The park, Thursday afternoon

Bob had spent yesterday back home helping Harry, and had completely missed the shrieking eels. He wasn't exactly disappointed about that, no. He'd made sure to get back by this afternoon, though, because he had an appointment with Anders, to see what the boy could do.

So, he was out in the park, enjoying being outside again, ignoring the still-faintly-eely smell, and waiting.

Anders arrived a few minutes after Bob, looking cheerfully determined.

"Too bad you weren't around yesterday," he said, by way of greeting. "I got to use this stuff on actual attackers."

Which were eels.

"The people at the portal office mentioned flying eels?" Bob asked. "What were they after?"

"I haven't the faintest," Anders admitted, smile dimming a bit. "It's a bit worrisome, actually. Someone must have set them loose and kitted them out but I don't know who."

"Kitted them out?" Bob stared at him blankly for a moment, then shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Never mind. I probably don't want to know. You got to use a bit of magic, though?"

"You probably don't," Anders agreed wearily. "And yes, I did. they didn't like freezing much."

"Most living things don't," Bob said. "Show me freezing, then." He turned around and settled on the pond after a moment. "How much of that can you freeze, and how precisely?"

Nathan had been on his way back from the preserve when he came upon this sight in the park. He couldn't not stop and check it out, either. So, he found a bench and watched quietly.

"We should shoo the flamingos first," Anders pointed out, and did that with a lot of shouting and some staff-waving. Either he'd scared the flamingos or they didn't want to deal with the crazy person: Whichever it was, they were gone.

And then he drew a deep breath, closed his eyes, and found his focus. He world went silent to him as he aimed a very precise blast of ice at the edge of the pond, freezing a crescent-shaped chunk of ice that went about a third of the way around the pond before trailing off into slush.

Bob knelt by the side of the pond and put his hand out, assessing how deep the ice was and whether it retained any active magic.

"How far without your staff?" he asked. "And are you straining at all for this, or is it full comfortable strength?"

It was a solid half-inch of ice, and not one with any particular magical powers.

"Full strength," Anders confirmed. "I could probably do the same another four or five times before I needed to take a rest. Without the staff .... I'm not sure."

He looked vaguely mischievous as he smiled up at Bob. "Want me to melt the ice so we can see?"

Anders came over during one of his breaks and reached to give Nathan's hand a squeeze. "I'm glad you're here. Especially since I haven't embarrassed myself too badly yet."

"How did this all come about?" Nathan asked him, returning the squeeze. "Is it helping?"

"He asked me to stay after Tuesday and wanted to see what I could do," Anders explained, nodding to Bob. "I'm not sure it's helping unless the goal is scaring flamingos, but it's fun?"

Bob smirked back at him. "I was going to have you do it after. Go on, then." He stepped back, as much to have a better look as to get out of the way.

"Fun's a good thing," Nathan agreed, nodding. "Is he teaching you anything?"

"I'm so glad you said that," Anders laughed, and used his staff to summon a jet of flame that thawed the pond and only scorched a few blades of grass at its edge in the process. "Fire's harder to control, but I always like the danger a little."

Anders seemed to give the question some thought. "Not in terms of spells or -- whatever," he said. "Not yet. But just having someone I can practice with who knows a bit about what I do is good for me, I think. Keeps me from getting lazy."

"Mm." Bob nodded. "the more fluid the energy, the more it takes to contain it all. That's good control, though."

"That's definitely good to have," Nathan told him, smiling again. "And if you're able to get spells off that don't hurt someone, all the better. No need to be careful and such."

"You learn it fast, if you're training in a room of 20 apprentices," Anders told him. "The enchanters drill it into us. They have the strangest prejudice against us setting each others' hair on fire."

"I can't imagine why!" Bob answered, mock-affronted.

"Are there many mages in your world, then? A wizard or sorcerer in mine is unlikely to ever have more than one or two apprentices at most."
