Rare Books Shop, Tuesday

The door to the rare books shop is open. Anyone walking past may spy Azirphale tidying up the store. They may also hear humming.

EDITED: The door is now closed, and passers-by who peep in the window will see Aziraphale sitting in his armchair, smiling cheerily and talking on an antique telephone.

EDITED 2: The door is still closed but unlocked. Looking in the window, one can see Aziraphale sitting in his armchair, staring off into space.

Paige walks in, she's done a deal with Evil!Paige that she could go out as long as she doesn't try to see Geoff

"Mr Phale I need books." she hands over the book list for Geoff's class

Aziraphale stops humming and looks up from where he's dusting out one of the bookcases. "Of course, my dear." He takes the list, giving Paige an odd look as he does. "Sit down and have some tea, if you like, Miss Matthews."

Paige smiles weakly and goes to sit down, "thank you, sir. I'm sorry I haven't been, you were away when I most needed to speak to you, but it doesn't seem so important now."

She listens in her head to make sure Evil!Paige isn't there, it seems quiet enough

Aziraphale looks sharply over at Paige. "I'm sorry, my dear. But I'm here now, if you'd like to talk."

He can tell something is...odd. Wrong. But he can't yet quite figure out what it is.

"I found out a was part Angel just before you left, but I'm not sure what that means quite, you-you're an Angel aren't you Mr Phale, or I getting confused?" she sighs, she'd not even had chance to tell him, not that it would change things

Aziraphale starts and looks over from where he was searching his bookcases. "Er, what gives you that idea, my dear?"

Paige bites her lip, she's obviously just said something wrong.

"I thought I saw you when the zombies first attacked, I guess it was someone else. I'm sorry."

Aziraphale nods emphatically, perhaps overdoing it a bit. "I'm sure it was someone else, my dear. Perhaps young Mr. Chihaya."

He walks over, carrying a stack of books, and sets them down on the little table next to the vase of dead roses.

Paige looks down, "Oh I'm sorry, forget what I said then."

She looks at the books, Geoff exoects us to read all these, maybe hehas been biten a gremlin!

"wow these look pretty long, you don't know where I could get hold of study notes as well do you?"

Paige sighs, she knows she's gonna fail this course, her only hope in passing had been when she was with Geoff

Shaking his head, Aziraphale says, "I'm sorry, I can't help you there. My stock is almost entirely in rare editions. You might want to look through the books to make certain they're what you want before you buy them. I'm sure the nice young man over at Black Books could help you, though." He gives Paige a knowing smile.

Paige smiles, "yeah I'm sure Manny can help me out there, but erm..." Paige knows just saying his name might alert Evil!Paige, but she knows she needs the books

"they don't have any Chaucer at Black Books, so I should at least buy that, please."

"Of course, my dear." He hands her a leather bound book. "This is a very nice edition. It's illuminated," he adds proudly.

"Are you sure you wouldn't like some tea?"

Paige smiles taking the book, "no I'm fine thank you, w-when you say illuminated, it doesn't have pictures of..." she looks down pushing Evil!Paige away "the author does it?"

"No, I don't believe so. Did you want one with pictures of the author? I'm certain I can find one for you." He heads back off to the bookcase to have a look.

Paige calls after Mr Phale, Evil!Paige is coming she can feel it, she has to show him, angel or not.

"Yes please, if you have some of his early works, I'd like to see them." She forces a smile.

[ooc: There are several people working on ideas about what to do about Paige, so you might not want to do anything rash. If Evil!Paige is something that can be equated with a possessing entity, Aziraphale will jerk her out so fast she won't know what hit her. If it's more of a split-personality issue, Paige is likely to wind up unconscious in the clinic. I just wanted to give you fair warning. :)]

Aziraphale pulls several more books from one of the shelves and hands them to Paige. "As you requested early works, I assumed you weren't interested in the unfinished set of tales. You might try his translation of The Romaunt of the Rose. It's quite good. And I believe there's a wood-cut of the author on the title page."

Paige takes a deep breath as she opens the book. She doesn't look at it for a few moments but reaches for her purse instead,getting out some money.

"Thank you Mr Phale, how much do I owe you?" her voice wavers, this is either going to work or get her killed

A bit taken aback that she may be expressing her intent to purchase all of his books by Chaucer, Aziraphale clears his throat nervously. "Er, just for the one, Miss Matthews?"

Paige bites her lip and starts to take more deep breaths, "No for all of them." her voice is low and soft

Starting to feel a bit panicked, Aziraphale blinks at Paige and frowns very slightly. "Surely, my dear, you don't want to buy them all. They're quite expensive, you know. Rare editions. One of them is even signed."

She looks up at him, "how much would they be? I just got some money through from my parents will. I'd like to have them" for old times sake

Still frowning, Aziraphale tallies the cost on his cash register. The total comes to six hundred pounds and change. Satisfied that Paige will balk at paying so much, he says, "It's quite a lot of money, Miss Matthews. Perhaps you'd prefer to just take one or two."

Paige takes a deep breath, "can you save the others? I don't that much right now, but I-I'd like to have them at some point. I'll just take the ones you suggest in the mean time, how much will they be?" she asks forcing a smile

Relieved at having dodged the loss of so many of his precious books, Aziraphale smiles at Paige. "Why don't you take The Romaunt of the Rose -- that's a small volume -- and The Book of the Duchess?" He rings up the total and puts the others back on the shelf.

"Did you find the picture?"

Paige has only just plucked up the courage to open the book, she only catches a glimpse of the picture before Evil!Paige pushes forwards, her eyes darken and her whole manner changes

"so that's him is it? I don't know what all the fuss is about, he's not even that cute!" she laughs and hands over the money

Giving Paige an odd look, Aziraphale says, "Well, I should imagine the image was made when he was rather advanced into his middle years."

He accepts the payment and looks at Paige. "Are you all right, my dear?"

Evil!Paige is already stuffing the books into their bag, she looks up at him

"Never better."

Paige is now crying inside her own head, he can't see her, he can't see th evil

Aziraphale reaches out and takes hold of Paige's wrist.

Evil!Paige pulls her arm away quickly, she doesn't stop to ask questions, she orbs straight back to school, something was very wrong there, we'd been lying to them before, he was an angel she was sure of it.

((I'd say it's some part of Paige's personality that came out to protect her when Geoff broke her heart, but that implies Paige could do some of these things which she couldn't so it's a bit complicated. She has to stay evil for a while longer though))

Azirphale jumps, startled, and stares at the spot where the young woman had been standing.

"This can't be good," he mutters to himself.

[Give me a heads-up when you work out the complexities -- I think Phale's going to be involved in the intervention, unless something else happens first.]

((I will various people know about Evil!Paige so something should happen to be honest though I think Geoff might just make Paige strong enough to get rid of Evil!Paige without intervention))
