It's a very Mondayish Monday if that makes sense?

Sparkle had been more than a little bit out of it since last weekend, but it occurred to him today that it had been a while since he'd checked in on any of his employees. And given how last weekend had gone...

Well, now that he was upright and pretending to be a functional human being again, he was making his way in to the Demon Marcus and seeking out his littlest diva. And if he had a pair of hot chocolates in hand, hey, you needed something to rinse down that gingerbread with, right?

"Knock knock! Anybody home?"

She was never going to turn down chocolate...

"I'm here! I'm here!" she said, waving her, well. Her boa at him from the counter. "We're having a gingerbread party!"

... don't look too hard at the door leading to the back room, Sparkle.

Gingerbread buildings looked pretty cool. And might even taste good. But they were definitely not ideal surfaces for AirTrek work. Which meant that Ringo had had to settle for relatively tame rides through the streets of town, which, in turn, hadn't been enough to keep her body temperature at a reasonable level.

Because it was cold.

So she ducked into Demon Marcus with half a mind to warm up a bit, and half a mind to get some more layers.

And half a mind to say hi to Alluka.

"Hey! Alluka!"

"Ringo, hi!" Alluka waved from the counter. "Oh--brr! You look cold!"

She was just going to start Ringo a cup of tea without having been asked.

"The whole island looks like it's having a gingerbread party today," Sparkle laughed, lifting one of the drinks toward her in a pseudo wave. "Pretty awesome, huh? Did you save me any?"

Doors were overrated anyhow. Just so long as she wasn't taking apart a load-bearing wall or something, Sparkle was cool with this.

"I can share," she said, beaming. "Or, or there's more of the door."

He could have his own giant piece of door if he really wanted.

Mmmm, delicious door.

"You know, I think I will totally help myself to some door," Sparkle laughed. "But I'm going to need someone who can help me with this extra hot chocolate, if I do. Two was enough for me before the gingerbread, but it's gonna be way too much after, you know?"

She giggled.

"I think I have room for hot chocolate," she said hopefully.

"Room for hot chocolate and extra whipped cream?"

Sparkle had to be absolutely sure, okay?

"Just a little bit," Ringo laughed. Though even bundled up her cheeks were bright red from exposure.

She grinned at Alluka. "But it is nice to come inside where it's warm."

“I always have room for that,” she assured him earnestly.

It was true. Alluka’s sweets capacity was quite… large.

"Yes! And tasty!"

Because of course Alluka had been eating the building. Of course she had.

"Did you want cookie too? To go with your tea?"

"Well then," Sparkle made a big show of holding out the cup to her with a little flourish, "it's all yours, kiddo."

And it was one of the big ones, too!

“Thank you! Thank you!” she squealed, taking the hot chocolate delightedly. “Are you having the same? Did I do okay, taking it from the inside door? I thought, maybe, that if I took from the other door it would get cold so… so I didn’t.”

That had been right, right?

"You're welcome," Sparkle replied, smiling warmly. Aw, kid. You were his favourite kid. "And yeah, you did good. I'd rather have you taking from a door that doesn't do anything than something that keeps the cold out, or the ceiling from falling on us. Anyway, I bet that door is delicious."

He grinned, made sure he wasn't about to sit on anything important, and then hiked his butt up onto the counter.

"So, how're you doing today, Alluka?"

Alluka set down her hot chocolate and busied herself with getting Sparkle a plate of cookie-door. She’d managed to get it broken down in to pieces that were easy enough to pick up and eat by now, which made it easier. She set the plate down by him.

“I’m okay,” she said, all big, earnest eyes. She was usually okay, admittedly. “The island’s been doing fun stuff, and I like that.”

Sparkle gave her a little smile as he reached for one of the more manageable pieces of door.

"Fun stuff, huh? I've missed some of that, I think. Wasn't feeling so well after last weekend." You know. For reasons. "What was your favourite fun thing so far?"

“I didn’t like the funny drink that came out of the taps,” she said thoughtfully. “But everything else has been fun. Can I favourite them all?”

Sparkle almost choked on his hot chocolate. Oh, shit, he'd forgotten about the mulled crap from the taps. Which was kind of sad, because it had been a pain in the ass to cook around, and all.

"Sure," he said, wiping a dribble of rogue chocolate from his chin. "I think 'them all' is a pretty good answer. Getting excited for Christmas, then?"

Alluka giggled, and offered him a napkin. She didn't know why he'd choked, but still. No need to make a mess!

She shrugged a little. She'd been more excited last year.

"Are you excited for Christmas?"

Sparkle chuckled sheepishly as he accepted the offered napkin.

"I can take or leave it," he admitted. "I mean, it's fun, right? But the island's been giving plenty of stuff leading up to it, so..."

Actually, Sparkle kind of hated the holiday. He just didn't want to humbug all over Alluka's advent.

