Buck had spent a good week in LA with Eddie and Chris. Unfortunately, nothing had gone too nuts at the 118 that he could jump in on, but it had been nice to see Bobby, Hen and Chim.

Now he was back at the station, preparing for a boring day when all of a sudden a friend jumped up on the reception desk.

"A kitty!" he exclaimed. Then another one popped up. "What--two kitties!"

It was gonna be a good day.

"Hey, did you--" Eddie began before getting distracted by the cats here as well. "--adopt a lot of cats."

"I didn't adopt shit," Buck said as he scratched the chin of cat number one. "But I could be convinced."

"Well, then I don't have you to blame for Christopher falling in love with a random cat in his room before school."

This time he didn't. But it could always happen in the future.

"Did he?" Buck asked, laughing. "It's got to be some island thing then. The cutest island thing ever."

"It's the least weird one, that's for sure," Eddie said, crouching down to pet one of the cats that was butting it's head against his leg.

And he hadn't even seen the really weird things yet!

"Well now you've jinxed it," Buck joked. "These cats are probably going to go full on gremlin if you feed them after midnight now."

"I'm just being honest! You all are so superstitious, you know that?" he replied, laughing quietly and shaking his head at the cat.

"We are superstitious for good reason," Buck said. "You are in denial."

About so, so many things.

"I am not." He was in so much denial.

"You are in denial about being in denial." So there.

[justalittlerepressed]

"That isn't even a thing." Somewhere... a therapist was begging him to think about that.

"Ooooh triple denial," Buck teased. "That's rare."

Eddie gave him a gentle shove for that. "Ha ha. See if I share this cat with you now."

There were dozens just loitering around outside the station, Eddie.

"If you have to worry about sharing a cat with anyone, it'd be Christopher," Buck said. "You better hope he doesn't fall too hard for one otherwise we're going to PetCo this weekend."

"Couldn't he just be allergic?" Eddie whined, knowing full well that he'd be the one taking care of that cat in the end.

"Eddie, that's mean," Buck said, happily letting one of the cats sit comfortably in his lap. "Why would you want your son to be allergic to something so cute?"

Then the cat started making biscuits on his thighs. "...ow."

"Gee, I wonder why," Eddie snorted. "You're going to be all clawed up before these cats leave."

"Well good thing I know an EMT who can patch me up." Sure, patch up Buck's scratched thighs, that wouldn't be weird.

It would just be a perfectly normal time between bros!

"Do not abuse the privilege of free patching up," he warned with a grin. "Not even for a cute cat."

"But look at her," Buck said, lifting the cat off his lap to show Eddie. "Look at her face."

The cat looked like it was going to punch Buck any moment now.

"She looks like a cat, Buck," Eddie said, trying to guide him to putting the cat down before they had to treat a case of cat scratch fever. Which was, in fact, a real thing. "You know, I would have pegged you more as a dog person."

No, no. Bobby was enough of that for all of them.

"I have enough love in my heart for all animals," Buck said, placing the cat down on the desk. Because, yes, lets not ruin Buck's face. "Used to work on a ranch."

This was before bartending in South America with questionable highlights and pooka shells.

The questionable highlights were really the best part of it all.

"A ranch? Really?" Eddie, don't sound so fond about that. It was verging on less bro than necessary here.

"Oh yeah," Buck said with a nod. "Rode horses, wrangled cows, the whole deal. Wore the hat and everything."

"Do you... still have this hat?" Because that was going to warrant pictures being taken because that mental image was amazing.

Or being used as a costume idea for Chris this year.
