Fandom Fire Station, Friday
Travis lay sprawled on the floor of the garage, between the absurdly tiny fire engine and the absurdly tiny ladder truck (both of which had been tuned up and cleaned within an inch of their lives). He stared up at the ceiling, trying to rationalize abandoning this backwards-ass town and going back to Seattle, where maybe he had to pull an old man's balls out of his shower chair on a regular basis, but at least things made sense.
He was homesick. He could admit that. "I'm homesick." See?
"I miss my team. Andy and Maya and Jack and Ben and Robert and Dean and Vic...." He missed Andy's soap opera personal life and Maya's insane competitive drive. He missed Jack's ridiculous foundling family and Ben's ridiculous attempts to make the job he loved less terrifying for the woman he loved. He missed parties on Dean's houseboat and Vic's singing. "... And Pruitt." He missed Pruitt's--he missed Pruitt. "I'm going to miss Pruitt's funeral.
"But if I leave, these people are screwed." If he left, this town wouldn't have a fire station. It was a minor miracle the entire place hadn't burned down, even if the mayor did insist that "these people have a way of handling things themselves", whatever that meant. "Of course, the only life I've saved all week was a raccoon's. Who was probably fine anyway. Maybe they really don't need me."
He pressed a hand to his collar, where his shiny new lieutenant bars were supposed to be pinned. "I can't believe that bastard stole my bars." He let his hand flop back to the floor. "And now I'm talking to myself. You see what you've done to me, Fandom?" He squinted, staring into the rafters. "... Is that a squirrel nest?"
