's a different form." She opened her smart leather portfolio and pulled out a stack of papers. "Sign here to indicate you speak as an approved representative of the owner. Initial here to affirm that you are aware that, while we strive to minimize damage, some alterations to the condition of the premises may be unavoidable. Sign here to release my firm from any legal responsibility for those alterations beyond exercising due care." She gave him a sharp look. "And don't bother with the pun, I've heard it before."

Cecil closed his mouth sheepishly.

Marjorie rolled her eyes. "I hope you appreciate I'm putting a lot on the line for you, Cecil. Strictly speaking, I'm not even licensed in Maryland."

"I checked!" Cecil protested, shrugging. "They don't seem to have any sort of licensing board. And I'm not really sure if the island's part of Maryland, anyway."

Marjorie grimaced and muttered something about unlicensed chaos. "Well, best get started. Don't interrupt; if you need anything, it'll have to wait till after."

"Got it!" Cecil assured her.

Marjorie started pacing around the grounds, as Cecil waited at the gate.

[OOC: For Kenzi if she wants to show, or anyone else who wants to drop by and watch. It won't be very interesting. *g*]

Kenzi did, in fact, want to see this. And while she trusted Cecil to find a decent exorcist, she kind of wanted to know they were real by meeting them herself.

"Is she here? How is it going? Do I need to do anything?" she asked, bouncing up and looking hopeful.

"Hi, Kenzi!" Cecil grinned and bounced back. "She's..." he looked around. "Um...there!" He caught a glimpse of Marjorie's fashionable lavender blouse through the trees. "All we're supposed to do, though, is stay out of the way."

"How did you find her? I forgot to ask in all the 'wheee, curse lifted!'" Kenzi said, staying where she was, although still almost dancing in place.

"Oh, I just asked around a bit. Looked in the yellow pages. Checked out the Night Vale Business Association. Turns out, this is the best firm in town, and Marjorie's their curse specialist! We went to school together," he confided. "I helped save her from a spiderwolf - the actual wolf, not the athlete - once. Well, I was nearby and a lot of us shot it, anyway. So she sort of owed me one."

Kenzi grinned hugely at that. "So she knew you when you were this age the first time? Cool. I'm gonna have to hit her up for stories." Kenzi leaned against the fence, craning her neck. "I need to figure out something nice for Dr. Lecter, letting us do this."

"I was pretty boring in high school," Cecil said with a shrug.

You know, for Night Vale.

"You could...um." He shrugged again. "I'm not sure what he likes, except for food and music." What did you get someone for a fairly impersonal thank-you gift? "Maybe a shrunken head?"

"You think he'd want one of those?" Kenzi looked thoughtful. "I bet I could get him a cool one... Or maybe a gift certificate to Groovy Tunes." He liked hanging out with Jono anyway. More excuses to do so. "And I'll treat your buddy Marjorie to lunch anywhere she wants on the island."

"She'd like that," Cecil answered, smiling. "Take her someplace they have wheat or wheat by-products; it'll be a real treat!"

"JGOB's it is," Kenzi decided. "I'm in a muffin mood anyway."

"Yum! Should I come along, or leave you two alone?" Cecil teased. What? They were both single and neat.

Marjorie joined them before Kenzi could answer, dusting off her hands as she came back to the gate. She nodded at them both. "You're Kenzi?" she stuck out her hand to shake.

Kenzi snickered at him, shaking her head, then nodding when Marjorie came forward. "Yup!" She held out her hand. "Thank you so much for doing this! Doom was a real headcase."

"Anyone named Doom..." Marjorie rolled her eyes. "It was a pretty nasty piece of work, but I got it." She waved Kenzi into the courtyard.

Cecil cheered. "Awesome! I knew you could do it."

Kenzi skipped into the courtyard, then had to clap her hands over her ears.

BEEE WOOO BEEEEWOOOO BWWEEEE OOOOOO

...because the alarm going off was trying to make her deaf.

Cecil looked similarly pained, and gave Marjorie a look as he shooed Kenzi back outside. "I thought you said you got it!"

"I did!" Marjorie answered, affronted. "The place didn't fall down, did it?" She waved at the still-standing house. "Not even a tremor!"

