Community Center Class: Modern Earth Entertainment

Peter was frowning at the DVD player today, and looked up when people arrived. He sighed. "Hi, everybody. First of all, sorry about last week - I didn't realize we'd started yet, what with it being the new year. Anyway, I thought I'd start us out with a movie about the guy the recent holiday was all about. Or at least the religious ideas of who he is. There are a few, and some of them are pretty good. Unfortunately, the only one this thing wants to play is...not that."

He gave it an exasperated look. "Hopefully this'll be fun, at least. Maybe you'll learn a few things through satire, anyway. Please ask questions if you need to."

He let the movie start.

Fjord was absolutely here for the popcorn, anyway. The drinks he was giving a speculative side-eye before he shrugged and grabbed a bottle of water. He wasn't feeling the soft drinks tonight, nah.

...

Fjord had questions.

But that song at the end was oddly catchy.

"Oh, weekly indulgence of popcorn and soda," said Amaya fondly to the snacks as she picked them out, "I have missed you."

It was, after all, the little things in life.

Well, the setting and the details were a little bit different, but there were moments in this one that reminded Amaya a little bit of Daventry and its own ridiculousness at times. So she couldn't help thoroughly enjoying this one, especially once she fully realized that it wasn't supposed to be taken seriously.

At least she sure hoped it wasn't! And if so....oops?

Beau was definitely going to help herself to soda -- and spike it with a small bottle from her pocket -- but she had a duffel bag full of popcorn courtesy of work today, so she was set there.

New Testament History was a required course in freshman year at my (private) high school. The year I took it, the teacher who'd gotten saddled with it decided to show this as part of the course. It wasn't even a filler movie day or anything; it was on the syllabus.

Beau, like Fjord, only ended up being even more perplexed by this world than she had been, although she did spend a decent amount of time laughing loudly and obnoxiously at some of the raunchier jokes.

She was gonna be so annoyed if she ended up singing that song for the rest of the week though.

Fenris watched the movie and was entirely baffled but unlike the polite members of the group, he blurted a loud, "What the shit?" afterward

...yeah, that was a fair response, and Amaya couldn't help snorting when she heard it.

"Still loads better than that one where they fly off in a car at the end."

Peter, Amaya adored you, she thought you were just great, but she was never going to really going to be able to forgive you for Grease.

"Agreed," Fenris said, "The car one was a terrible movie. I was told there are better musicals."

A beat.

"I'm not sure I trust that. It was during the snowmen..thing.. and it was an ice golem saying it."

Bobby. Whose name he hadn't gotten.

"Hmmm," Amaya's head tilted thoughtfully. "Didn't think I'd ever peg ice golems as musical fans, but I can't say I really know any of them. I would say, 'I'll believe it when I see it,' but that'd mean seeing more musical, and I'd say that's a hard pass."

"This one seemed to be," Fenris noted, "It was quite outraged when I said I didn't like them. I'm a little worried that sometime this winter, the golem will show back up and want me to watch more of them. Stranger things have happened in the last two weeks."

Fenris noted the flatness. He had no idea where that came from or what it meant but it was a different note than the laugh at the beginning.

"We have demons in my world too, but we'd never try to leave it up to just one man to stop them. That would be a little ridiculous," he offered.

"Stranger things have happened all throughout the last month," Amaya allowed, eyes going a little wide in recalling the whole December whirlwind. "Stuff that almost makes you feel you need to carry around a flamethrower all season."

Or at least a weed whacker.

"But on the bright side," she offered, "if it does track you down and hold you to it, they're never very long, and you might get lucky and there'll be some fighting or explosions in it, too."

"I suppose that's.. good?" Fenris said, "It's better than if he hadn't been invulnerable. It's different where I'm from. Having a connection to the Fade certainly helps but a sharp enough sword will sever them from reality whether or not it's magic."

"Yeah. I was not amused by the stalker lights nor the stalker vines. I didn't know what those were trying to do, we just hacked them into salad and left," Fenris said.

"Fighting and explosions would be good," he agreed, "Cars too, maybe, as long as there's no.." A hand flailed in the air, "..whatever that horribleness was supposed to be."

"We have different types as well. Different strengths, different weaknesses. For the most part, they all die the same." Fenris gestured to the lyrium scars, "I'm a channel to the Fade. I have no trouble sending them back to whatever realm they came from. It's good your Jesus was able to seal the world off."

He huffed a small laugh. "Mages in your world must be very different than the ones in mine. Demons get summoned all the time by mages who believe they will be the one who is immune to corruption and that they have the strength to keep a demon from breaking free. They are all wrong."
