Phale's Bookshop - Open for Business

Marty opens the door and finds that the store has been mysteriously tidied up and that instead of tea and cookies, there's Tim Horton's Coffee and muffins available by the overstuffed chairs.

Marty sits down and starts going through the inventory records looking for something in particular.

((How on god's green earth did Tim Horton's get there?))

[OOC: *demonstrates the secret Tim Horton's handshake* Mmm. Tim Horton's.]

Shane knew that Geoff had promised to give her a hand with getting prepared for starting up at school, but since Geoff was - for the time being, anyway - gone, and she was still feeling rather uncertain about school on the whole, Shane thought it might be a good idea to visit Mr. Phale instead and see if he had any books that she might be able to borrow.

Carefully nudging the door open, she takes a couple of hesitant steps inside as she looks around. The door was unlocked and Mr. Phale had mentioned she could come in whenever she liked, but she still felt strange accepting the offer, no matter how generous.

"M-Mr. Phale?" Shane asks quietly.

Eyes landing on Marty, Shane's brows bob up just a little. "Oh," she says, a sudden, surprised smile on her face as she sees him. "Marty. Hey. Uhh... yeah, I was... I-I was looking for some books on quantum physics? Mr. Phale said I could come in and read any books I wanted but..." She trails off for a moment as she looks at the packed shelves and gives a slight shake of her head, a faint, almost overwhelmed look on her face. "I have no idea what I'd even be looking for."

Chuckling, Shane shakes her hair out of her eyes as she moves over to the coffee pot and pours herself a cup. "Thank you. Not for pleasure, exactly," she murmurs, amusement still evident in her voice. "Um, Doc said he thought I could do it and that he'd like me in his class, so..." she shrugs a little as she takes a sip of her coffee.

"I don't know," Shane says thoughtfully. "On one hand, it'd be cool to be around everyone that I'm going to school with, but... on the other... Deirdre's place has got a pool." She thinks about it for a moment longer and realizes that doesn't sound like much of an excuse - she looks up at him and grins a little sheepisly.

"I just... I like it. I've ... I've never had a room of my own, so..." Shane is suddenly fascinated by the coffee filling her mug.

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-06 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Shane looks up from her mug, giving Marty a vaguely bleary look. Maybe she hasn't had enough coffee, yet, today, but she thought she could have sworn she heard...

"... umm... squid?" She asks, brows knitting together. Yeah, probably just not enough coffee. "Th-there's a squid in the basement?"

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-06 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Y-yeah, Rory... Rory mentioned the gremlins, but... nobody ever mentioned a squid, no," Shane says deliberately as she chuckles, taking a sip from her mug. She spots a small cannister of plastic stir sticks by the coffee pot and takes one, tucking it into the corner of her mouth, chewing on it. "I think Amber House has stables," she offers up brightly, but then loses a bit of steam. "Not that I can ride, but... I'll go with something unrideable over a tentacle monster any day."

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-06 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know." Shane pauses for a moment, worrying thoughtfully for a moment on the end of her stir stick. "CJ wants me to take speech? I... I don't know, though, I'm not... really good with that." She switches the stir stick from one corner of her mouth to the other. "Maybe... the magic class? I mean, I'm not -- I'm not like Paige or anything, but ... it might come in handy around here, y'know?"

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-06 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't like guns," she says, shaking her head. "Or violence. I'd -- I'd rather hit something that shoot something, though. With guns, it's too easy. It's just too easy... to hurt someone, kill someone, and not mean to... and all it takes is a little chunk of metal and a working finger." Shane licks her lips and looks down, still shaking her head, shards of dark hair falling in her face. "I'm not here to hurt people."

Taking a deep breath, she takes a sip of her coffee. "CJ's cool. I mean, I haven't had her as a teacher yet, but as a friend she's... great. She used to work for the president, so... she kinda knows how to do the whole public speaking gig, you know?"

Shane's faded green eyes calmly note the changes in Marty's expression and his body language. The slightest crease appears between her brows. She looks down for a moment, slender fingers adjusting their grip carefully on her mug, before she looks up at him again.

"Is that why you're here?" She asks very quietly after a moment, head tipping to one side just slightly as she looks at him.

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-06 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Shane nods and it's obvious she comprehends what he's just said but, impossibly enough, considering what he's just told her, there's also a great deal of sadness, as well. For him. But also acceptance, because she'd been there, herself. "Good for you," she says softly.

Pulling the stir stick from her mouth, she takes a sip of her coffee, seeming to gather her thoughts. "You know, I think that... a lot of us... came here because we were running from something," she murmurs, her tone pensive.

Looking away for a moment, the corner of Shane's mouth twists slightly as she thinks about it. She swallows and clears her throat carefully before she speaks. "To help," she says, voice husky in her throat. "Because when I help... when I... give to other people, it... makes me feel like less of a mistake than I know I am."

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-06 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Shane nods. "It's hard... isn't it?" She asks, eyes narrowing slightly as she looks at him. "Putting it -- putting it behind you."

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Shane nods, lowering her eyes to look at the counter. "Did you... do it because you had to?" She asks after a moment, glancing up at him furtively.

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Shane shakes her head, lips pressed into a pensive line, though her eyes never stop watching Marty. "No," she says after a moment. "No, she hasn't."

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's very obvious that something that Marty has said has struck a chord with her. Shane's brows furrow just slightly and she nods. "Yeah," she says softly. "I ... I know exactly what you mean."

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Shane's expression is pained, but at the same time, impossibly vulnerable. "I'm trying," she whispers, nodding. "It's just, I'm not... I'm not -- used to that. I'm not used to people wanting to help. I don't know how to deal with it."

[identity profile] shane-mcc.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Taking a deep breath, she lets it out and nods, offering him a smile but genuine smile. "You, too," she says, though her tone remains serious.
