Holosuite One had apparently decided to get itself stuck on some mid-century nightclub program. Raven spent about ten minutes trying to fix it before just giving up and deciding to roll with it.

She looked cute in a bowtie.

The costume rental was full of color-blocked minidresses and fedoras, and Raven had some miscellaneous gaming guides up front for those who wanted to gamble but weren't familiar with mid-20th century Earth games. The sounds of lounge jazz coming from the open holosuite door had Raven tapping the feet she had propped against the check-in counter.

Seriously, why were all of Quark's leftover programs obsessed with the 60s? At least it wasn't Nazis, this time. . . .

“A high-class theme for a high-class establishment,” Raven agreed. “I’m thinking of reprogramming some of the cigarette girls into cigarette boys.”

The sixties were not well known for sexual equality.

"Pretty ones, right?" Kathy checked. Because a tiiiiny bit of objectification was okay when it was a hologram, right? Especially since it was reversing the existing power structures?

"YES," Kathy said, clapping her hands. "Absolutely yes! Ooooh, this makes me wanna come back and do a host club some time."

She looked around. "Err...how do we?"

“I don’t know what host club is,” Raven said, laughing. “But I’m in favor of it. We can pick boys in the holosuite. That way we get a full 360 view of their ... assets.”

Kathy snickered, like the mature adult she was. "I could explain host clubs?" she said. "But it's way more fun to watch the anime. Now let me pick out something suitable before we go in. I can't pick out pretty boys in anything less than my best, can I?"

She picked out a dress she liked from the costume rental and quickly shimmied into it. Some makeup, off-the-wall accessories and a hairstyle later and she was looking a lot older and more sophisticated.

"What do you think?" she asked, posing. "Do I fit the bill?"

Was "the bill" reminding her best friend that she used to have a super big crush on you? Because if so, yes. Definitely.

"You look amazing," Raven assured her, taking just a teensy bit longer than usual to take in the outfit's whole effect. "You going to croon for us today?"

Kathy would insist it was the red lipstick and the 40s curl. The just said 'seductive' in a way little else did.

"Could I?" she asked, beaming. "I mean, if you wouldn't mind?"

"I dunno," Kathy said, shrugging. "Maybe this was supposed to be an all-gambling all the time sim."

Except the part where they, you know, decided on pretty cigarette boys together. As best friends so often did.

"You're not really understanding the purpose of these sims," Raven said. "They are literally what you want them to be."

"Okay, so you know in video games there's the big plot arc, but you can also just fuck off and go farming for hours if you want?"

"Picking flowers and dyeing cloth is an important part of any video game experience," Kathy said with a nod.

"Well there you go. Think of the holonovels as like really, really expansive open-world video games. Even if it kind of wants you to do the plot, you can do literally anything else you want."

"Well, then, so long as you don't mind me crooning away bad covers of, like, Moon River or something, I'm all in," Kathy decided. "You're gonna play, too, right?"

Instead of, you know, working. Pfft, whatever. Bestie time trumped that, right?

"Not a problem," Kathy said, giving Raven a little salute. "You can even leave the door open if it'll still work that way, just so you can hear if anybody comes in."

Kathy held out a red-gloved hand. "Shall we go pass judgment on some pretty cigarette boys and then teach these folks why they need to hold onto their wallets while we're in town?"
