Covent Garden Flowers, Thursday

There was a weird sense of anticipation happening in the flower shop today. At first, Octavia thought it was just her: after all, the school's break week was only days away, which meant that her trip with Duke was only days away too. So maybe it was just her who was feeling some anticipatory jitters?

But, no. It was definitely coming from outside her, from the rustling of leaves and the way some of the flowers stood extra alert on their stems. "Chit yu fig na kom au?" Octavia asked them, quietly.

They did not answer. This time, anyway.

Their Thursday lunches were basically a tradition now, so here Duke was, with two boxes of anchovy pasta (it came out pretty good, even if he was still grumpy he couldn't catch anything larger today). "Ha yun, gona. How are the flowers treating you today?"

"Ha yun, jaka," Octavia replied, looking up from where she'd been checking up on some aloe plants. She smiled, and while most of it was just because it was him, a part was because it was always nice to hear Trig spoken back to her.

She'd perhaps talked to the plants a little more today than she generally tended to.

She also shrugged. "I don't know, it's almost like they're waiting for something." A beat. "And no, not like they're waiting to take over the island or something."

"That's good. I'd hate to have to hurt them." On the plus side, sap probably wouldn't set off his trouble! "So, I thought you'd like to know that I accomplished a scheme this morning."

He set the food down on the counter, then pulled out his flask and poured a little bit of rum into one of Seivarden's tea cups. "For the squirrels."

Schemes tended to work better when they didn't get gossiped about on the radio, after all.

Octavia couldn't help raising an eyebrow at the rum. Usually their talk of schemes didn't merit caring about the squirrels.

"Must've been a good one," she drawled, leaving the succulents behind to return to the counter, though she stayed on the same side with him. "Tell me."

"It's . . . one that could still fall apart," Duke said. "I signed Larceny up for the school trip next week."

Octavia's head tilted, just a little. "The one where you have to get a teacher to take you if you're not one," she said. "What'd you do?"

"Listed her as another teacher's guest. Anakin wasn't bringing anyone, anyway."

Octavia's brow furrowed just a little. "What, Skywalker?" she asked. "He's gonna be okay with her, right? I don't know much about him apart from how I... was plotting to marry and murder him that one weekend you bought suits."

Just prior to them meeting, which felt almost like ancient history at this point.

"Oh god, Duke Duke." Duke sighed and shook his head. "But yeah, I think he'll be cool. He's in Nina's class with me, and seems like he can roll with things pretty well. Plus . . . he did alright in the volcano."

You know, other than the part where he Force-pushed Duke into a wall because he freaked out about the lava pit.

"Okay," Octavia said, nodding. She trusted his judgment on this, and so her expression brightened back up. "Then," she continued, lips curving into a tiny smirk, "good scheme. If it works, Larceny should be in for a good time."

"She'll have free food and new words to learn and even warm water to swim in." He frowned. "Assuming she's not, like, actually allergic to warm water."

He was pretty sure that wasn't a thing. But -- well. Around here you could never be totally certain.

"... Why would she be allergic to warm water?"

Octavia sincerely hoped that wasn't a thing. Warm water was fantastic.

"No idea," Duke said. "But she was very firm that she could not go to the onsen."

"Maybe she just doesn't like it," Octavia suggested, though she already suspected that wasn't it. "It can be kind of a weird place when you're not used to it."

She said it from experience.

"Maybe. She used the term 'allergic' herself, though." He shook his head. "It's kind of a drop in the bucket compared to how weird she is with everything else, but, I don't know. It stood out."

Because she talked about going swimming in the ocean in February. And that was just nuts.

"Well, we're not going to force her to go." Obviously. "And she'll swim on the trip if she wants to, and won't if she doesn't."

"Right. Either way, she'll get plenty of noodles and cake along the way."

Octavia nodded again. Then she glanced down, reaching for his hand.

"I hope she likes it."

Duke took her hand happily and gave it a little squeeze. "Me too. In the meantime . . . I'm kind of really looking forward to not having her on the boat for a little bit."

Octavia looked at their hands for a second before dragging her gaze back up, looking amused.

"'Cause of her, 'cause of me, or a third option?" she teased in a light rasp, slightly more quiet than before.

"Mmm, all of the above. It's nice to change things up sometimes."

He was used to way more change than he got around here, these days.

Octavia snorted, softly. "Good answer," she decided, while she gave his hand a squeeze. "It's a pretty big change-up, we're not going to be in Fandom for a while."

"We aren't," Duke agreed. "Have you done an overnight off the island since you got here? The boat doesn't count."

Octavia nodded. "Magnus took me on the school trip with him, last spring."

It had been a thoroughly weird experience which her general hang-ups had not allowed her to take even remotely enough advantage of.

"Oh hey! Where'd you go on that one?"
