Community Center Class: Modern Earth Entertainment

"Hi." Peter waved a little from where he stood near the front of the room by the large-screen TV. The rest of the room was set up with comfy chairs and a few beanbags. "This is Modern Earth Entertainment, which is less a class than a chance for some of us to catch up on movies and things we might have missed, and maybe get some of the cultural references people are using."

He held up a piece of paper and set it down on a nearby table. "If you have any suggestions for things you've heard about and want to see, or things you have seen and think we all should, please let me know.

"Today, we'll start with one I have seen, though it's been...a while." You forgot a few things after a millennium. "I picked it because it's got a little romance, a little drama, a little politics…" He shrugged. "It's also got a lot of music that's gotten pretty well known over the years."

He waved at the table. "I've made some popcorn, which is traditional while you're watching movies, and there's some carbonated soda and beers too. Enjoy."

He settled back in one of the chairs and picked up the remote, starting up The Sound of Music.

See Kanan. See Kanan grab himself some popcorn and a can of Coke. See Kanan give the beer a kind of longing look for a moment before really committing himself to that Coke, cracking it open and taking a swig.

See? Satisfying, right there.

"It's been too kriffing long since we've done one of these."

It was weird not doing it in Peter's living room, but at least this was neutral territory while potentially dealing with The Enemy.

Amaya Blackstone

Seivarden Vendaai

Seivarden picked up a whole bowl of popcorn and a bottle of soda. She took a seat as far away from Kanan as possible, not wanting to repeat Monday's class, and instead greeted Amaya with a smile and a nod.

She was going to do her best to enjoy the movie.

It wasn't bad, Seivarden had to admit. The story made some sense, the setting was beautiful and the songs would have been easy to sing along, had she wanted to do that.

"Yeah," Peter agreed. He was drinking a Coke himself, since it made no difference to him whether he had alcohol or not. "Hopefully less trauma this time?"

Luckily Peter had brought plenty, but he was still sighing a little bit. It was probably good that Seivarden and Kanan sat separately, but he'd been hoping to avoid drama here.

"Hopefully less trauma," Kanan agreed. He was also leaving out the 'less temptation to murder' bit. There was no point stirring up drama here. "Wouldn't mind doing another small one sometime, though. Maybe in my apartment. You, me, Hera, the dog. Possibly Chopper. Chopper can be a pain in the ass, but at least Hera can get him to behave himself."

You know. Unlike some people. Kanan really had wished Seivarden wouldn't be here. Half the reason he'd come was because he missed hanging out with his friend, after all.

Seivarden wasn't going to cause any drama. She was going to sit over here, eat popcorn, pointedly not look in Kanan's direction, and talk to others, possibly.

No drama. If Kanan said something that was his problem.

Yeah, those beanbags weren't coming anywhere near Amaya's bottom; she was eyeing them with a particular brand of contempt that anyone could be comfortable in something that smushy before she turned her focus on grabbing some popcorn, grabbing a beer, and giving nods around the room to the other movie-watching culture-seekers.

Oh, no. It turned out that Amaya was apparently one of...those movie watchers.

A confused-sounding "What?" seemed to escape her more often than not, occasionally a snort of a laugh at the ridiculousness of what she was watching, at least one "Why are they singing now?" and one "Oh, zards, more singing?". She'd at least managed to keep her responses to any mushy stuff constrained to her face, save for one "Blech" that managed to escape, and, yup, a disgruntled sound any time a song started up.

Sorry, everyone else.

It wasn't that bad toward the end, when they were escaping from the bad guys. That should have been the whole movie, just scrap the singing, and the mushy stuff, and the precocious kids, and it wouldn't be half bad. Maybe instead of ending with the main character in a field in the mountains somewhere, she picked up a nice weapon and went after the bad guys instead...yeah, that'd be much better.

Oh, hey! Just the blacksmith Kanan had been hoping to see.

"Amaya," he said, giving her a polite nod. "I've heard through the squirrel information network that you're looking to start doing your smithing here on the island at some point?"

And Amaya returned the nod and smiled back, lifting her beverage almost in salute.

"Well," she offered, "this should be interesting, at least."

She was honestly still trying to wrap her brain around just sitting in the dark not really doing anything for an hour and a half and trying to justify it. There were so many things that could be done in the time it took to watch a movie!

"Kanan," Amaya returned the nod with an appropriate amount of gravitas before she allowed a grin to sneak onto her face. "You've heard right; nice how those squirrels actually get their information right more often than not. I plan on opening this autumn, after the summer, since my workshop's centered around the students helping me build the new shop."

Ah, exploiting children for cheap labor! She could have built the thing herself, of course, but a little help wasn't ever a bad thing, and she suspected she'd have to go back and redo half of what they did, anyway.

"Why?" she asked, with a spark of eager brightness in her eyes. "You got a job in mind?"

It had been way too long. As soon as that shop was ready (possibly even before), she was going to make all the things.

Kanan laughed a little. Hey, if she had found a way to get the school to not only approve but encourage using her class for personal gain, he wasn't going to be the one to complain about it.

"As a matter of fact, I do," he replied. "See, I've got a student who I've been teaching swordplay to on Friday afternoons. Mostly we've been using training swords. These flimsy things made out of bamboo."

He shrugged. They had worked for what they were used for, but it wouldn't have been his first choice if he'd had more options.

"Over break, she seems to have picked up something a bit more sturdy, which puts me at a bit of a disadvantage."

It was pretty encouraging, that she already had a list of pre-orders pretty much building up in the ether. Not a lot, mind, and most of them were actually technically just things she wanted to make because she'd had a brief discussion about something with someone, but...

Oh, yes. Those fingers inside her gloves were itching!

Amaya smirked when she felt she'd confirmed what Kanan was angling for when he reached sturdy. "Ah," she said, holding up a hand, "say no more! I know a true sign of a good teacher is when the student surpasses them in skill, but I don't think that holds any water to the student surpassing them in equipment. Now, I probably won't have the proper stuff for a forge in by probably week three or four, but that'll get me enough to start working. If you like, though, I have a plenty of spare weapons in my house," like an actual, literal room filled with them...a room and a half, actually, since Quark had officially moved out, "if you wanted to swing by and have a look, get you something to borrow to hold you over until we can get you something all shiny and sparkly and new."

"Actually, that would be great," Kanan replied, grinning. "I wouldn't go so far as to say she's surpassed me in skill just yet, but getting my hands on an actual sword and putting her through her paces with something heavier than a stick in her hand would be a good step forward. And if you need any help getting your forge in and set up, or bringing in building supplies for your class, give me a call. I've been itching for some good heavy work to do for a while now."
