The Park, Saturday Afternoon

The weather was warming up again, enough that Arden had figured a nice trip to the park to feed the birds sounded like the perfect daytime activity. Spring was in the air, and spring had always been her season, even before her elemental powers had fully awakened.

She had forgotten, however, how much more aggressive the birds on the island were. She'd been sitting on a bench, minding her own business, tossing birdseed with one hand and playing on her phone with the other when a flamingo had come over to her to start nosing at her. "Hey," she protested. "Cut it out. You don't even like birdseed, I'm pretty sure."

To her utter lack of surprise, the bird hadn't listened to her at all. If anything it'd doubled down, going from nudging at her to headbutting her, until she'd finally gotten up. "Okay, okay!" she said exasperated. "Look, I'm leaving, you can have the ben--whoa!" Her getting up had apparently been what it was after, but not to make her leave. Instead, it'd pushed and prodded her over to a small mound by the lake, where another flamingo was waiting. As soon as Arden got close enough, it had stood up, revealing an egg beneath it, and walked over to its presumed mate.

And then they'd just stared at her. Expectantly.

"Uhh...that's a very pretty egg?" she hazarded. Maybe they were trying to get her to admire it. "Good job? Proud of you?"

She was pretty sure flamingoes couldn't roll their eyes, but it seemed like these two were making the attempt.

"Well, what do you--oh. Oh no. Absolutely not. I didn't come out here to eggy-sit. I'm not actually a bird you know. No way. Not gonna happen." She crossed her arms and glared at them.

The flamingoes stared back.

"I mean it. No."

The flamingoes stared back.

"You gotta be shitting me."

The flamingoes stared back.

...Anyway, that was how Arden ended up carefully perched over a mound, hoodie tucked around the egg to keep it warm, using a small shelf of hardened air as a seat so she didn't accidentally put her full weight on the egg, while two flamingoes stood in the lake with the self-congratulatory air of parents who had escaped their duties for a well-deserved date.

"This is only lasting until I have to pee!" Arden called to them. "And then I'm leaving and you can't stop me!" The flamingoes didn't even turn to acknowledge her.

Fuckin' birds, man.
