The Perk - Thursday Morning
Yelena sat in the island's coffee house, her gaze fixed on the envelope the courier had just dropped off. Fanny lay under the table, her head resting comfortably on Yelena’s feet. The barista hadn’t been thrilled about having a dog in the Perk, but a generous tip and a few idle threats had quickly changed her mind. Yelena wasn’t entirely sure which tactic had worked better.
Her focus shifted back to the envelope with Melina’s handwriting scrawled across the front, immediately making her suspicious. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Melina—her adoptive mother just had a habit of taking liberties with Yelena’s life. She sipped her coffee, delaying the inevitable, but curiosity finally got the better of her.
She found a note on top:
"I know you hate surprises, but just go with it. Try not to roll your eyes or blow anything up. - M"
Yelena rolled her eyes anyway, but she unfolded the papers. The first document was a contract for a security job with—
“Stark Industries? Is she nuts?” Yelena muttered under her breath.
Then, she spotted the deed to a property.
“I own a freaking lighthouse?”
Yelena shook her head in disbelief and tossed the envelope on the table. A job with Stark Industries and a lighthouse—this was Melina’s idea of “laying low”? Yelena couldn’t help but laugh. Only Melina would think this was a normal next step.
She leaned back in her chair and sipped on her coffee, trying to wrap her mind around everything as she people watched.
