The Perk, Saturday Morning

For once, Jesse wasn't bringing her work to the Perk.

She was just. At the Perk. To drink her nice warm coffee and stare out the window.

(When was the last time I just stared out the window?)

She'd given herself the day off, and, well. She wasn't really used to that. Eventually she was maybe going to figure out what to do with it, but until then, staring it was.

Shunsui was absolutely dragging his heels on the way to a portal back to the Soul Society for another meeting. Mentally, anyway, since physically, he still managed to be almost impossibly graceful and quiet as he fluttered about and into the coffee shop once an idle glance through the window provided an excellent excuse for a distraction.

(Sorry, Jesse).

"Ahhh, Jesse-chan~~ ♥. I believe I already know the answer, but I don't suppose you're in need of a little sake to accompany your drink ♥?"

Oh boy.

"No, thanks," Jesse said, looking up. "It's... way too early."

"Well," said Shunsui, who very much on cue still poured a cup for himself, "I certainly wouldn't be anyone to judge ♥."

And, with that, he lifted his cup in a toast and threw in a wink her way, before taking a hearty sip.

"Though I do agree with you, Jesse-chan, it is way too early..."

For existing, though. Not for sake.

Honestly, it should be criminal that he would need to be up at such am impossibly before-noon hour...

"It's not stopping you," Jesse pointed out wryly.

"It never does ♥," Shunsui agreed easily with a bright smile, and a little more sake poured into his cup. "So! Jesse-chan, how have you been, my dear ♥? It's been a while since I have been so fortunate as to have crossed your path, it seems ♥."

And hopefully, defying experience and expectations, she'd have plenty to say and take a great deal of time doing it until, next thing he knew, oh goodness, look at the time, it's much too late to make it to that meeting now, better luck next time!

Had he met Jesse? 80% of her word count was entirely internal.

"Same old, same old," she said practically, just glad he wasn't flirting with her too much. "Endless paperwork, nosy brewery raccoons, and I'm trying to have some troughs installed already so we'll have a way to feed everyone next time we turn into ponies."

Shunsui couldn't stand these meetings. They were almost everything he might consider torture. This was a very desperate man right now, Jesse.

Still, even if his hopes were far exceeded by his actual expectations, that actually seemed...encouragingly chatty. Because, yes, he had met her.

He let out a soft laugh. "I wasn't under the impression that the pony thing was an occurrence so frequent as to warrant such a solution, Jesse-chan ♥."

Maybe they could use it for booze in the off-season!

"Even if it's only useful once a year," Jesse said, "It's a small, easy-to-fix thing we can just... easily fix."

"And where," asked Shunsui, hardly believing he could ever be so invested in such a topic, "might the proposed location of this sometime-pony trough be, Jesse-chan ♥?"

After all, was this truly much more engaging than anything than would be covered at the Gotei 13 meeting?

Well, considering that this was coming from someone who looked like Jesse rather than someone who looked like Genryūsai Yamamoto, and that Shunsui could take comfort in it being very unlikely he'd be called to action on the matter....yes. Yes it certainly was.

Jesse at the Perk wasn’t exactly an unusual sight, but Jesse at the Perk sans paperwork? Somewhat more so.

“Morning,” Liam greeted, gaze flicking down to Jesse’s unusually-bereft-of-paperwork table.

You know, I never took him for the practical type, Jesse mused, surprised.

"It'd have to be somewhere central and relatively easy to reach for a pony," she said, "So nowhere where the stairs are too steep or too small. Near Phoenix Place, maybe, or by the park, across from Black Swan Drive..."

"Morning," Jesse said, looking up at him, sounding somewhere between 'chipper', 'confused' and 'regular levels of Jesse-like flat competence'. "Grabbing your morning caffeine shot?"

“Currently trying to decide between a regular tea or a chai latte,” Liam shared, mostly sounding amused that this was a dilemma at all.

"Asking the tough questions," Jesse said, nodding. She sipped her coffee. "Depends on how bad the regular tea is, I guess."

“Even that’s a matter of perspective,” Liam pointed out. “I think it’s fine, if nothing special. Seivarden, I’m fairly sure, almost takes it personally how bad she finds it.”

No one ever did. That was the point.

Even if Shunsui's idea of practically usually involved pestering beautiful women in coffee shops to prevent him from making it to meetings on time. But this beautiful woman also happened to be the mayor, after all. He couldn't be expected to so friviloisly dismiss the mayor, could he?

"Putting it near the park," Shunsui mused, with a crooked, thoughtful grin, imagining it with a sip of his sakd, "will no doubt ensure it will eventually be used for one of Skywalker-san's absurd summer activities...♥."

Or a booze trough. He was definitely leaning on it eventually just becoming a booze trough.

"Well, did you and Seivarden swap bodies this morning?" Jesse asked, amused. "Because otherwise I don't think she has much to say about it."

"Good point," Jesse said. She raised her cup and took a meditative sip. "Not the park, then. Skywalker can torture the kids with his own stuff."

Steve was finished with his normal run, so he was stopping in to grab coffees for himself and Tony. "Good morning," he said with a smile.

"Morning," Jesse said without looking up.

Then she looked up.

Ah.

And there was no way Jesse would know just how close that suggestion came to hitting a sore spot of Liam's- as reluctant as he was to share his hybrid status in general, 'Oh, and also I can steal other people's memories and appearance' was something he definitely didn't bring up.

"No," he agreed. "Good point." He excused himself to go order said beverage, and then was back a minute later, chai latte in hand.

"So, how's your morning so far?" he asked, tilting his head towards the chair across from her in an unspoken question. Did she mind some company?

Steve kept smiling. "How's the coffee today?"

Jesse motioned at the chair with a headtilt of her own. He was fine, he could sit down.

"Quiet," she said. "I figured I'd take a day or two off, and... now I'm kind of lost as to what to do with them."

"Fine," Jesse said, forcing herself to look back down at her cup. Don't say anything about James. He wouldn't like it if you did. "It won't burn a hole in your tongue, but it'll keep you up."

Steve chuckled. "I'm used to the kind that burns a hole in my tongue--Tony gets distracted and the coffee just cooks for hours--so here is a nice treat."