"I wish we could have all the fun stuff all year around," she said thoughtfully. "Then it'd be like we're coming up to a holiday all the time!"

"That... would be... amazing." Sparkle grinned. "Can you imagine? Like, the island leading up to every holiday? Chocolates in preparation for Valentine's, or little coins hiding everywhere before Saint Patrick's Day?"

Come on, Island. Get with it. Tiny bunnies for Lent or whatever.

Alluka would expire from sheer joy if tiny bunnies showed up. SHEER. JOY.

"And, and if we did every holiday, we might always have holidays going on! Because the world's awfully huge."

And the universe was even huger.

Ringo blinked, surprised. Then realized that she totally shouldn't have been, and laughed. "Um, sure. I mean, it'd be a shame to miss out, right?"

Her eyes slid to where Alluka was preparing said tea, and she offered a grateful smile.

Sooo big.

"... Oh god, we'd be celebrating, like, puppy day and macaroni and cheese day. I could get behind those days. At the same time."

Who didn't want to eat macaroni and cheese while being flopped all over by puppies, right?

Look, if the walls were cookie, it would take a stronger person than Alluka to not try eating them! Though she was mostly stealing pieces from the door that led to the backroom.

Because she didn't want to be cold either.

She set the tea down for Ringo--luckily, she'd only just started a pot not long ago, so she still had plenty of hot water--and waved her over. While getting her a plate of cookie-door.

"It's pretty tasty," she said happily.

A quick, sip of tea, and Ringo let out a happy little sigh. "I'm sure it is," she allowed. "But this tea is exactly what I needed." She shot the other girl another grin. "Thanks, Alluka."

Mmm... warmth.

Best. Day. Ever.

"I bet there's days like that out somewhere," she said hopefully. "So, so the island could do it if it wanted to."

"It so could," Sparkle agreed. "And heck, even if it doesn't, there's no reason we can't decide a day is puppy day or macaroni day. I mean, I can't conjure puppies out of thin air, but they're always looking for people to play with them at the shelter, you know?"

Alluka beamed.

"Is that enough to warm you up?" she asked, after a moment. "I could find you a sweater, if that would help too."

...

...

"There's a place were I could play with puppies?!"

Any time she wanted?!

"I think I'll warm up pretty fast." She tugged at the fabric of her coat. "This is actually pretty warm. Though I might get a few more warm things?" Back home she didn't have to wear a lot of layers, so her wardrobe didn't have a lot of warm inner garments in it.

"What about you?" she asked, cocking her head curiously. "Are you managing to stay warm with this weather?"

"I've got everything I need!" she said, nodding. "Sparkle helped me figure out everything I needed ages ago!"

She'd needed help in that department. Alluka could figure out a dress in two seconds flat and how to best coordinate with accessories.

Figuring out how to dress for the outdoors had been... a thing she'd had to learn.

OH PRECIOUS PRICELESS BABY GIRL.

"There's a place where you can play with puppies!"

Almost any time she wanted, so long as they were open!

"Oh my god, I'm so going to have to take you sometime. You didn't know? It's awesome. That's where I got Milady from, too."

"Yeah? Well, if it snows again, we'll have to put your cold-weather clothes to the test with a snowball fight or something!"

Somehow, Ringo suspected Alluka hadn't had one of those before.

"I didn't know!"

Alluka was so delighted by this knowledge. She wriggled with glee.

"I can't wait until we can go! I want to see them!" And play with them! And cuddle them! And kiss them! And--

"Oh! I should tell you!" Brace yourself, Sparkle. "Milady's not here! She's gone off on fun fishy adventures!"

This was what happened when Alluka was left to devise her own reasons for why things happened.

"Is that a real fight?" she asked, proving she hadn't done it, no. "Or--oh! I think I've read about that! That's a game, right?"

"Yeah, more a game. Or, maybe, a friendly competition?" She shrugged and grinned. "It's a ton of fun!"

Which, of course Ringo thought so.

"We could also build a snow sculpture or something, if you'd rather." But that was way more boring.

"I," Alluka said, giggling, "think that we should do everything."

Ringo beamed in approval. "I do like the way you think, Alluka!"

Sparkle's mouth fell open in shock. It was totally shock, and not at all him going, 'oh shit, I forgot to tell Alluka I was taking the fish.' Honest.

"Fishy adventures, huh?"

Well, that was better than 'someone stole the fish,' or being convinced that Milady had died or something.

"Really big, epic ones?"

"The most epic of adventures! She's going all over the universe!"

The thing was, Alluka had been thinking about this enough that she now was able to believe it.

It was a much better story, anyway, than something normal or sad.

"The whole entire universe?" Sparkle blinked, looking at Alluka with wide eyes. "Oh my goodness, I had no idea I bought such an adventurous fish!"

As opposed to a fish who was currently sitting in his bedroom staring at a fake plant for he hundredth consecutive hour.
