Needful Things, Wednesday Afternoon

Every little town was different, but in the end, every little town was the same. It was like hearing the same song in a slightly different key, or played on a new instrument. The variations were fascinating, but the chorus didn't change.

His plans were progressing ever-so-nicely. Perhaps more of these residents could be lured in by his items, today?

Wednesday is trying to kill me.

Kenzi snuck out of the diner on one of her breaks, and headed for the shop with the bag containing Roland's harp (well, soon to be someone else's harp) over her shoulder. She was kind of regretting this whole plan. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea... she could always go, 'find' it under a cabinet or behind a chair or something. Maybe.

"Hey. How's it going?" Be cool, Kenzi.

Today was pretty boring so Travis had been in town, skateboarding until it'd started to rain. Then, he'd hefted the board up and started walking back.

On the way, he pushed open the door of a shop he'd never been in before just to see what was inside.

"Ah, Ms. Kenzi," Leland said, offering her a very professional smile. "Just the person I had hoped to see today. Please, do come in."

He was gesturing her over towards the jewelry cabinet behind the counter. Surely she remembered the one ...

She did indeed. Carefully, she unslung the bag and put it at her feet, leaning on the counter. "I was wondering if I could look at that again? Because I may have something here, but... I don't know. It might be worth more than the ring."

Or rather, not getting on Bo's and Roland's bad sides, for swiping something from a friend, might be worth a tiny bit more.

"Welcome, welcome, welcome!" Leland said brightly. "You must forgive my enthusiasm, but I am an eager shopkeeper who loves nothing more than a new face. Please do come in and sample my wares."

It was hard not to be giddy. This town made life far too easy.

"Of course," Leland said, solemnly. "It is important in all exchanges for both sides to feel they have made a fair deal. I will likewise need to see your item before I can decide if it is worth my ring."

As he spoke, he was unlocking the cabinet and selecting a filigree silver ring (http://gryphonsmoon.com/cat/jewelry/rings/filigree-chevron-ring.jpg). He laid it on his palm and held it out for Kenzi to see. He would move his hand if she tried to take it; better not to have her brush against his skin, and feel that unsettling chill.

Besides, she hadn't paid yet.

There was a whole shop on the island that Pinkie hadn't visited yet? There was a whole shop on the island that Pinkie hadn't visited yet. And a new person! OHMIGOSH IT WAS SO EXCITING!

Pinkie trotted gleefully into the shop, looking around for the proprietor to give him a proper Fandom pony welcome. "Hellooooooo!" she called. "Mr. Proprieterrrrrrrr!"

Kenzi barely managed not to whine with want shiny! when she saw it again. It was so perfect, and she could think of so many things to do with it--

her hand reached for it without her full volition, just fixated on the thing that could make all those plans into reality.

"Hellooooo!" Leland Gaunt called out, laughing with delight at his newest customer's bright mood. "Welcome to my shop, Miss Customer! All customers are welcome, here, but especially those who bring joy with them!"

"What're you selling?" he wondered, lifting the skateboard over one shoulder to look around. "I've never been in here before. Never even knew this place was open."

If Pinkie were less of a children's character, she'd've answered that with "HOT DAMN!" It was so rare to find humans as enthusiastic as a proper pony could be! (It was admittedly pretty hard to find ponies as enthusiastic as a proper Pinkie could be.) "Well you're in luck then!" Pinkie said instead. "'Cause joy is what I does. I'm Pinkie Pie!" she offered her hoof. "What's your name?"

"Ah, ah, ah," he said, closing his hand and pulling it away quickly. "You've seen it. If you need a demonstration of its abilities again, I would be happy to provide. But surely you understand I cannot let you sample it for yourself with our purchase unresolved."

After all, she could easily dart out of here with the ring.

Not that he cared much if she stole it, but appearances had to be maintained.

"What am I selling?" Leland scoffed, his mood amused. "I sell whatever it is that I find. I sell the rare, the priceless, the unusual. I sell the mundane, and the unbelievable sitting next to it on a shelf. I sell magical trinkets and wonders to behold. This is Needful Things, and I am your humble servant, Leland Gaunt."

He finished that off with a bow.

Kenzi got a grip on herself, cursing the slip that showed him how much she wanted that ring. "No, no. That's fair. I trust you."

Well, you know. For as much as she trusted any guy in retail. (Not at all.)

"But I really do think that what I have here might be extra-special..." Time to regain some ground with her own saleswoman patter. "You in the market for magic instruments?"

"I am very grateful for your joy, Miss Pie," Leland said, bowing deeply. "You must forgive me, as I do not shake hands, nor hooves. Would that I could."

He allowed a wistful expression to flit across his face, suggesting some mysterious ailment that prevented him from physical contact. Best to leave the specifics vague.

"Is joy your profession?" he asked. "A happy job indeed."

"Mmmm, I could be," Leland said, allowing a flicker of a smile to betray his interest. He had to act unconvinced, of course; it was all a part of the dance. "Legitimately magical is good. It will depend on how magical. A flute that has simply been charmed to play 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' over and over again is magical, but not terribly impressive, after all."

"Sorta!" Pinkie said, not in the least offended by the lack of hoof-shaking. "Well, I mean, I teach cake decorating with my best friend right now up at the high school, but back home in Equestria I use the element of Laughter to fight the forces of disharmony and evil."

"Seriously? Who would even bother? You can get a music box that does that." Kenzi pfftt'd that away, and lifted the bag onto the counter. Sheet music, cleaning supplies, extra strings... and a case with the harp in it. "Nope. I'm talking a harp. A bard's harp. Prime condition."

"That's the most impressive sales pitch I've seen in years," Travis said, unable not to smile. "I'm Travis, it's good to meet you, Mr. Gaunt. Not sure if I'm really your target audience but the place seems cool."

Well, sure, new store, hey, whatever. Joker stopped by with the idea that maybe he could pick up something nice for Eleanor. He wasn't entirely sure what he was looking for, but he quickly gravitated toward the jewelry. Some of it looked pretty nice.

"A bard's harp," Leland replied, the smile leaking into his voice. "Functional, working, and recently used, I might imagine."

He reached his hands out to brush over the bag, then turned pleased eyes to his customer.

"You are a resourceful young lady," he said. "Might I see it?"

"I have no target audience," he said grandly, straightening up and adjusting his jacket. "Some think that antiques are just for the old, the snobby, the gentrified. But I sell mystical items beyond your mind's perception, and those are for any who can dream."

He offered a bit of a wry smile after that. "You see?" he said. "I have more patter where that came from."
