At the Church

It's time for Mass.

A week ago, for reasons which he can't quite pin down, the elderly priest has been off the alcohol. This morning, he's well presented, in clean clothes, standing up straight, and greeting the faithful in complete sentences, enunciated clearly.

The mass is conducted in English, and the celebrant's voice is crisp and clear. The sermon is a concise and closely-argued presentation upon the themes of repentence, forgiveness, and the cast-iron guarantee of redemption.

It's as if the priest has been Born Again.

There is just the slightest hesitation before the priest takes the wine ... and as he tastes it, an odd faraway look appearing in his good eye which was absent at the start of the service.

*Tony sits quietly in the back of the church, feels that the change in the priest may be temporary, but will enjoy it for the moment. He again leaves a wad of bills in the coffer and leaves mass feeling peaceful, not for having left enough money in the priests bowl to keep his household running for weeks at a time, but peaceful for having found some solace in the sermon today.*

As he had promised the Father the week before, Aziraphale slips into a pew at the back of the sanctuary just before mass begins.

Deb slips into the back pew, and doesn't pay much attention to the service, despite making all the right responses. Her thoughts are still on the missing boy and afterward she lights a candle to St. Anthony.

"You get him home safe or it's your sanctified butt," she whispers, moderating her language for church.

On the way home, she catches the pirate radio rebroadcast and smiles. Sometimes it just takes some celestial kicking.

Rogue slips into the back of the church. She doesn't pay attention to the mass, but prays silently instead, praying for strength and compassion and--screw it. She prays that she didn't make a mistake, and for the hurt to go the fuck away.

After a few moments, she stands, crosses herself, and leaves.

CJ walks in, pauses at the basin to adjust her scarf and to bless herself. She notices everyone seems to be sitting at the back of the church. She walks, purposefully, down the aisle. Before she slides into the front pew she kneels slightly and crosses herself while looking up at the large crucifix.

She slides into the pew and listens to the Father, who is amazingly coherant this week. When the service is over, she walks back down the aisle, smiling at all the parishoners...her Sunday family.
