Pick Your Poison, Wednesday

Today, Sparkle was taking an inventory of the hand lotions. Not the quality hand lotions that Ino prepared for the shop herself using whatever she grew in those back rooms of hers.

Nope, he was over in the Corner of Shame™ taking stock of, like, the Nivea and Jergens and other mass-produced stuff for whatever orders might need to be placed for... how had it been put to him? The whiners? He grinned faintly at that, and then put another tick in the Lubriderm column. Yeah, he couldn't wait until he was done counting over here, so that he could go and check out the vanilla-and-rose combination in the quality stock that he'd noticed earlier in the day.

Breq hadn't paid much attention to this shop before, as she was neither in need of fancy lotions or poisons, although she wasn't sure if the latter was actually being sold there. So far she hadn't had the impression that poisons were popular.

She recognized Sparkle though, and since she hadn't showed up for class last week, she decided to stop by and let him know why, so she opened the door.

Sparkle glanced up from his inventory, and turned a little smile Breq's way.

"Hey there," he greeted. "Missed you in class last week. Is everything okay?"

To the point, that Sparkle.

"I turned into an animal. Something called an armadillo." She had looked it up. "I understand it happens here, but I wanted to let you know."

She added a smile.

Sparkle blinked, and then broke into a silly little grin.

"Okay, that's kind of cute," he decided. "Thanks for letting me know, Breq. You didn't miss too much anyway, I can give you my notes about homeless shelters if you're worried."

"It's cute?" Breq asked, expressionless. "I understand they don't usually listen to music. I would be happy to read the notes."

[myownface]

"I like armadillos." Sparkle shrugged a little. "They're little and armoured and they roll into a ball when they're scared."

He kind of related to them.

"And I'll forward my notes along to you once I've got them with me again. If you have any questions about any of it, feel free to ask."

Breq was unlikely to roll into a ball, but she had been armoured and well-protected most of her life. Or so she had thought.

"It could have been worse, I suppose."

"It can always be worse," Sparkle agreed. "I was a chihuahua once. I thought I was neurotic when I wasn't a dog."

"It's one of those tiny dogs people put in bags?" Somehow they had showed up somewhere when Breq had been researching Earth culture. "At least you don't remind me of one."

It was hard to tell whether that last sentence was meant as a joke.
