Red's Tattoo: Open Tats/Henna
Having turned in her Journalism assignment early, Duce heads in to work to open for Red. Flipping on the neon, the sign hums for a moment before flickering to life and proclaiming the shop 'Open'. The lights are switched on, illuminating the studio in a ruthless halogen glare.
Walking around the corner to get her henna kit, she stops abruptly and peers down at two very limp and sleeping babies. From the looks of it, they'd attempted to hide around the corner, presumably to pounce her when she came in, but couldn't keep awake at such an early hour. Duce grinned at them, sidestepping neatly to get to the fridge. Once the henna was set on the counter to warm and reach dye-break, she dropped to the floor, folding her legs indian style and began to gently pet the cubs.
Red trotted through long enough to wave a tail at Duce and dig around behind the counter. "I'll be checking in from time to time today, Duce for appointments otherwise, I'm out in town today, visiting the new businesses and making sure the flyers get mailed to the business owners about the Town Meeting."
Duce nodded, making a 'Silence!' gesture of a finger across her mouth and waving a hand at the sleeping mugwumps.
She whispered, "Your calendar's clear so far, although it looks like you have a potential touch-up job later this afternoon."
He rolled his eye. "They should be tired," he whispered, "they were up all night. Up and down the stairs. whumpwhumpwhumpwhumpwhump." Red rocked his head back and forth. "whumpwhumpwhumpwhumpwhump. I'm going to have to start closing the flat door at the top again if I'm going to get any sleep at all."
"Could be worse," Duce murmurred, "They could be teenagers and sneaking out of the house at night." She gives the small red bundles a fond pat, smiling as one of them burrowed a sleepy nose under his brother. "You've been busy lately. Want us to conscript Oz into taking them for a run tonight or tomorrow?"
"That would be a big help. I still have to visit the new businesses and get more..." he almost disappered under the counter before he pulled back out again, "flyers distributed. Then I have to work on the agenda for the meeting." Red looked at her and sat down. "The upside to all this is I think I'm caught up with the exception of a few last more complicated applications."
Nodding, Duce offered, "Anything we can do to help? We probably won't be able to make the meeting.. we have a big Journalism project due by the end of the week. We saw the bulletin yesterday that new businesses were open this week. That should be fun."
"Just helping me keep the shop open until things settle," Red butted against her cheek gently. "That's a huge help right there."
Gently tugging one of his ears, Duce grins, "That's what you pay us for. 'Sall good. Have fun distributing fliers."
Red grinned and closed his eye to enjoy the tugging for a moment before he picked up the flyers he had pulled out and trotted off again.
Aayla walks in, passing Red on his way out. She looks around the area before spotting Duce petting two adorable cubs that are spitting images of Red.
Approaching the peaceful trio as quietly as possible, she politely asks for assistance.
At the chime of the door, Duce looks up to greet the newcomer. Her snakes move about her head lazily, still not terribly active or awake. Her body unfolds silently, rising to a standing position and she leans against the counter with a small wince as prickling informs her she was sitting on her feet too long.
Examining the blue woman with frank and honest curiousity, she inquires "Hi. What can we help you with?"
Aayla smiles kindly, unable to avoid trying to interpret Duce's snakes as she does Twi'lek lekku. [ooc: Twi'leks can communicate through movement of their head-tails]
She gently pulls out a blue crystal, pulsating with beautiful Force energy to those attuned.
"I read that you also specialize in jewelry. Would it be possible to make a necklace or pendant out of this crystal?"
The movement of the snakes apparently translates into 'Damn the body. Why does it have to be awake at such an unreasonable hour?' 'It hates us. Perhaps we should bite it?' 'That would require effort. Also? Venom. You go ahead and waste yours, we're saving ours.' 'Picky, picky.' 'Shut up, you three, we're trying to relax back here.' 'Bite me. No, not literally! Quit that, it tickles!' 'I hate you all.' One would presume they're talking amongst themselves, although they do give the blue woman's .. hair.. appreciative glances.
Duce, being from a timeline where The Force isn't heard of and having her sole experience with Jedi be Anakin's amazing banthabell rendition of Little Bunny Foo Foo (*sullenly*), apparently doesn't notice the pulsating blue light. Examining the jewel without reaching for it, she nods tentatively.
"Shouldn't be too hard. Red is the jewelry artist, but he's out for the morning. Were you thinking of doing a wire wrap, a clawcap, or drilling a hole for a pendant?" Giving the jewel a nod, she comments, "Seems a shame to drill a rock that pretty."
Aayla shifts uncomfortably at the thought of scarring her lightsaber crystal and shakes her head firmly.
