Well, the place wasn't flooded persist, not after the sharknado had led to a number of reinforcements for the building.

But Tony could see the waterline clearly along the windows and held serious reservations about how anyone coming or going would affect that. So, building something to fix that problem was the plan.

Which was infinitely better than thinking about this past weekend, so...

Steve had woken up in a room in the hotel, so he decided to stop by...well, Brooklyn...for the good apology bagels and coffee. Details on the weekend were a lot fuzzy, but apology bagels would help, right?

Right?

"Tony?" he called out as he came in. "You here?"

Tony remembered Peggy and Jan and children and it was just a whole Thing.

Yep.

But not whatever ended things, of course. Not that.

"Working on something for the water," he called back.

"Like what?" Steve said. The water was just the cherry on the top of what was shaping up to be a bitch of a day.

He followed Tony's voice and arrived, coffee first, just in case Tony remembered more than he did and was angry.

Angry? No. Sad and fully blaming himself for whatever happened? Aw yeah.

"Basically a better sump pump?"

They were a matched pair of idiots, after all!

"That'll stop the water from rising, right?" Steve asked.

Not that water rising around him played into Steve's recurring nightmares at all. Noooope.

"In here at least?" The island was probably pushing it. "Hi."

Steve gave him a nervous little smile. "Hi. I brought coffee and bagels."

"Thanks," Tony said with an answering smile that was well practiced. Fake it till you make it sort of thing.

Steve handed him the coffee, then chewed his lower lip again, not sure what to say.

It was a ball of awkward, wasn't it?

"Where did you end up waking up?" he asked, looking at the brand on the coffee.

"The hotel," Steve said. "The Perk's pretty soggy and I figured you'd prefer good coffee."

And he had been stalling.

Tony nodded, lettinh that sink in as he drank his coffee. "Are you... you alright?"

"Not really," Steve admitted softly, staring at Tony's project like he had the first damn clue what he was making.

Science always made things easier. It was true.

"I can move my stuff if you want," Tony offered.

Wow. That sure helped.

Steve's heart plummeted to somewhere around his knees. "Are you dumping me?"

"I'm giving you space," Tony said, trying to make it sound good. "This weekend was very trying."

"I don't want space," Steve said in a very tiny voice.

"You don't?" Tony shouldn't be so surprised by that.

"Unless you need space and are just trying to be nice about it?"

Steve only had memories of horrible fighting and being married to someone else. And being really old. Maybe Tony remembered more detail and that's why he was getting stealth-dumped.

It wasn't a stealth dumping! Maybe? He had no clue.

"I don't know," he admitted.

This was such a train wreck and Steve had no idea how to stop it.

"I'm sorry," he said plaintively. "For...whatever I did that hurt you."

"I don't even know what it was," Tony babbled. "Will be? Might be?"

Time travel was the worst.

Steve made a small, wounded noise and stepped closer. "Might be," he insisted.

Tony couldn't even fathom how it could be Steve's fault here. He'd run through plenty of mental scenarios where Steve wised up and found someone better, though.

"It's like the kids, right?" Always changing.

It took Steve a second. "The ones that show up for a weekend," he said. "A future, but not always our future."
