Community Center class: Fandom Home Companion

Duke had brought his ukulele to class today, and was idly strumming it as he waited to see which, if any, students came in today. He had the usual list on the board:

Fandom go-bag
1. booze
2. poncho
3. dish soap
4. an inner tube

"So," he said. "Fandom has its wacky weekends, but most of them are actually perfectly normal. Even boring. So. What do you do on your downtime? When there's absolutely no crisis or excitement of any kind?" He strummed his ukulele again. "I'm a fan of music. I play this sucker and guitar, and am a pretty good drummer. I'm a fan of swimming, when it's not literally freezing outside, and I like to read. What do you do to pass the time?"

What do you do for fun? Alone? In groups? Murder that time!

Iris

"I sing," Iris offered. "I ain't bad."

She was really good, actually.

The rest of it was a little more complicated. She had plenty of hobbies but she'd found ways over the years to turn most of them into her professions…

"I like goin' for a fly," she settled on. "Flowers, though the argument could be made that ain't strictly for fun, since I got my own greenhouse, but yeah, I like to garden. I have a lot of training in ikebana too."

Iris grinned faintly.

"Tryin' to teach my bird tricks."

"You have a bird, huh?" Duke said. "You know, I taught a class on bird haberdashery last year. If you ever want to give yours a hat, let me know."

He didn't have any more idea how to make hats for birds that he'd had last year around this time. Let's be real.

"Oh, I dunno," she said, amused. "Silly, what do you think?"

There was a series of sleepy chirps from her hair before a tiny yellow bird with black eyes bumbled unsteadily out onto her shoulder, fluffing his teeny wings.

Faye Valentine

"I take care of myself," Faye offered with a light shrug, and held up one manicured hand to show what she meant. "Do my nails, touch up my hair, moisturize, tan when it's not freezing...."

A pause, as she considered what else she was willing to volunteer, and added, "I also read magazines."

Duke wasn't the sort to go full on heart eyes over tiny things, but rest assured, he was doing it internally.

"That is one very well named bird," he decided. "What tricks does it know?"

"I can't decide if that list means you don't spend a lot of time by yourself or you're just . . . kinda boring," Duke teased. "Since I can't imagine you need enough work for all that to take up that much time."

"The spa in town ain't bad," she offered. "If you're lookin' for more ways to pamper yourself."

"This," Faye replied, gesturing expansively to herself, "requires hours of daily upkeep, all of which will eventually be futile, but still." She sighed, because she did sort of resent being called boring, and added, "I also like to fly my ship."

There. That was an interest that wasn't primping, stealing, drinking, or being preoccupied with her own survival. Fine.

Based on this chick's hair, she clearly knew what she was talking about. "Yeah? It would be nice to, you know, outsource it every once in awhile." As much as Faye could be a perfectionist about these things, she was also very lazy.

Duke also tended to steal or drink in his free time! Those were legit hobbies in his opinion.

“Going flying works. I’ve been known to set sail out of sheer boredom myself.”
