Wednesday morning at the Emporium

Michael turned the sign from "closed" to "open," then swallowed a couple of asprin with his coffee as he walked back to the counter. He didn't know where this headache had come from, but he wanted it gone.

The delivery man had come by just before opening time. Michael had opened the wardrobe box and hung Paige's dress up behind the counter. It was beautiful, and she would be beautiful in it. He really hoped her boyfriend would be back in time for the dance.

The front window signs still read:

"Homecoming Special: free pack of condoms with purchase over $10."

"Now available, in case of unexpected 'guests': cricket bats and assorted ammunition."

*Paige comes in shortly after the shop opens, she doesn't look too good and is shaking a little*

*She notices the dress*

Wow is that it?

That's it. It's great, isn't it? *notices her look* Are you okay?

Yeah it really is, Geoff's gonna love it! *Paige nods* I'm just feeling a little faint

*pulls a chair over to Paige*

Here, have a seat. Can't have you falling over in the store now, can I?

*calls toward the back* Ben, get me a glass of water, would you?

You gonna be all right? Should I put a call in to the clinic?

*Paige sits down* Thanks Michael, be yeah I'll be fine, don't worry.

(ooc-she passes out in study hall some time after this)

Do you want to take the dress now, or come back for it later?

(ooc -- no problem. Michael's just a mother hen, just like his mom Deb. And horribly prone to overreacting. :P)

*Paige smiles and sips the water* I'll take it now, then I can hang it up back home before I go to the school. *she pulls out the last $200 and stands up*

*takes the money and carefully hands over the dress*

There you are. I hope Geoff likes it. And I expect to see pictures of you in it, you hear? *smiles*

Don't overexert yourself. Can't have you getting sick before Homecoming.

*Paige folds the dress over her arm careful not to let it trail on the floor*

I won't, and I really will eat something today *she thinks to herself*

*She looks over at the group that had just entered and lowers her voice* I'd keep an eye on them if I were you

*lowers voice* Yeah, I will. I've gotten used to Red and all sorts of odd things in this town, but them I don't like the look of.

*Paige nods* You should be ok, I think Spike just pissed them off. I'd better get going or I'll be late. See you soon

Roaring into town, the brothers head for the Emporium where they need to pick up some specific things. They have food and all the stuff necessary but now a project or two demands some specific things.

Armed with the list, Kadaj enters the store, Loz and Yazoo close behind him, their attention lingering over all the things the store has to offer.

*Eyes the newcomers a little suspiciously*

Can I help you find something?

Kadaj looked at the man and rolled his shoulders. "Looking for stuff," he said waving his list. "Some you'll have, some I doubt you will but we came here first."

Yazoo tapped Loz and pointed at the girl they keep running into (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomtownies/143221.html?thread=4448117#t4448117), which caused Loz to grin mischeviously.

*notices who they're looking at and gets a little defensive*

What we don't have we can usually get, depending on what that is, of course. And if it's paid for up front.

Yazoo picked up a can and looked at it, watching the, he guessed, store owner slyly, his gaze sliding down his body.

Walking to the man, Kadaj handed him his list, written in messy scrawl:

tape (really sticky)
wheel bearing grease
set of wrenches for small engines
carb tuner
brake bleeder
candles
pretty material
flower vase

Loz made no move toward the girl who looked like she wasn't feeling well at all. He sneered. Probably served her right.

*suppresses a shiver at the scrutiny*

*takes a look at the list and squints at the handwriting, then raises an eyebrow*

That's...an unusual mix of items. The last three we can definitely do. And the tape, and I think we've got wheel bearing grease in stock. The other items we'd need to order, but they'd probably come in in about a day or two.

Kadaj nodded, watching the other man closely. He didn't appear to be armed and he waved at Yazoo for him to stand down. "Payment upfront?"

Yeah. What I've got on hand on the list will cost you only about $15, but... *checks computer, turns monitor so Kadaj can see it* ...that's what the rest of it will cost.

(ooc -- no idea what this stuff would cost, so I'll leave that up to you)

Loz stepped forward and pulled out their money. He placed $15 on the counter with a slap for their stuff and another $150 for the tools on order and waited for their receipt.

"We can come back in a few days for that?" Kadaj waved at the screen.

*nods* *hands are shaking a little as he picks up the money*

I'll place the order now. It should be in on Friday.

*almost forgets what he's doing, then shakes it off and hands over receipt*

Already on his way out the door, "Friday," Kadaj repeated. His hand circled in the air in what might have been a wave and left the store to climb on his bike.

Yazoo put the can back and with a soft smile, he nodded to the store owner and turned to follow Kadaj out.

The only one left was Loz, who stared for a moment before taking the recepit and then he too, left the store and the three brothers kicked their bikes to life and pulled away.

I had nothing in particular planned; I'm just replenishing what I've already used. Why don't you join me in picking some basic goods that can last a while before use. You can always come back if you find that you need something in specific.

::finishes selecting a carton of a dozen eggs and heads towards the produce::

Of course, fresh fruit is just as good raw, so you can eat it before it has a chance to go bad.

Oh, Chiana, that vegetable you just picked up usually isn't very good by itself. ::sudden idea:: However, it's part of a reasonably simple recipe called "Eggplant Parmagiana" that quite good. Would you care to try that?

Well, this is one of the bare handful of recipes that I know by heart, so let's see... ::ticks off list on claws::

Eggplant, of course, you should probably get 2 of that size, a half-dozen eggs, mozzarella cheese, romano cheese, some basil for flavor, and some flour. Oh, I almost forgot the tomato sauce. It's usually best to make it yourself, but that's probably a bad idea for someone new to the style of cuisine.

Now, Slartibartfast has flour in the kitchen, but it's not a bad idea to have some on hand, just in case. ::grin:: And it's useful for certain mischief.

If I'd had any idea the town was going to get attacked by fucking zombies, I would have had them in stock. That'll be $40. *nods to sign* We've got a Homecoming bonus gift, if you're interested.

We'd like to be prepared for whatever may come at the town next -- that is, if it's possible to anticipate anything in this town -- so if you have any suggestions beyond the cricket bats and ammunition, let me know.

You might want to invest in washcloths and wetnaps. We had a mime invade campus and town. It's important to have the tools to defend yourself from that kind of menace.

*shudders at the thought of mimes*

*tries to imagine what other such horrors might invade the town, and shudders again*
