The Perk - Sunday Morning

It was Christmas Eve and the days that they had left before their house arrest was getting so close now. Cutter was trying to not think about that and he had decided that he wanted to spend as much time outside as possible. He had been working on the anomaly prediction model for a couple of hours that morning but he had decided to have a coffee break and sent a text to Connor asking if he wanted to join him.

Now he was sitting at a booth, the coffees had been ordered and all he had to do was wait for Connor.

Connor had been working that morning on the lessons he had for his current classes online. He wasn't sure how long he had been plugging away but it had been a few hours easily. So when he got the text from Cutter he gladly finished up the module and headed over to the Perk.

"Hey Nick, thanks for the text" he said with a smile as he took a seat. "Needed an excuse to step away from the lesson modules for a bit."

Cutter smiled when Connor joined him, “you’re welcome, I was doing some work on the anomaly prediction model, I thought we could both do with a break,” he said, “how have classes been going?”

"You are a smart man Nick Cutter" Connor said as he took the coffee Cutter had gotten for him with a smile and took a sip. "And classes are going alright, got two classes right now but with them being online they are pretty much self-paced so I'm trying to knock them out as quickly as I can. The next class I need to take after these will have a lot of research and a big paper attached so I'm trying to get a head start on the research and all." Why yes, this was Connor Temple, trying to be serious and responsible with classes- imagine that!

Cutter smiled as he thought back to their first meeting, at how much had changed, “well the offers still there to help,” he told him, “i should see if Becker can send over some books that I still have at the house and office, I think those will be useful for research,”

"Oh that would be great if he could, thanks Nick!" Connor said with a grin. " I might actually need to bounce some ideas off you. The paper is the foundation of the dissertation later. Trying to find a topic for it all. I'd like to be able to do something related to climate and environments but haven't been able to narrow anything down just yet."

“You’re welcome, I’ll send a message to Becker to make the arrangements, hopefully by the New Year, they’ll be here,” Cutter smiled, “and climate and the environment is a great topic, I’ll definitely be happy to bounce ideas off you,”

Connor grinned at that. "Definitely appreciate it! I figured it would be a topic with plenty to research and still has good current and future applications and all, so it would be an applicable topic to focus on for everything"

Conor took another drink of his coffee, trying not to feel too nervous about everything that was coming along. Everything was moving so quickly and he knew he would be alright, but he still felt nervous about it all.

“The university will definitely approve of the research potential,” Cutter nodded as he took a sip of his own coffee, “and I can definitely help proof read it and help as much as I can in the meantime,”

"Aye, I want to find something I can focus on, something that combines both the paleontology/evolutionary history side of things and the more modern and current focus as well. Figured something looking at how climate and habitat changes of the past can help us see what's going on today." Connor smiled sheepishly. "I know it needs some fine-tuning, but it's a start at least. How's the anomaly prediction model coming along? Got the newest points Sarah sent over plotted out yet?"

Cutter smiled, “that sounds like a wonderful idea and it’s not an area that’s typically researched,” he said as took a sip of his drink, “and the anomaly prediction model is coming along,” he told Connor, “I’ve started to plot them but one thing I’m finding it’s definitely not the same working on it in a lab,” he admitted.

"I know it is not the ideal setting but I am glad we were able to figure out something for the time being" Connor said. "It's important work and I am glad we can keep working on it, even with Christine and Wilder trying to stop it. It kinda feels good, working on it to spite them in a way ya know?"

Cutter smiled at that, “aye, it does feel good, especially since it would definitely annoy them to know that we could still help the ARC,”

"Exactly. They would hate knowing they could keep us away from the ARC but not stop us from helping the team as much as we can. It's good for Lester and the team and for us as well!"

Cutter nodded as he took a sip of his coffee, “it will definitely be good for us, I think once the anomaly prediction model is up and running it will definitely be better for us and will us stay one step ahead of Christine and Wilder,”

"Anything to keep the anomalies and the artifact away from her right?" Connor agreed as he took another drink of his coffee. "I'd hate to think what it would be like if she had managed to keep the artifact. At least now we can keep working to fight against whatever it is they are really up to!"

Connor went silent for a moment, wondering whether he should ask this or not. "So umm... how's the keyboard? You been playing any?" Connor had been out of the flat a lot the last week trying to get everything ready so he wasn't sure just how much Cutter might have beenusing it while he was out.

Cutter nodded, “At least that’s one thing that worked in our favour, she never got the artifact,”

He shifted a bit, “um…I haven’t started playing it yet,” he admitted softly.

"That's alright Nick" he said with a small nod. "There'll be plenty of time while were at the flat." He reached out and took Cutter's hand gently. "I know it's hard but I'm going to be here to help you any way I can."

Cutter stared down at his coffee, “I’m sorry,” he said quietly, “I really thought I was going to be ready to start playing again,”

"Hey. Nothing to apologize about Nick, I... I know this is a big step" he said as he gently rubbed Cutter's hands as he held them. "We'll figure it out, whenever you feel ready alright? No pressure at all."

Cutter nodded, feeling comforted by that rub, “I’m going to try though, I want to be able to play again I don’t want …I don’t want her to take that away from me,”

"And she won't," Connor said gently, knowing there was no need to mention names when they both knew who they were referring to. "I realized I haven't sung at all since everything happened and... I don't want to lose that either. I think we both have some things we need to fight to take back from her," he said with an encouraging smile.

Cutter gave a small hopeful smile at that, “we do, if we do them together, she won’t be able to take them away from us, we’ll get our love of music back,”

"And it will be a great way to pass the time- challenge ourselves a little and see how far we can go" Connor said giving Cutter's hand a gentle squeeze. "I'm looking forward to it- I miss singing a lot actually."

Cutter returned the gentle hand squeeze, “I miss playing the piano,” he admitted, “I guess I’m just scared of playing when I know I won’t be as good as before,”

"We'll help each other get better. and the process will be manageable because we are doing it together" Connor said softly. "I am proud of you Nick, for even wanting to try and do this."

Cutter gave a small smile at that, “I couldn’t have gotten this far without you,” he said, “thank you for not giving up on me,”

"You're welcome. And I am only here because of you" Connor said returning the smile. "You saw something in me when no one else did and helped me get started at the ARC and you are supporting me now that I am going back to Uni. Your support means the world to me Nick. Thank you."

Cutter smiled warmly at that, "you're welcome Connor, you're support means the world to me as well, I'm glad that we're able to help each other get through this,"
