Perkolator: Open for Business
Anyone looking through Perkolator's windows before 6am would see Mrs. Smith setting up: taking chairs off tables, starting coffee machines, writing the daily specials on the board, etc. At 6am on the dot, she unlocks the door, then walks back behind the counter.

"What's your poison, kid? I've got it all."

Mrs. Smith pours up an extra-large double mocha and hands it over to Jake.
"Cream and sugar are over there." She points to a short counter that has cream pitchers, sugar shakers, stir-sticks and the like sitting on it.

Miss Sidle?

*One wouldn't think she'd drunk a third of her bodyweight in alcohol the night before.*

Actually, that's what I wanted to talk t'you about. A couple of the students got bit by those yeti things? And their bites make y'do some blinkin' weird stuff. Hank and Edward took some samples; is the biology lab set up to test somethin' like that? I'd really like to know what the squall's goin' on with it before somebody else gets bit.

*frowns, pulls out a notebook, begins writing*
If you have samples, I'll be glad to test them as I know how, but I can't guarantee I will know what has infected the other students. Gremlins are a bit beyond my experience.

*a few more notes* I'll find Hank or Edward and see what's going on. Thanks for letting me know.

She enters, orders a Chai Latte, and takes a seat to people watch.

"Yes, I am. Are you? I don't remember seeing you at the meeting last night."

"I'm Veronica, by the way," she says with a smile.
"Let's see, before all hell broke loose with Phoebe's gremlin bite, we decided to publish the paper weekly on Mondays so we can have Sunday as our production day. And we talked about some articles for the first edition. I don't think we have a name yet though."

Veronica shakes her head slightly and finishes the rest of her Chai Latte.
"I think I need another Chai."

"So, Jake, let's not think about that. Tell me about you."

Um. Just a plain coffee. We'll start with that.

"Never had coffee before? Then you've come to the right place. Let's start you with a small black coffee, on the house. If you don't like the taste, let me know and we'll try adding some cream or sugar."
She pours a small coffee for Aeryn and hands it over.

*sips*
All right, I'm going to need some of that other stuff you said to add. I don't know what any of it means, so just surprise me.

"Plain cream will mellow the flavor while diluting the coffee, as well as adding a, well, creamy flavor. Sugar will, obviously, make it sweeter without otherwise affecting the taste.
"Let's try this on for size..."
She pours in some cream and about a teaspoon of sugar, then hands it back to Aeryn.
"If that's not quite right, just add a little more until you find something tasty. Most everyone likes theirs differently, so experiment a little. Let me know if you need anything else."
Smith heads back to the register.
