The Park, Friday Afternoon

It was a gorgeous day. Warm, dry... there were some clouds in the sky, but it wasn't like Kanan minded a few clouds. He'd brought Stance to the park today, and for the first time in a long while, he'd just sort of given into the urge to play a game of fetch with his dog, instead of getting him to entertain himself during lightsaber training or meditation.

Stance, unsurprisingly, was loving it. Except he kept bringing back the wrong stick. Kanan had started by throwing something pretty small and spindly, and Stance had come trotting back with something a little more solid than the twig he'd been sent to get. Kanan threw the new stick, and Stance came trotting back with something larger still.

"If I throw it this time, are you going to go searching the island for a fallen log, buddy?"

Stance stood there with his tongue lolling out and his tail wagging behind him, as if saying, 'There's only one way to find out, right?'

Kanan laughed and threw the stick again. Training for the fight ahead was important, of course, but sometimes a guy had to just live in the moment, too.

Raven had her own business in town, now, so she was actually spending a lot more time on the urban side of the island these days. The park made a nice refuge when the buildings started to feel a little like they were closing in on her.

"Well hey, it's the glowing sword guy." She remembered his name, the sword thing just stuck out a lot more. "Nice to see you vertical again."

Kanan huffed out a wry laugh at that, throwing the stick for Stance to run and get again, and then turning to face her.

"It's good to be vertical again," he said with a nod. "The less time I spend in a medcenter bed, the happier I am."

"It's generally a good policy." Not that Raven had ever spent much time in one, herself. The few times she'd probably have needed one, it hadn't really been an option. "How's it going? Dog still feuding with the ducks?"

"He's hell-bent on fitting an entire forest into his mouth the next time I throw that stick, I'm sure," Kanan watched Stance sniffing around the shrubbery, quite some distance away from both the pond and the stick Kanan had thrown. Crazy dog. "I don't really have any complaints otherwise. The weather's nice today, and I'm wasting perfectly good training weather playing fetch, instead."

Not that bad weather had ever really stopped him from training before.

"Does he know that's what you're doing?" Raven wondered. "Maybe he thinks you're asking him to find better and better sticks by throwing out the old ones." Hey, you never knew with dogs! "You know, practicing stuff deliberately is something I've only ever seen sentients do. If you were an animal in the wild, whether or not to just relax on a nice day wouldn't even be a question."

"True enough," Kanan chuckled. "I'm pretty sure he understands fetch by now, but..."

He waved a vague hand toward the spotted butt sticking out of a bush.

"Sometimes, I wonder." He glanced back at Raven. "Normally I've got a student here on Fridays, but I'm pretty sure she's on vacation. So long as she doesn't know I'm taking a Friday off, I'm not going to sweat having a bit of fun today. And how about you? How have you been lately?"

Raven nodded. "It's a good week for a vacation. This kind of weather always makes me want to be lazy." She sat down on the bench, stretching out so she could feel the sun on her scales. She wasn't actually cold blooded or anything, as far as she knew, but she did enjoy a good sunny day! "I've been alright. I'm a business owner now, so that's new and exciting."

And a little bit terrifying.

"Hey, a business owner. That's more ambitious than anything I've done with my life," said the guy who joined a rebellion over a pretty face. "Congratulations! What business are you getting into?"

"I guess you could call it gaming? Or leisure, maybe. I bought Quark's when he left town. I don't really think this place needs another bar, but those holosuites are way too cool to let go, you know?"

"Oh, the danger shop things with the stories programmed in, right?" Kanan snapped his fingers in recognition. "Yeah, I can see how you'd want to hold on to those. Endless possibilities that don't hinge on having access to the school. Can't complain about those."

... And that holo technology was a lot sharper and more convincing than the stuff they had back in his own galaxy. Less blue and glitchy.

The joys of coming from a utopian sci-fi instead of a space western!

"Exactly. I'm honestly kind of tempted to try to move into one of them."

