"Hey, there are donuts today. Feel free to take one," Jaye greeted the class. She had not bought donuts, they were just there and she felt like that probably meant they were free and for the taking.

"Today we're going to talk about A question posed by the philosopher Plato back in the BC times: Is it better to be just, even if one could get away with being unjust? Meaning, should you actually try to be a good person if no one's watching you and there aren't any consequences for doing bad? Discuss."

She'd shared free donuts someone else probably bought for another person so you know where she fell on this.

"Well, you're not actually a good person if you're only doing it when people can notice," Steve said.

Jaye, who was not a great person, agreed. But.

"Why not?"

"Because if you're doing because it's the right thing, you'll just do it," Steve said. "If you're waiting for credit, it's no longer for honor."

"Honor?" People used that word outside of movies? "Really?"

Eleanor made Jaye slightly feel better about her own life?

"And you don't worry about what people think, or whether you're going to hell?"

Eleanor snorted in amusement. “I don’t care what anyone thinks about me-“

Steve smiled. "Naval Academy grad. There was absolutely a code of honor."

"That could also go into a whole thing about whether it's worth being good if you're not sure hell exists," Jaye said.

Having met the devil kinda made her think so?

"Huh," she said, still mulling that over. "Learned something new today."

"Happy to help," Steve said. "I can still recite it."

"Well, now you have to."

You knew that was coming.

Steve shifted into parade rest almost unconsciously, focused on the far wall and recited, "Midshipmen are persons of integrity: They stand for that which is right. They tell the truth and ensure the truth is known. They do not lie. They embrace fairness in all actions. They ensure that work submitted as our own is our own, and that assistance received from any source is authorized and properly documented. They do not cheat. They respect the property of others and ensure that others are able to benefit from the use of their own property. They do not steal."

He smiled. "And that was enforced."

"Well hell is for really bad people," Eleanor replied with a dismissive wave of her hand. "Not for regular people."

Eleanor is going to have a rude awakening in the afterlife.
