Saturday Afternoon

Logan throws on a pair of khaki pants and a sweater, along with the usual cologne, getting ready for his date with Allie. They had plans to check out the new mini-golf place in town.

Allie walks into the living room, dressed casually in tight jeans and a red sweater.

"So, I have a confession to make," she says, biting her lip.

"You've decided to run off with the butler? I knew he was too good-looking to have around the house..."

Allie giggles for a moment, but looks concerned again.

"I've never played mini-golf," she confesses.

They reached the mini-golf place and Logan took out his wallet to pay for two rounds. He took the clubs from the attendant and turned to Allie. "What color ball?"

"Yellow, I guess," she says, hoping she won't make a fool of herself.

"Good, I always had to fight with my sister over who got the blue one." Logan picked up a blue ball for himself and handed a yellow one to Allie. "And here," he says, handing her a score card and tiny red pencil from the bin on the counter. "You get the distinguished honor of keeping score."

Putting green

Logan starts walking to the left course. "Good choice. Now, let's practice on the putting green for a bit first." He drops his golf ball onto the green, lines up the shot, and procedes to get a hole-in-one on his first attempt.

Allie watches and golf claps for Logan when he gets his hole-in-one.

She attemps to copy his actions, but holds the club totally wrong and ends up sending the ball backwards.

Logan does not laugh... much.

"Here," he says, retrieving her ball from the sidewalk. "Let me hold the score card - you'll need both hands free for this to work the way you want it to." Logan stands facing her, and uses his hands to place her hands in the right club hold. "Now, the hole is that way, and you want your club head to be at a 90-degree angle with the hole. Swing straight back about 'this much', and tap the ball lightly."

Logan walks up to Hole One and looks at the score card. "It's a par 3," he says, "which means the average person can get the ball in the hole in three strokes." He looks at the course. It is L-shaped with three flower baskets placed in various points of obstruction. "The idea on this one is to hit it through the middle of those two pots, and have the ball bounce off of the corner board in the back. Would you like to go first, or should I?"

Allie studies the course and wonders how exactly this whole thing is supposed to work.

"Why don't you," she says.

"Gladly," he says, handing her the score card and placing his ball on the mat. He swings confidently and his ball rolls in a fairly straight line, bouncing off of the corner board and hitting the third flower basket, near the hole. "Straight line - that's your goal. If you get stuck by one of those first two baskets, you'll waste a few extra strokes trying to get around."

2nd Hole

When they get to the second hole, Allie looks at it curiously.

It's got three wooden planks at angles about two feet apart up to the green. She turns to Logan.

"How are you supposed to get around those?"

"Well that is the question, isn't it," he says without offering any assistance.

Allie pouts at him, but decides to wing it.

She studies the layout of the hole for a few moments, then places her ball on the mat and gives it a good whack. The ball bounces off the plank on the right, careens directly into the plank on the left, and hits the third plank, also on the right, which then propels it to a few feet from the hole.

"I guess I didn't need your help," she smirks.

Hole 3

"Okay, we're tied," Logan says walking to Hole 3, so I'll go first this time. A par 3 again, Hole 3 had two levels - there were two holes on the upper level, both leading to the lower level but different spots.

He places his ball on the mat and putts it into the nearest upper level hole. It lands as far as it could possibly be from the lower level hole.

Allie looks at the hole, but is confused.

"Which hole do I aim for?"

4th Hole

Allie giggles as they walk to the next hole.

"I'm fairly certain I've never played," she says. "I must just be a natural," she teases.

"Oh! A water fountain!" she says when she gets a good look at the hole. It's got a fountain directly in the middle and you have to hit the ball around it - but the hole is directly behind the fountain.

She lines up her shot and her ball goes to the left of the fountain, landing just shy of the green.

Logan lines up his shot and banks it off the side wall, sending his ball within inches of the hole.

"Oh, and it's a little like playing pool also, you can use objects and boundaries to line up angles - geometry is everywhere."

5th Hole

"Aw, crud," Logan says, looking at the 5th hole. There were little hills everywhere on the green. "It's a Par 3, but I hate these holes because it's really more about luck than skill - there's no way to control where the ball will roll off of the hills.

He putts and the ball rolls over a few hills, ending nowhere near the whole.

"They look like moguls on a ski slope," she says.

She whacks her ball and it flies all over the place, smacks off the back board and ends up halfway back down the fairway.

18th Hole

After what seems like hours, they finally make it to the last hole.

"A Windmill!!!" Allie exclaims. "How adorable!"

Allie has gotten the hang of the whole mini-golf thing by now, but Logan is still beating her by two strokes and that is so not as dirty as it sounds.

It's her turn to go first, so she puts her ball down and tries to get a sense of the windmill's timing. If she can get her ball through in a straight line, she can get a hole-in-one.

And, she does it!!

She jumps up and down and impulisively kisses Logan. "I got a hole-in-one!"

"Congratulations, Ace. Or should I call you 'Sport' now?" He grins and kisses her again, this time lingering a bit longer.

Logan putts, but his timing is off, and his ball smacks the windmill blade and rolls almost all of the way back. The second putt goes exactly as planned and Logan finishes one stroke ahead of Allie. "Close game," he says. "We'll have to do it again sometime, for sure."

As they walk home hand in hand, Allie remembers something she wanted to mention to Logan.

"Hey, there's a girl at our school who's having a Halloween party next Sunday. Do you want to go?"