At least until she saw her electric bill, anyway.

Yeah, that would put a bit of a dampener on it, wouldn't it?

"I'd be tempted too," Kanan admitted. "Though maybe they've got a slightly more practical use. Do you figure those rooms can be used for combat training?"

"Absolutely," Raven said firmly. "There's actually a whole bunch of fighting programs already installed in them. They're pretty easy to modify, too, the computer is really responsive and does a lot of the work for you. Heck, that's half of what I use them for."

Combat training was basically the same as venting your murderous tendencies on imaginary people, right?

Sure! If you were Sith.

Kanan scratched at his beard, mulling that over.

"And when are you having your grand opening?"

Because he was going to abuse the hell out of that, now that he was fairly certain just stepping through the door of that place wasn't going to end in him being swindled out of all of his credits.

"Goooood question," Raven said. "Setting the place up won't be too hard, but I still need to figure out my price system and stuff like that. I'll keep you updated?"

"You do that," Kanan replied, grinning. "I'll happily be your first customer. I have a rough touch with training remotes, having something I wouldn't just blow up within an hour or two would do me a world of good."

"Or at least something that's programmed to blow up," Raven said. What? Sometimes explosions were fun, too!

"Or that," Kanan agreed. "Just so long as I don't have to build a new one all over again once that happens."

Hey, he could appreciate a good explosion from time to time, too.

"Nope! You can just ask the computer to restart the program."

"That is way more practical than training remotes," Kanan noted, smirking. "Yeah, you'll definitely have to let me know when you're in business. Let's see if that room is enough to offer me a challenge."

Said the guy who had been hospitalized the other week.

"Oh, I think it has a trick or two up its sleeve," Raven said.

She was picturing klingons. Lots and lots of klingons.

Kanan was going to love the Klingons. Maybe he could get his hands on a bat'leth...

"I'm sure it does," he replied. "I'm looking forward to seeing what those tricks are."

"You know, I don't have to be officially open yet to give you a sneak preview," Raven said. She'd offered as much to a random stranger over the phone earlier in the week, after all. "You know, when your dog's done finding the largest stick in the entire park."

Kanan tilted his head, looking thoughtful. And then he nodded.

"You know, I think I'm going to have to take you up on that," he said. "I don't think I've got anybody coming for sparring or lessons today anyway."

And lo, here came Stance, proudly lugging something along the ground that was more a tree branch than a stick.

Raven had to chuckle at that branch. Stance was clearly an ambitious pupper! "Great! Maybe if the squirrels report on it, I can get some free press out of the deal, too."

Kanan gave a little snort at that.

"What, for a Saturday broadcast with the sleemo the squirrels drag in to the station to read the notes? Fat chance of that happening. But I'll talk you up on Monday if I'm impressed, don't worry."

He had no faith in Seivarden ever having anything even remotely decent to say about anything that Kanan did. None.

Raven laughed. "I don't think I've had that strong an opinion on the radio broadcasters in years. Guess I shouldn't plan the grand opening for a Friday night, huh?"

"I try not to have strong opinions about anybody, but she rubs me entirely the wrong way."

Because she was awful.

Kanan shrugged.

"Maybe you'll have better luck if I'm not at that grand opening, but she seems to have it out for anything I take an interest in. Next time she bad-mouths one of my students I'm going to break her nose."

Worst Jedi.

"Maybe I'll hold it on a Saturday and you breaking her nose can be part of the festivities." Raven didn't even know who this person was, she just didn't have any particular objections to violence.

"Don't tempt me," Kanan laughed, shaking his head. "That's a bad look for me."

But Force help him it would be satisfying.

Apparently, for Seivarden, Kanan would turn to the Dark Side.

Well. Everyone was allowed their weak spot.

"Alright, I promise to only set you up to hit holographic people."

"And see," Kanan laughed, "this is why you're going to get so much business from me."

She was going to get him hooked.
