Parents Weekend Bowling Night, Fast Eddie's, Saturday

J.Lo had helped Tip set up for the evening, so along with the obligatory preponderance of glitter for any Student Council organized activity, there was also a non-zero amount of bubbles. Bubbles of every shape, size, and color drifted through the arcade, the shoe rental, the dining counter, everywhere but the bowling lanes, so as to not mess with the floor there if they popped. They weren't going to pop without extra effort, though. These were Boov bubbles, built to last.

"You know no one but you can tell that those say 'Welcome parents and guests', right?" Tip asked. Bill flew in indignant circles of her head, and J.Lo gave her the stink eye.

"If Tip had beento studying as werefor her promisings, she would knows this also."

"Anyway, let's get you some shoes. . . ."

For those who are just here for the company, and/or are afraid of the shoes.

The game where you roll a heavy ball at pins and try to knock them over. Tip's already had to explain that a few times this week, so she's made sure the staff has the gutter bumpers, duck pins, and those helper bowling ramps out and about for extra accessibility.

For anyone who'd rather spend the time pumping quarters into machines and killing digital space invaders. Or dancing. There's gotta be a DDR set up in here, right?

It's mostly traditional, cheap American fare, over here, hot dogs and french fries and nachos and things, but there's some shipped-in vegetarian options and for some reason a special on mynock wings.

Also a large bucket of freshly caught fish and some glitter patties, for the more . . . exotic . . . palettes.

I got up early today to make sure I had time to wet down and style my hair and have it dry completely before my hair appointment this afternoon.

Oh the joys of thick, curly hair.

J.Lo was wearing three pairs of bowling shoes, sized so the hole at the top fit around his leg stumps, leaving a good several inches of empty shoe flopping about when he walked. He was shuffling around in an extremely uncoordinated manner as a result, hefting an eight pound, sparkly pink ball over his head before barreling full, awkward speed at towards the lane. He tripped just before he would have fallen over the boundary line, let go of the ball, and watched it roll down the lane with rapt attention.

This was how he bowled. Tip had never yet managed to convince him to do it the traditional way.

He still almost always beat her when they played.

Kanan was a little afraid of the shoes, admittedly. Mostly because their reputation preceded them, and any pair of shoes that one had to be warned about beforehand probably warranted at least a little concern.

So he was squinting at them mightily after he'd gotten himself situated, a few minutes after strolling through the door.

"... Huh. Those aren't too bad."

Hideous, maybe. But not too bad.

"I think people are put off by how many people have worn them before," Tip said. "But, I mean, if you're wearing socks. . . ." She shrugged. "Hey Kanan. You made it."

"Hey, I said I would try," Kanan replied, grinning. "Wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Watch you bowl another nineteen."

Whatever the frak that meant.

Tip pressed her hand over her mouth to smother a giggle. "It's a very impressive score," she said. Impressively terrible. She usually bowled at least a little bit better than that, but that one game had just been so amazingly bad that it stuck out in her mind. "I don't think you can beat it."

He was too coordinated.

"I suppose we'll find out, won't we? How does this game work, anyhow?"

Going by that giggle there, Kanan suspected that it was going to be an amusing evening, at the very least.

It was the way Tip and J.Lo played.

"It's really pretty simple. You roll the ball to try and knock down as many of the pins as you can. You can watch me and J.Lo do it first to get the idea."

And see two very different bowling styles.

"Speaking of: hey J.Lo! Come over and meet Kanan!"

A short, squat, octopus-frog looking fellow wearing three pairs of bowling shoes came shuffling over at high speed.

"Yes hellos!" he greeted, smiling up at Kanan. "Tip has beento tellings me about your swordclass trainings! She is very good at getting into all the bad simulations, so I am thanking you."

Huh. So, Tip's friend was like those guys who had been eating the still living thing at that restuarant when Kanan had first met Tip. Interesting to know, but beyond that, Kanan mostly just slotted J.Lo neatly into the 'sentient' category in his mind and called it good. Being from a place with thousands of different intelligent species (and some that were intelligent enough to be categorized as 'stupid') made that easy enough.

"No need to thank me," he replied, smiling easily at the both of them, now. "It was something she wanted to learn, and I'm in a position to give her at least the basics. As someone else who is very good at getting into all the bad simulations, I figure those of us with a nose for trouble probably ought to stick together."

"Is that why humanspeople are so good at finding the troubles?" J.Lo mused, giving Tip a knowing look. "They haves the noses?"

Boov didn't have any noses to speak of, no.

Tip rolled her eyes with a smile. "Right, because you never get into trouble."

"Anyways," J.Lo said. "The bowlings."

Kanan had to chuckle a little at that.

"The bowlings," he agreed, looking toward the bowling lanes. "So... I'm getting the 'roll the ball and knock the... things over... part. There's got to be more to it than that."

... Right?

"There is beings a trick to it," J.Lo confirmed.

"J.Lo's trick is to trip," said Tip.

"It's a very good trick," J.Lo said with tremendous dignity.

"It's not as easy as it looks," Tip said. "And there's some weird scoring rules that I never really understood. But mostly you get one point per pin you knock down. There are ten pins per frame, and you get two tries to knock them down. Twenty frames in the game."

Which meant the score she bragged about averaged slightly less than one pin per frame, yes.

Kanan was starting to gather that, yes. Once the math added up in his head, he couldn't quite manage to bite back another little laugh.

"Well, the rules themselves seem straightforward enough," he decided, and glanced at the lanes again. "And it looks like the screens keep score for you, so that makes that part easy, too. Good. This should be simple to pick up, then."

"Totally simple," Tip confirmed. "And we've got all the little helper tools they have to help you get the hang of it, too."

"They are tobe cheating," J.Lo said.

"He's bitter because we didn't think to tell him about them when he first learned how to do it."

"Cheating!"

"Cheating, huh?" Kanan wasn't going to bother even trying to hide his amusement. "What kind of helper tools are we talking about, here?"

"So this is bowling." Breq watched J.Lo, her amusement not showing on her face.

"The gutter bumpers help keep the ball on track towards the pins, so you're more likely to get at least one," Tip explained. "And the duck pins lanes have lighter balls and pins, for littler people. And the ramp is good for people who can't swing a heavy ball for any reason. You're not allowed to cross the line right at the edge of the gutters, and you need to roll the ball, not throw it, but how you roll it from that far back doesn't matter."

"And you needs tobe wearings the shoes!" J.Lo added. "And keeps the bowlingsfloor neat and nicey."

"It is the way J.Lo does it," Tip agreed with a smile. "Humans usually use a different style, but that's the basic gist."

"Well," Kanan said, making note of those tools and then deciding pretty much immediately that he wasn't likely to need any of them, "I guess that means I need to get some shoes."

Some of those horrible, horrible shoes.

"So, will you show me the human style?" Breq asked. "I think it might suit me better."

"It's easier on the face, if nothing else," Tip said. "First you want to pick out a ball that's not too heavy for you, and one you'll recognize when it comes out the ball return. Mine is the sparkly green one." She picked it up and turned it around to show Breq the finger holes. "You hold it using these, with your thumb and two fingers, and then you just roll it like this."

She walked up to the line, held the ball up, eyeing the pins to take aim, and then bent down and swung the ball, sending it rolling down the middle of the lane. About halfway down it started to veer towards the gutter, and Tip hissed through her teeth and gestured with her head as though she could make it roll back to the middle by will alone.

She knocked down two pins, and threw her hands in the air in victory.

"I'm not that good at it," she confessed. "But it's still fun to try."
