Shane slips into the diner, the usual take-out cup in her hands. "Hey, Deb," she says, setting her cup on an unoccupied table for a moment so that she can slip out of her denim jacket, revealing a long-sleeved gray Henley shirt. She hangs up her coat, picks up her cup and heads over to the counter. "What's going on?"

"Not much. How about you? Been a real quiet day today."

"Same here," she says with an easy shrug, smiling as she scoots behind the counter and stashes her things in the drawer.

Maia comes in and looks around, she is looking a little better then the day before but not much. She does not see Tara so she sits down at a table.

With her pad and pen in hand, Shane approaches the table. "Hey, Maia," she says, smiling. "What can I get for you?"

Maia smiles slightly back at her. "Um for now just some ice water. I'm waiting for Professor Maclay- uh Tara. Sorry waiting for Tara."

"Oh... sure, no problem," Shane nods and tucks her ticket pad into her back pocket as she heads over to get Maia's drink.

Tara walks in and smiles when she sees Maia. "You're looking more cheerful than the last time I saw you!"

"Hi" Maia gives a small smile "I did that thing today, pulled a lot of it out actually" Maia looks down "I pulled it out to the point I wanted to die actually." Maia looks ashamed now.

Tara frowns. "I'm proud of you for dealing with the pain, Maia, but don't push it. The whole point of this is to put you in control of the pain, instead of it controlling you."

Maia nods and watches Shane walk away. She pulls out a sugar packet and starts fiddling with it, looking up everytime the bell rings over the door.

Returning a few moments later with a glass of ice water, Shane smiles as she sees the new arrival. "I guess you're Tara," she says to her amiably, placing Maia's glass on the table to one side for her, along with a straw. She pulls out her pad and pen. "So what can I get for you guys?"

"I'll have the Pasta Puttenesca with the salad please." Maia puts the sugar package back and smiles at Shane.

Alanna comes in and glances hungrily at the board. "The pasta, spaghettie, fudge cake, and if you have coffee I will worship this diner forever." She pauses for a moment. "Actually, I already do."

"We've got coffee," Shane says, chuckling as she takes down Alanna's order. "You want the coffee to-go with the rest?"

"Yes please. Coffee is life."

"You got it," Shane says, still chuckling as she puts in Alanna's order. She grabs a styrofoam cup from a stack by the coffee maker, fills it and places a lid on it, then sets it up on the counter so that Alanna can have it while she's waiting. She rings up her order at the register. "That will be... $14.90 altogether," she says, fingers pressing rather determinedly at the keys. Stupid register.

Alanna hands over the money and makes a note to exchange some more. "So, weren't you planning on transferring as a student here?"

"Yeah... planning on it," Shane says with a wry smile as she glances up from the register. The change drawer pops open and all but punches her in the stomach as it does so. "Whenever they decide to open enrollment."

Tara gets up to pay her bill, kicking herself for the nervous tension in her stomach at the thought of talking to Shane again.

Shane is seated behind the counter on a stool close to the register, keeping her hands busy by wrapping silverware. As she sees Tara stand up, she finishes the set she's working on and places it in the tray along with the rest, a small smile on her face.

Shaking her hair out of her eyes, Shane nods. "Don't worry about it," she says sincerely, her expression sober, faded green eyes reassuring. "I'm sorry if I freaked you out... or - or made it worse... I didn't mean to."

"No!" Tara protested, a little too loudly. She repeated it again, softly this time. "No, I really appreciated it. I freaked out, and you... you were... kind." She laughs, self-pityingly. "Silly, really, to get upset like that."

"Yeah, but people do," Shane says with a slight shrug, smiling. "It's like Deb said the first night I broke a dish: welcome to the restaurant biz." She looks at Tara steadily until she can meet her eyes and look into them. "It's all right."
