Mystery Sign Theater 3000, Sunday

Vague promises had been made, and so they also had to be kept. And so, on this Sunday, the marquee at the MST3K proudly read:

NOW SHOWING
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Because Ingrid took requests.

(Because Bucky took requests.)

Mystery Sign Theatre 3000 was open, come boggle at what the 1960s thought was a perfectly acceptable movie for kids.

There weren't as many palm trees, this time.

But there was a Bucky, giving a wary eye to the corner of the concessions stand that had already sprouted Halloween candies somehow.

A down-on-his-luck inventor turns a broken-down Grand Prix car into a fancy vehicle for his children, and then they go off on a magical fantasy adventure to save their grandfather in a far-off land.

I'm so tired.

Wanda was unreasonably excited to watch a bad musical about a flying car. She had only watched it on TV in Sokovia so watching Toot Sweets on the big screen? An event in her mind.

"Hey there."

"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?"

Jesse... still wasn't a movie buff.

"That's not porn, right?"

Bucky stuffed the Halloween something-or-other he'd been looking at back in the stand, and looked up.

"Hey," he said, with something half-approaching a smile. "You made it."

If it was any consolation, Bucky hadn't actually known this one, either. Even if for him it was a question of having been on-ice when it had first come out.

"Nah," he said, after a soft huff. "No one's put a request in for that, so far."

"Well it was my request," she said. "Of course I'm going to see it."

It was an odd request too, she somehow doubted anyone else in town was going to be excited to see it.

"Should I be thanking you or Ingrid for getting it?"

"Ingrid, of course," Bucky said easily. "I take no responsibility."

Credit. He took no credit.

"Uh huh," she said, smiling slightly. "It might be for the best not to take responsibility for this one. It's supposed to be a kid's movie but it was made in the late 60's so the odds of the writers being on drugs were high, and it shows."

Jesse made an amused noise, walking closer towards him. "Would you, if they did?" she wondered.

Bucky shrugged a little. "Yeah, you said something like that."

And then Ingrid had said something like it, too.

"I'm sure I've seen worse."

"Depends how well they were likely to behave," Bucky quipped. "But last I heard, there's more private ways in modern times you can get your fix of that."

(He was... more familiar than he would admit. But not by a lot.)

"You just wait," she said. "It's gonna be up there."

Not H.R. Pufnstuf bad but still...bad.

"But then again, I don't know how to you spend your evenings. You could be a secret bad movie connoisseur."

For all Wanda knew he could be Bucky Barnes: Sharknado expert.

"Hey, some people have kinks," Jesse joked, and hoped that wasn't taking things too far, and tried to fix it in case that she had with a, "So what's the movie?"

Sadly he was just someone who often slept with the TV on to get any sleep at all.

He shrugged a little, with a wry look. "Sorry to disappoint," he said, then nodded at all the concessions. "You want snacks to go with it?"

Bucky was grateful for that subject change, for... complicated reasons. "It's about a flying car?"

This was still the best description he could come up with. Even now, yes.

"I think it's only appropriate I take advantage of the Halloween candy," Wanda said. "As the resident person in town who celebrates Halloween way too early."

"Maybe that's where this is spreading from," Bucky said with a look at the candy in question. "'Cause it's not supposed to be here yet. It just showed up."

"See? Exactly like the decorations at my place," Wanda said. "There's some mysterious Halloween benefactor, I'm telling you. Let's just hope they keep using their powers for good."

"Oh," Jesse said, "So... 60s?"

"Apparently," Bucky said, shrugging.

Then he paused to consider it.

"What about it says sixties?" he asked, once he had. "Don't think they had a lot of flying cars back then."

"It's like... old-fashioned sci-fi stuff people used to dream about more in the 50s and the 60s, I guess?" Jesse offered. "Growing up I watched those old cartoons sometimes. Flying cars and glass domes and robot nannies..."

Bucky's first instinct was to think that was bad news, but even he knew better than to actually voice that particular bit of paranoia.

So instead, he gave a vague nod, and then a more deliberate one at the Halloween candy corner of the stand.

"So which ones would you like? Take your pick."

"Only saw one of those things way before that," Bucky said, after another little quiet beat. It was... a bittersweet memory, at best.

Maybe the last day he'd felt like --

Anyway.

He stuck his hands in his pockets. "And then never saw one again."
