Coping through Cuisine, Community Center, Monday evening

Class today was meeting not in the community center, but in front of the Turtle and Canary.

Hannibal greeted them all and waved them inside and out of the wind. "Welcome. So far we have covered some topics on cooking, but we haven't yet covered one thing that comes before that. Namely, shopping." He smiled. "For some people, shopping is a comfort in and of itself. Looking for what you need or what you want, being able to get it, finding new varieties, can be a comfort in itself. For others, comfort can come from knowing you will be prepared in the future."

He nodded toward the store. "So, today we will be discussing some of what you might need in future, whether it be staples to allow you to cook on your own, simple ingredients so that you can avoid cooking if you don't enjoy it, or simply food you want to have around. And as a comfort, your purchases are on me. Worrying about money is neither a comfort nor a topic of this course."

T&C is open! Shop! Hannibal can help as needed, especially if you're not sure what staples are good to have around. The shop has everything but...no, wait, there's duct tape now, too. Watch out for the cheese panda.

Kurt had always enjoyed cooking and shopping with his parents back home, but there was quite a difference between then and now- in both cuisines and situation. So, he was definitely going to be asking for some pointers on where to even start.

"If this was a market back home in Bavaria, I'd be right at home" he said with a slight grin. "But all this" he said glancing around at the rather impressive store, "is a bit much to get through. Also, most of my cooking revolves around dishes from back home. I don't know where to begin with most American dishes."

After the class was over Kurt waited until anyone else who wanted to catch Dr. Lecter after class had had the chance to do so. Then he approached with a somewhat timid demeanor.

"Dr. Lecter?" he started. " Would... I mean is... is it ok if I asked you something, something no directly related to today's lesson? If not I understand" he added quickly. "There's just... not really anyone else I can ask" he said with a slight hopeful grin.

Guillermo had maybe gotten quite a few extra ingredients and snacks then needed but it was for class and he didn’t have to worry about costs so that made it okay right?

Even though Jo had been in T&C before, shopping for food was still a bit daunting so she wasn’t sure what she should get so she had a look around to see what options there were first.

He had been getting better with things in regards to cooking and all but shopping was still a bit of challenge. Namely trying to figure out how much to get. Because really? How was someone supposed to know how much pasta to buy to make enough spaghetti for four meals? It was all still confusing!

Liz didn’t do a lot of cooking these days when she was home but she figured that maybe she could look into doing more baking, so she thought that might be a good place to start.

"Who says you have to cook American food?" Hannibal asked. "Buy what you like to cook what you like."

"Of course," Hannibal said. "How can I help you, Kurt?"

"There is quite a selection, isn't there?" Hannibal smiled at her.

"How are you managing?" Hannibal asked as he passed.

Hannibal smiled and nodded as he passed her, pleased she seemed to be doing better.

Kurt gave a nod, as if he was trying to convince himself to go ahead.

"I was wondering if you could tell me a little more about what it was like being with the X-Men? What were they like?"

What Kurt really wanted to as was what was he like when he was an X-Man and what did he need to do to get there. But you know, baby steps. It was something he really had not stopped thinking of since that day Dr. Lecter mentioned it.

"Doing ok for the most part" Dwight said with a nod and then a somewhat sheepish grin. "Sorry for being a little MIA the last week or two. Things have been pretty hectic at the shop."

"You realize there's no guarantee that the X-Men I knew are anything like the ones in your world," Hannibal started.

Hannibal waved that off. "I'm aware that things happen. I hope you've been well?"

"I know" Kurt said slowly, thoughtfully. "But its still a dream I've had since I realized there are others like me. I...I know they might not be the same when I get there. And I know I might never make it in my world. But... But I think I still want to know. Makes it easier to work towards something like that. Even just knowing what I could do and what I need to do to get there. I...I want to know. And who knows, maybe I can make it happen!" Kurt ended with a somewhat confident and hope smile.

Jo nodded, "I never quite know what to get," she admitted, "last time we had to come here for Home Economics but that was just for an imaginary shopping trip about essential food shopping and sticking to a budget,"

Hannibal nodded. "Well, they are a large and rather contentious family. There are several different locations they live in; I was at the New York school. A version of Kitty Pryde is currently headmistress. My husband Jono was one of the instructors. They have a fairly large student body - some who may become X-Men in the future, some who simply want to live their own lives. There are always problems from one group or another, but they're doing well."

"And this is the antithesis of that," Hannibal pointed out. "Although you should feel free to get the essentials as well. You enjoy hot cocoa - why not start with the ingredients for that? Perhaps a snack that goes with it?" he suggested.

"I do like the sound of that," Jo nodded as she considered what she would need to get for that, "and maybe biscuits or chocolate?"

Kurt listened and nodded slowly as Hannibal spoke.

"Sounds like the team back home too" he said with a slight smirk. "I know I'm still just a kid and there's a lot I have to do and learn still, but I'll take it. I'm glad for the challenge. Gives me something to look forward to and something to work towards."

Because if Kurt was anything at all he was spunky and maybe a little stubborn too when he set his mind to something.

"Biscuits and chocolate are always good," Hannibal agreed.
