Luke's, Thursday Afternoon

There were women in big hats in the diner today when Hardison walked in. Big, colorful church hats, the kind that Hardison remembered vividly from his childhood with Nana. Hell, Parker had given his Nana a purple one in a similar vein when they'd met up this fall. In fact, Hardison couldn't help looking over the group congregating in a booth just to make sure his Nana wasn't there, talking about Holy Thursday and Easter preparations.

That was when he realized he wasn't looking at women in hats, or anything nearly so explicable. Nope, they were just hats, clustered around a table, plates of food in front of them, the faint sound he'd taken for talking actually the rustling of fabric and the chiming of accessories.

Well...okay then. This was new and weird and altogether disturbing. Fortunately, the busboy seemed to have it all under control, stepping up at that moment to offer more refills on sweet tea or peach sangria.

At least that gave Hardison enough time to sidle into the kitchen and ask Cookie what the hell was going on. The dishwasher told him to watch him mouth when there were church-goin' folk present and the cook just shrugged and said this was hardly the weirdest thing he'd seen in the dinner this week.

Hardison had to reluctantly agree with that, so he helped himself to a plate of the Specials and tried to be subtle about watching the hats. Did they actually eat anything? Was this all play-acting?

THIS ISLAND.
