Covent Garden Flowers; Tuesday [10/16].
It had been a few weeks since Astrid had been into work, sure, so she wasn't entirely surprised to come into the shop and find a copious amount of pumpkins everywhere. Everywhere. Most of them were just normal pumpkins, it seemed, but a few of them, especially around the counter, seemed to have already been carved into jack-o-lanterns, very classic and basic ones, all geometrical shapes, triangles for eyes, little juts of squares for teeth in widely grinning mouths. It got a faint smile out of her, something so simple and whimsical, really, and it gave her a good idea for what to do with her downtime today, spreading out some paper on the counter, taking out her mother's knife, and picking out a few choice pumpkins to carve.
Except...as soon as she had pressed the tip of the knife into the top of the first pumpkin, she heard a faint whisper of a gasp. She blinked, looked up, and saw that the jack-o-lanterns had somehow managed to turn toward her, and their previously jolly faces had shifted into something terrified and aghast. Astrid paused for a moment, told herself she was just imagining it, and cautiously sunk the blade into the top of the pumpkin
The jack-o-lanterns screamed in horror.
Astrid jerked out her knife, set it aside, and lifted her hands in surrender. A part of her wanted to continue just in defiance for how dramatic the jack-o-lanterns were being, but she couldn't stomach the idea of actually carving into and gutting one of their brethren right before their eyes.
"Okay, okay," she said. "No carving, alright? Maybe...how about we just paint some of these pumpkins, then, would that be okay?"
The jack-o-lanterns seemed much more approving of this idea, and so Astrid dug some paints out of her bag and got to work, secretly a little thankful because these were turning out way more beautiful and interesting than any jack-o-lantern would have been.
