Mystery Sign Theater 3000, Saturday

Bucky hadn't been in town last week: he'd headed out at the first sign of trouble, and then stayed away until the radio feed (and his other methods of surveillance no one needed to know about) told him the coast was clear again.

He knew there was a big shindig happening up at the school today. Figured it'd be a quiet day. Just like he liked it. Even Ingrid was out today, leaving Bucky to man the concessions counter by himself.

A young woman, sexually exploited all her life, decides to turn the tables and exploit the hapless men at a big city bank - by gleefully sleeping her way to the top.

Jesse had been at the picnic for most of the morning, but by afternoon she was feeling a little awkward and crowded. And... somehow that thought had her drifting to the movie theater again.

"Hey," she greeted as she walked up to the concession stand. "Doing the heavy lifting yourself today, huh?"

Yeah, the movie theater definitely wasn't crowded. But awkward?

Well, Bucky was doing his damnedest to keep all of that hidden. So this small smile he was sending Jesse's way right now seemed pretty natural. "Yeah, guess I can't just hide out in the office all the time."

He was the manager. He could if he really wanted to.

"I don't know, Ingrid looks like she could handle a crowd of... one," Jesse teased gently. "What's the movie of the week?"

"This week," Bucky replied, "we have Miss Barbara Stanwyck in The Kind of A Girl That Men Regret." He gave a little shrug. "Should be another good one."

He'd definitely snuck in to see it as a kid.

"That's another one of those really old ones, right?" Jesse said, mouth curving.

You really have a theme here.

"This one's..." Bucky started, then trailed off like he really had to think about it. "Thirty three, I think?" He nodded back towards the office. "Read it somewhere on the paperwork. Besides, 'round here? Old's really just a matter of perspective."

"I guess you're right," Jesse said wryly, "Still, pre-World War Two is a while for people over the causeway."

Bucky's tiny smirk was a little crooked. "But we're not over the causeway, are we?"

His accent went full Brooklyn for a second there.

"No," Jesse allowed, "And I'm technically from 2019."

Bucky nodded. "See? So best to treat it like we're just showin' good movies here."

Just, ones that happened to be from a pretty particular time period, so far.

"They don't make any good movies after the 1950s?" Jesse teased. She smiled a little. "But I'll take a popcorn, please."

Bucky nodded as he went to get her some fresh popcorn.

(Yes, the long sleeves and gloves were back.)

"Ingrid's still looking into 'the best-rated new releases from 2030'," He replied, a little wryly, his tone betraying the quotation marks, which meant it wasn't actually a joke. "So, we'll see."

"They don't have Google in 2030?" Jesse guessed. "Lucky them."

"Looking into getting them for this place," Bucky amended. "I honestly didn't get half of what she said about it."

Something something 'needing to find an in into the right timeline'.

Jesse made an amused noise.

"Are you going to come in and check this one out too?" she asked. "You know, 'best-rated new releases of the 1930s' and all."

Bucky's little smile went a little wry, once more.

"Why, you angling to get a free drink again?"

"Or I'm angling to buy you more popcorn," Jesse returned, just as wry.

Bucky gave a little huff, like she got him there. His chin dipped for a second with it.

"Well, you're gonna have to pick your angle soon," he said, looking up at her again. "Show's about to start."

"Get me an extra popcorn?" Jesse tried, grinning a little bit.

She honestly wasn't trying to flirt; she was just alone on this island and there was something about James that put her strangely at ease.

Which was something Bucky was going to end up feeling guilty about, sooner or later. Right now, he was just stuck on the ease of his wryly amused smile.

As he went to get another tub of popcorn.

"And you'll owe me a soda next time," she added. She'd like to say it was perfectly timed for the moment he was too far in filling up the tub to stop, but the truth was she'd been mulling over that quip and that was just the moment it burst out of her.

For some measure of 'burst' that was really, really understated.

Bucky kind of faltered, anyway, with the popcorn. But he kept his eyes firmly on the machine even as his lips curved again.

"Next time, huh?"
