Phale's Bookshop - Open for Business
Marty opens the door and finds that the store has been mysteriously tidied up and that instead of tea and cookies, there's Tim Horton's Coffee and muffins available by the overstuffed chairs.
Marty sits down and starts going through the inventory records looking for something in particular.

Carefully nudging the door open, she takes a couple of hesitant steps inside as she looks around. The door was unlocked and Mr. Phale had mentioned she could come in whenever she liked, but she still felt strange accepting the offer, no matter how generous.
"M-Mr. Phale?" Shane asks quietly.
no subject
"Shane! Hi. Phale had to go 'out of town' for a bit and is having me look after the store while he's gone. Can I help you find something?"

Marty goes behind a stack of books, but can hear everything Shane might say to him.

"That's right. I think Angela mentioned you were coming on board in the next enrollment. Are you planning on staying in town or moving to the dorms?"

"I just... I like it. I've ... I've never had a room of my own, so..." Shane is suddenly fascinated by the coffee filling her mug.

"Living on campus is fun. I have a single myself, which was easy enough to ask for. If you don't want to be stuck with a roommate all you have to do is ask really. Plus there's always something going on there and as long as you don't annoy the squid in the basement it's reasonably safe."
no subject
"... umm... squid?" She asks, brows knitting together. Yeah, probably just not enough coffee. "Th-there's a squid in the basement?"

Taking a deep breath, she takes a sip of her coffee. "CJ's cool. I mean, I haven't had her as a teacher yet, but as a friend she's... great. She used to work for the president, so... she kinda knows how to do the whole public speaking gig, you know?"
no subject
"Yeah. She and that Doctor guy seem to be hitting it off pretty well. I knew she worked for the President but you know it was just a student council debate. Still... I guess I know where she was coming from."
no subject
"Is that why you're here?" She asks very quietly after a moment, head tipping to one side just slightly as she looks at him.
no subject
"I... uh... Did some things I'm not proud of. I actually came here under false pretenses in order to... do a job. But I'm not doing that anymore."

Pulling the stir stick from her mouth, she takes a sip of her coffee, seeming to gather her thoughts. "You know, I think that... a lot of us... came here because we were running from something," she murmurs, her tone pensive.
no subject
"Why are you here Shane?" he says quietly.

"You really think that? That you're a mistake? Because I could tell that a lot of people at your party the other night think differently. I know I do."
Marty puts the two textbooks in a bag for Shane.
"When school started Connor gave this speech I barely listened to. Something about amnesty and putting your past behind you. I didn't put a whole lot of stock in it. Know what I mean? Kind of wish I listend better because it's helped me. I hope you make enrollment Shane because I'm betting it'll help you. But helping... yeah. Helping is always good."

Shane nods, lowering her eyes to look at the counter. "Did you... do it because you had to?" She asks after a moment, glancing up at him furtively.
Marty looks away.
"I did..."
Marty shakes his head.
"That's really not an easy question for me. Has Angela told you anyting about my past?"

"Shane... what I did wasn't because I had to. What I did was criminal to use the mildest term available. I did it for money and I did it without respect for human life. But that's not how I am any more. If it wasn't for Angela..."
Marty smiles.
"Let's put it this way. Some people say forgive and forget? I believe more in forgiving and just accepting. Know what I mean?"

"I know the feeling. It's hard to find people to trust. But if you need someone to talk to... give me a call."
