The shop had amped the craziness up just in time for Alana's shift again. Last week, it had been pumpkin spice: This week, some paper bats that had been hung as Halloween decorations were fluttering about the store, landing on the tops of bookshelves and occasionally dipping down to zoom in front of Alana.
She wondered if it was some kind of wing joke, but discounted the possibility on the theory jokes were traditionally at least a little funny. Instead, she chased down the bats she could with a net and let them go outside. A few remained high in the store rafters; Alana put on a hat to keep them out of her hair and ignored them as best she could.