"But, but--!" Kenzi made grabby-hands at the house from over the fence, and set off the alarm again for a couple seconds before she took a few steps back. "I'll never be able to move in. Damnit, Doom!"

Marjorie sighed. "Okay, give me a minute. And I expect something extra nice for this, Cecil!"

"She'll take you out for muffins!" Cecil called after her retreating back.

"And honey butter!" Kenzi added after that, then indulged herself in a small tantrum of jumping up and down. "If. I. Knew. Where. Latveria. Was. I. Would. Find. Him. And. Kick. His. ASS!"

"I'm sure she'll get this taken care of, too," Cecil said soothingly. "And we could probably find it on a map somewhere?"

"Yeah. Maybe?" Kenzi frowned. "I could take a selfie of myself on the roof when we get this straightened out!... Except maybe then he'd come back and re-curse it." She sighed and flopped down on the grass, pouting at the building. "Isn't it a cool place though? Don't you think I deserve it?"

"Definitely!" Cecil agreed, flopping down next to her. "I bet you'd make it even cooler, too."

Sorry, Hannibal.

"Yes I would, damnit." Kenzi sighed and flopped her head onto Cecil's shoulder. "So boo. Wah. Anyway. You're sticking around all summer? I hope?"

"Oh, yes. Need to get in all the growing time I can," Cecil answered. "Besides, there's some...stuff...going on at home, and ♥Carlos♥ is all, 'you're safer there, Cecil!'"

"Because you are," Marjorie answered, joining them. She did not flop on the ground; her stylish trousers weren't really designed to repel grass stains. She sighed. "I can take the alarm off, too, but there's a little catch."

"What kind of stuff?" Kenzi aked, before the second part of what Marjorie said had sunk in, and she bounced to her feet. "Catch?"

"Oh, just the usual city rivalries." Cecil rolled his eyes. "He's just overreacting. What's the catch?"

Marjorie grimaced. "The destruction spell was pretty big. All that energy has to go someplace, right? I mean, you did pass basic thaumaturgy, albeit with a little help," she needled Cecil.

"I cheated," he corrected her. "Got my scout badge for it! So where did you put it?"

"In the ground, the house, wherever it'd go," Marjorie answered with a shrug. "But it's not going to hold much more. If I just break the alarm curse, too, it might take down the house anyway."

"Nooooooooo!" Kenzi protested. "Pretty house! MY house... someday." She slumped. "But it'll never be mine if that alarm makes me deaf before I'm thirty, jeez."

"The other option is just to change it instead of breaking it," Marjorie said, eyeing Kenzi a bit quizzically. "Just leave the energy as-is, and we'll even use a bit up."

"Can we change it to be not so...alarm-y?" Cecil asked, waving his hand vaguely at the grounds.

"We can probably bring the volume down a bit," Marjorie answered. "And maybe change the sound. If you can think of something soothing, or at least non-alarming. Maybe a favorite person's laugh or ringtone?"

Kenzi stopped pouting, and started to brighten. "Oooo. Like an announcement instead? 'Kenzi the Magnificent has arrived!'"

Cecil laughed. "Pomp and Circumstance!"

"Ahahahha!" Kenzi clapped her hands. "Can I pick anything? Really? And it won't keep playing forever every time I'm on the property, just when I first show up?"

"Yeees..." Marjorie seemed a bit wary of agreeing to that.

"Oo, it should be something really important and wonderful, then!" Cecil declared.

"Q.U.E.E.N. by Janelle MonÁe!" Kenzi said, dancing in place. "Do you need me to get you a copy?"

"Yes, I think so." Marjorie seemed a bit dubious.

Cecil was just curious. "Oo, I don't think I know that one."

Kenzi therefore gave them an impromtu rendition (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEddixS-UoU&feature=kp) of it. Not as good as Janelle, sure, but still!

Marjorie stared at her.

Cecil, after a bit of searching and some tangential dead-ends, pulled a copy of the song up on iTunes. "Oo, neat! Here!" He thrust his phone out to Marjorie, who took it and nodded. "Be right back." She walked off to a point near the edge of the grounds, playing the song and muttering.