"I will not allow any harm to come to this crystal. Some sort of wrap or cap would do, as long as the crystal stays safely in tact. It's very special to me." Hesitating slightly, she ads, "Would it also be possible to have it removable?" She wasn't about to give up her lightsaber crystal for a permanent necklace, no matter what Frank wanted.
Duce looks slightly relieved as the blue woman decides against drilling. Really, it is a very pretty rock.
She considers the problem for a moment, asking, "Do you want the jewel to be visable at all? If not, you could probably make some sort of encapsulated pendant, like an overly large locket. Then, if you wanted to take it out, you could pop the catch and pour it into your hand. Creating containment that leaves it visible might be more tricky, but maybe some sort of wire cage with a clasp?"
She shakes her head slightly, "Red would really be the person you'd want to talk to about it. He's good at coming up with abstract jewelry, and he has more experience with various types of latching mechanisms."
Aayla nods appreciatively, giving a smile. "Thank you for all of your help, ma'am. When do you think Mr. Red would be available? I understand he's very busy." She carefully replaces the crystal into an inconspicuous pocket.
Glancing at his calendar, she checks. "Looks like he's out all morning distributing flyers about the town meeting. He should be back later this afternoon, around 3pm. If you have a description of what kind of necklace enclosure you were thinking of, or a sketch, you're welcome to leave it for him to take a look at."
Aayla pleasantly smiles. "That will be very good. I will try to return then. You were an immense help, Miss..." she pauses, waiting for Duce's name.
Offering the blue woman a grin, Duce introduces herself, "Medusa St. Clair. Most people call us Duce. Can we give Red your name so he know who to look for?"
.. cuz just stating 'the blue woman with tentacles on her head' wouldn't be enough of a description. Apparently, her tact-mode is set to 'on' this morning.
"Wonderful to meet you, Miss St. Clair. My name is Aayla Secura. Perhaps we may meet later, since we possibly have a bit in common." Her lekku move slightly. "I work at the new hotel, Afficionado Arms." Bowing in departure, she turns to leave.
However, before she reaches the door, she remembers something. Since Duce was such a big help, she decides to inquire. Turning gracefully, she asks, "Is there a place in town that I may find a suit?"
Duce nods, "Likewise, Ms. Secura. We're usually around after work, around 5pm. If you'd like to take one of the henna cards, our phone number and email are on there, and we can be reached that way."
Tilting her head slightly at the question, Duce considers it for a moment before responding, "A suit? Like a business suit, or casual clothing? Deb's Diner in town has a retro boutique attached, but if you want something fancier, you could try the mall.. Or maybe the Emporium? They have just about everything. If that's no good, the new business directory might list a decent haberdashery; we haven't had time to check out all the new businesses."
Aayla takes the small business card, placing it in a small pouch attatched to her belt.
"I believe Mr. Donovan would like some sort of business suit, though I'm not entirely sure of what that entails. As long as it pleases him and is not restrictive of my movement, that's all I'm looking for." She listens attentively to Duce's advice. "I shall most certainly look into the places you suggested."
Bowing once again, she smiles, gives a polite farewell, and thanks Duce before leaving the shop.
More than a little nervous, Angela walks into the shop holding her gift certificate from journalism class.
She still isn't convinced she'll really go through with it.
Duce looks up from the counter, nudging the sleeping babies with a toe. "Hey Angela. How goes it?"
"Not too bad, I guess," Angela says. "I'm, like, trying to decide if getting the tattoo for Jerusalem's class would be kind of cool, or if I should stick to henna. What do you think?"
Duce shakes her head, "Sooo glad we didn't get that reward. Well, if you like the thought of a spider inked into your skin for the rest of your life, by all means, go with the tattoo. If you want something less.. insectile, though we believe the restrictions are that it has to be obviously within sight, go with henna. Some of the henna designs are pretty, and mostly they're done on women's hands, which is about as obvious as you can get."
Angela chews on her lip. "See, when I got the certificate, I was kind of thinking I'd go for the tattoo, even if it is a bug. You know, show on the outside how much this school has changed me, all of that. But now things have changed and -- I'm just not sure I want to make that statement anymore."
"If I got the henna, how long would it last for? It would kind of freak my mom out if it was still there this weekend. I'm not sure whether I like that, or whether it's just, like, completely not worth it."
Duce answers honestly, "Henna's a resin. It sinks into your skin and stains it, and tends to last a minimum of a week and a maximum of 10 weeks, and you never really know how long it'll last until you test it. Did Spider say you had to get it this week? We'd suggest, if you're worried about your mom's reaction, waiting until after Parent's Weekend to do it."
"I'm not sure," Angela says, inspecting the certificate for an expiration date and not finding one. "Actually, I guess I should just wait until after parents' weekend. Mom will freak out enough about this place, might as well not add another layer."
She flashes a smile. "See you later, Duce."
Duce nods, "Smart thing to do. See you later!"
