"Hi honey, We're deader than a doornail tonight. All the kids are at the beach party. I had a few take-outs, but loos like a quiet night. if it was tomorrow, I'd close early for the town meeting. You gonna be there?"

She sets the coffee mug down in front of him with an exasperated look. "You ever have one of those days when you're a day ahead all day long? I've been thinking it was Wednesday all day. Good thing Carl writes the board."

She brings him the usual chicken with steamed vegetables and warms up the decaf.

Deb's jaw drops as she processes the offer. "Oh, honey, we couldn't... What am I saying? We'd love it. Thank you so much!" She very nearly hugs him.

"I'm sorry about the cook. If it weren't my own place, I'd be offering in a heartbeat. But you know, I'm not a fancy sort, just an Italian mama who likes the kitchen."

"We'll wait until after Halloween. How about Tuesday before Thanksgiving? I was going to take that off so we could brace for the holiday. I'm doing a big spread. I think a lot of these kids don't have someplace to go over the holiday."

You wanna host it at the hotel? I got a dining room that seats about 150... whole school should fit. You dont need to shut down the diner, just... run my kitchen for the day...

Ive got 6 ovens... and by then, a fully stocked staff, hopefully? But you'd be in charge.

Deb sinks into a chair, her hands over her mouth and her eyes wide.

"Yes," she squeaks in a voice not even Michael would recognize. "Yes, that would be perfect."

Ill let the kitchen staff know as soon as possible, and all I need from you is grocery list.

"I will. Thank you." Not trusting herself to say more, Deb wanders into the kitchen in a half daze, delegating the tables to the new little townie waitress.

Anyone looking in on her would find tears and a look of an impossible dream come true on her face.

Before heading down to the beach, D'anna ducks into Deb's and walks up to the counter.

"Hi, honey, what'll be for you tonight?

"Hi," D'anna smiles. "I see you don't have any cookies tonight, but can I get about a dozen of those?" She points to the gingerbread squares because she's not sure what they are, but they look close enough to cookies that she doesn't think Scooter will mind too much that they aren't.

Deb boxes up 13 gingerbread squares. "$6, honey. You need any lemon sauce or whipped cream for them?"

A little bewildered, "Both? I'm not sure. What do they usually come with?"

"Some folks eat them plain. Some like the lemon. Some like whipped cream. It's all a matter of taste. I like whipped cream."

Deb slips containers of lemon sauce and whipped cream into the bag with the gingerbread. "Enjoy, honey."

"Thank you," D'anna smiled more widely and paid for her purchase. She then took the parcel and headed back up to the school.

Callisto wanders into the diner in the early evening.

"Thanks" There is a slight air of mischief about Callisto as she continues, "Actually I need make a sizable takeout order, some friends and I are having something of a party tonight, and I volunteered to get the food."

"It's been slow so we have plenty. What can I get you?"

"A selection of whatever's on the menu tonight will be fine. Enough for around a ten-twelve people. And three dozen of the gingerbread squares."

"$84, and I'll have that up just as quick as I can. The lemon chicken travels better than the a la king."

Callisto pulls out several bills. "I believe Angelus set up a tab for me here for this week, does it cover this or do I owe you anything extra?"

"oh! You're Callisto! Why didn't you say so before, baby? The tab is fully covered."

She has five takeout bags ready and passes them over without taking any of Callisto's money.

"I didn't want to presume." Grinning Callisto takes the bags. "Thanks for the food. My friends will appreciate it."
