The sign in the window of the rare book shop now reads:
OPEN
Students and Teachers:
If you are interested in ordering special-interest books, please see the proprietor.
A. Phale

The Diary of Anne Frank.
Do you have it?
no subject
"I...may. I will have to check my inventory. Although a first edition could be quite expensive. Are you certain you wouldn't prefer a paperback edition? I believe Mr. Black carries an excellent selection of paperbacks."
*gives you an odd look, as though he thinks he's seen you before but isn't certain*
no subject
Yeah. I know. I look like the record guy. Get over it.
This is a bookstore, right? So I want to buy a book. If it isn't first edition... well then at least a nice hard cover edition.
Besides... That Manny guy kind of freaks me out.

*takes a step so that he's standing between you and the bookshelves*
"And yes, this is a bookstore. I only deal in rare editions, however. I will have to check my inventory to see if I have the book you're looking for."
no subject
Rare is what I'm looking for.
*Throws down a thick wad of cash*
Go ahead and look. I can wait.

(mutters partly to himself but loud enough that you can hear)"You wouldn't happen to be acquainted with the Driver's Ed teacher at the school, would you?"
*reluctantly pulls a large, heavy-looking, and rather dusty ledger book from behind a very cluttered counter and begins to leaf slowly through the pages*
no subject
No. I already have a license.
*Squints at
Should I know him?
no subject
"Ah, no, not necessarily. Just wondered if he had put you up to coming here. Er, as an assignment. To buy a book. Er."
*goes back to leafing through the ledger*
no subject
Sorry. Never met the guy. The book is a gift. Actually... more like an apology.
Does that makes sense?
no subject
"Oh, a gift? For whom?"
*now focuses his attention on Martin rather than on the ledger*
no subject
I heard Anne Frank was one of her favorite books.
*Looks at
Flowers from me usually end up in rubbing alcohol instead of water.
no subject
"A book is a lovely gift. Flowers are lovely too, of course. But books tend to last a bit longer."
*walks directly over to a bookcase and pulls out a book, blowing a bit of dust off it*
"Will this do?"
*holds out a mint condition first-edition "Diary of Anne Frank"*
[note: on closer inspection you will find that the book has an inscription inside, 'O. Frank, 1947', but you can always save this discovery for later]
no subject
Thanks. What's the cost?
no subject
"Would you like me to wrap it in a bit of paper? To protect it?"
*Appears to be pleased with Martin's careful handling of the book*
no subject
I'll never turn down gift wrapping.
no subject
"Well, I don't know that I would call it gift wrapping, but I may be able to find something."
*Takes the book and heads off toward a curtain at the back of the shop*
"Help yourself to some tea if you like." *waves his hand toward a tea tray sitting on a small table next to two lumpy armchairs*
no subject
Thanks.
*Does not drink tea.*
no subject
(a few minutes later) "Here you are, Mr. Blank. I do hope she enjoys it."
no subject
"Thank *you*, Mr. Phale. Pleasure doing business"
*Heads toward door*
Nice chair
*Exits*
