Championship Vinyl, 9-30

Without anything in particular to do, Angela has wandered into town and started her shift at Championship Vinyl a few hours early. After checking in with Rob, she puts Throwing Muses' "University" album in the store CD player and sits behind the counter, working on her reading for government class and sipping an iced mocha.

Strolling along with a take-out cup of Perk coffee in one hand and her notebook in the other, Shane catches a smudge of red out of the corner of her eye. Backing up a step, she looks in the shop window and smiles as she sees a familiar face. Folding her notebook and stuffing it into the pocket of her hoodie, Shane opens the door and steps inside.

Wow, a record store. Very cool.

She approaches the counter and clears her throat a little. "Umm, hey," she says amiably.

Angela smiles, grateful for the interruption. She loves her job, but the shop can be really ... quiet.

"Hey! I haven't seen you since the church.

What's up? Anything I can, like, help you find?"

"Yeah, hi," Shane says with a smile as she nods. The smile becomes slightly bashful and self-conscious at the mention of the church. "Yeah! Right. Um, sorry, I was, uhhh... I was still kinda out of it at the church." Her eyes drift up to look at Angela's hair. "I couldn't forget that color, though," she says with a chuckle.

She shrugs and smiles. "Not a lot. I have mornings off since I'm not in class yet and I don't go in to work until four-thirty, so I've pretty much got the whole day to myself," she murmurs.

Angela draws a strand of hair in front of her eye, a little embarassed. "The color is called Crimson Glow. Eight bucks at the Emporium."

"You work at Deb's, right? I keep meaning to go there, but I haven't had a chance."

Seeing her embarrassment, Shane looks immediately contrite. "No, I -- I didn't mean it that way," she says quickly. "In a bad way." She smiles and adds in a genuinely sweet voice, "It's pretty."

"Yeah, I do," she says, nodding. "Waitress... and, I guess I kinda work in the vintage shop part, too, even though we don't really get too many customers."

Angela tucks her hair back behind the ear. "It's fine. I've had it this color for, like, a year, but I still sometimes get weirded out by the attention. Um ... thank you."

She thinks for a minute. "What kind of vintage do you have?"

"You're so very welcome," Shane says with a smile.

She pauses, chewing on her bottom lip for a moment as she thinks. "We've got a lot of stuff from the 60s, 70s and 80s," she says pensively. After a moment, she chuckles. "We might have some stuff from the 50s, too, but I haven't really gotten a chance to look around for myself, much."

Angela brightens. "Oh, you have eighties' stuff? That rocks. My friends were going to, like, go as the Breakfast Club, but it sounds like everyone is dressing up a lot, so we needed vintage prom dresses."

"Oh, yeah. I saw tons of dresses and stuff like that on the racks at the shop, absolutely," Shane says, smiling. "I mean... not that I'd wear any of them, myself," she adds with a chuckle, "but that's... something else altogether."

"You don't look like the eighties type," Angela says. "Anyhow, we'll have to come in and look."

Glancing down at her clothes for a moment, Shane chuckles. "I was thinking I don't look the dress type," she says, "but yeah, that too." She nods emphatically. "Yeah, absolutely. You guys should come and have a look, see if you can find anything. Have some coffee and pie or something," she says, smiling.

Angela smiles. "We'll totally do that."

"So, where were you before .... here?"

"Great," she says. "Uhh, me? West Hollywood. California." She quirks an eyebrow at Angela. "What about you?"

"Outside Pittsburgh," Angela says, a little wistfully. "I've never been to California."

"Oh," Shane says, eyebrows perking up a little in surprise. She smiles. "I -- I was born in Pittsburgh."

"Oh, wow," Angela says, smiling. "This is such a small world."

"I live in a suburb called Three Rivers. Do you still have family back there at all, or is everyone in California?"

Shane chuckles and nods. "Around here? Yeah, it definitely is," she says, still laughing. At the mention of her family, the laughter trails off and she quiets considerably. "No, I... I, umm... I don't know where my family is," she says uncomfortably after a moment, offering Angela a small, awkward smile.

It takes a second, but Angela gets it, and then she's kin of flustered for a second before she can speak.

"Oh! So ... you seem that you can take care of yourself, but still. No way is that easy."

"I've done it for a long time," Shane says with a good-natured shrug and a warm smile to let Angela know there's no hard feelings. "I'm used to it." She licks her lips and looks down for a moment, but is smiling as she looks back up at Angela. "So do you have family back in Pitts?" She asks, arching her eyebrow as she rests her elbows on the counter.

Angela nods and leans forward. "Loads," she says, pleased the awkward moment is over. "My parents, my sister -- she's 12 -- grandparents, aunts and uncles. I kind of got the whole package," she says, her voice trailing off.

"I think my CD is almost over, want to pick something out to play? I'm allowed to use anything in the used bins."

"You're really lucky," she says deliberately, a faint bit of wistfulness in her own voice, but also genuine happiness for her.

"Umm," Shane bites her bottom lip and worries it for a moment. "Sure. Uhh, you have any Killers in there?"

"I never realized how lucky I am until I got here," Angela says, quietly. "I was always too wrapped up in my own little drama at home."

She walks over to the K bin, flips through it slowly. "We have Hot Fuss."

"Well..." Shane muses for a moment. "They could always come out and visit you here. Or you could go home, maybe?"

"That's perfect," she says, smiling broadly. "Thank you."
