Duke came into work that day with a boisterous greeting over his crate of fresh seafood -- only to see his kitchen staff scramble to shove something away and failing spectacularly at looking "normal".

"Nope," he said, after a moment of watching them. "I don't want to know."

He's pretty sure he's not going to let anything ruin his good mood today.

Since the food she had bought last time had been quite tasty, and the conversation had been nice, Lucille had decided to stop by again.

"Good afternoon," she greeted after entering, offering a small smile.

"Hey," Duke said. "How'd that lunch with your friend go?"

"We both enjoyed the food very much ~~even though I can't speak for Tisarwat~~," Lucille replied. "Which is why I am here, although today I would prefer seafood."

She had the impression that it was popular among the Radchaai.

"You're in luck," Duke said, nodding to the specials sign. "Seafood happens to be my specialty."

"So I see," Lucille said. "What is squid ink pasta? Is it actual squid ink?"

"It is, yeah. Basically, the squid ink gets added to the pasta dough before cooking, and it adds sort of a subtly briny flavor. And turns the pasta dark black, which personally I find very fun."

"Black pasta? That is something I haven't tried, but it does sound visually appealing."

She smiled.

"So, black pasta with calamari for two, and a bottle of wine."

"Coming right up," Duke said, signaling the kitchen. "So. How's your week been?"

"Quiet, so far," Lucille said. "Neither my friend nor I were affected by the oddness during the weekend."

They would have been such a good Disney villain team.

"And yourself?"

"My girlfriend was a mermaid. She rescued me when the porg war on my boat knocked me overboard. It was weird."

"At least she didn't try to drown you," Lucille said. "Isn't that what mermaids usually do?"

Lucille hadn't picked up on the Disney theme.

"The old myths can go either way, really," Duke said. "They either lure sailors to their deaths, or help them survive shipwrecks. Or . . . occasionally grant wishes. But no, she was extremely cheerful and giggly. It was kind of off putting."

"It does sound quite annoying," Lucille said sincerely, without knowing anything about Octavia. "I assume she is back to her usual self now, at least."

"And recovering nicely from the ordeal, yes, thanks for asking," Duke said lightly. "Gotta say, I'm not usually on the outside of these things. I'm not actually sure which side I prefer."

"I always prefer to be on the outside," Lucille said. "There is something disconcerting about not being yourself, and sometimes your friends do need some protection."

She tried not to think about Halloween.

"It's definitely disconcerting," Duke agreed. "But also sometimes kind of . . . freeing." He shrugged. "Maybe that's just me."

"I can't speak for others," Lucille said. "But I have to admit I do not feel the same. Those transformations were one of the things that made me hesitant to return."

"There've been kind of a lot of them this year." Especially if you dressed up for Halloween. "I feel like we got a bit of a break from Fandom specific weirdness for a bit last year."

"So I missed that break," Lucille said. "Then perhaps this year will be quieter, although I doubt it works that way."

"Yeah, it's probably more likely we'll get hit harder, just for complaining."

"Sadly, that is very likely," Lucille said. "At least I have decided that it is still worth living here, compared to the alternative."

"It definitely beats my hometown," Duke agreed. "I go back and forth on whether it beats being at sea."

The fact that he hadn't gone to see for more than short breaks since getting here didn't mean anything, really!

"Those two can be combined though, can't they?" Lucille said. "It is just next to the island, after all."
