A nice morning in Fandom Town

It was a nice morning when Salmoneus stepped outside. He looked once more in the box for messages, then shrugged and just stood on the porch for a moment. It was peaceful, and he reflected that he really didn’t mind being in fandom town. Zombies notwithstanding, he’d had a good time so far and he was looking forward to getting out a little more.

That afternoon he was taking the Harpy out to the park. Since watching Medusa communicate with her, Salmoneus had tried to be a little more careful with her needs. He even left a nightlight on near the vault and put a little stuffed animal by her bed. The banker was looking forward to the time outside himself.

But first, he had a bank to run. After all, there would be parents from the school in today, and that meant more customers for fleecing. With a smile, he turned and hung up the new announcement.

The bank will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday,
And will open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Shane steps inside the bank, pulling her sunglasses down a little and taking a quick look around.

"Good afternoon!" Salmoneus waves at the young woman as he gets up from his desk and moves towards his counter. "And what can I do for you this fine Friday?"

"Hi," Shane says, smiling as she approaches the counter, slipping her sunglasses off as she goes. She hooks them into the collar of her shirt, placing both hands lightly on the edge of the counter top. "Umm, I was wondering. Do you have safety deposit boxes here?"

He smiles. "We do, and they're available at the very reasonable rate of 6 months for just $28. The room is next to the vault, and it is private." Salmoneus looked serious for a moment. "You know, of course, that you can't store anything flammable or combustible. That includes explosives, weapons, gunpowder, grenades, or wands, working or not. I also suggest you don't use it to hold anything alive, edible, or that has a strong scent. But if that works for you," he smiled and pulled a brochure from under his counter, "here's the application."

Shane listens to the rules and can't help but chuckle as she starts filling out the application. "It's not anything dangerous," she murmurs. "Just a pair of bracelets a friend gave me."

"Bracelets? Hm." He looks thoughtful as he watches her. "I'm guessing that they're either very expensive bracelets, or," he leans closer and lowers his voice, "this is a very special friend."

Shane doesn't look up from what she's doing, but one corner of her mouth curls into a grin. "He's a very good friend," she says. "One of his kids kinda wrecked something of mine and he gave me the bracelets to make it up to me."

"How very sweet. I hope whatever was ruined wasn't very expensive didn't have a lot of sentimental value?"

"No," she says with a smile. "It was a tie I got at a thrift store. It kinda got covered in canine drool and filled with fang marks." Shane finishes up the application and slides it back over to him.

Salmoneus smiled. "That's a nice gift to replace an old tie. I'd say that's a special friend indeed." He takes the sheet and looks it over. "Well, everything seems to be in order here, Miss McCutcheon. Or may I call you Shane?" He stamps the application once, then looks up at her. "And that'll be $28 please."

"Just Shane, is fine," she says, returning the smile as she pulls the money out of her pocket and places it up on the counter.

After counting the money, Salmoneus stamps PAID on the application, then writes down the box number.

"You'll have box number nine, Shane. If you'll just step this way, I'll show you the way." He opens the door, but stops her before she can go through. "Better let me go first. She's been napping, and can be a bit testy when she first wakes up."

With that, he moves into the vault room, making sure not to let the door bang into his new customer.

Shane stands just inside the door, eyes following Salmoneus as he goes, curious as to who the 'she' is that he could be referring to.

The Harpy wakes and looks up at them as they enter.

Salmoneus smiles. "Nice nap?" He unlocks and reaches into a lock box next to the door, then takes out two keys. "This is Shane, she's a new customer." Still looking sleepy, the Harpy trills at Shane.

Closing the box and locking it, the banker then goes to another door to the left of the vault, not far from the creature. Unlocking the door, he then turns on a light and glances back at his new customer. "Right in here, Shane."

Shane can't help but stare at the creature as she follows Salmoneus into the other room. "Uhh, yeah, c-coming," she murmurs. Turning to follow him inside, she frowns a little. "Umm, what... what is that?" She asks quietly, jerking her thumb back behind her in the direction of the harpy.

"That's the Harpy. The one mentioned in the flyer out front about the contest?"

Going into the small room, but leaving the door open, he pulls down box four. "She's my security here. She's docile enough as long as she knows you're supposed to be here, but if someone tried to break in?" Remembering the zombies, he shuddered.

After turning the key, he withdrew it from the lock and turned to Shane. "Just use your key in the other lock, and the box will open. I'll leave you alone here to let you put your bracelets in. When you're ready to go, just lock the box and open the door. After I lock up, I'll walk you back to the front." With that, he waves her into the room, standing beside the open door.

"Thank you," she says, offering him a quick smile as she steps into the room, already reaching into her pocket as she goes.

While waiting, Salmoneus stands next to the Harpy and scratches her neck. "You want to go for a walk tonight? Or just sit out on the porch? Hm?"

He listens for other customers to come in, and watches for the door to open.

A few minutes later, the door opens and Shane steps out. "All done," she says, smiling. "Thanks."

Smiling, Salmoneus steps back in the room to lock the box. Once done, he puts it back in slot number four and then locks the door to the room. He leads Shane back out to the main room.

"Well, thanks for coming in. I'm glad we could be of service. If I can do anything else, just let me know." He offers her a hand. "And don't forget to stop outside and drop in an entry for our name the Harpy contest. If your entry is chosen, you get a free dinner for two at Deb's Diva Dive!"

Shane chuckles as she takes his hand and shakes with him. "I'd do that, but it's probably against the rules," she murmurs. "I work at Deb's. I'm a waitress."

"Really." His smile gets wider. "Well, tell her I said hi and I might be in over the weekend. "And don't be afraid to enter anyway. If you win -- well, I'm sure we'll work something out." He waves. "Have a great afternoon, Shane."

"I'll tell her," she says with a grin, giving him a quick wave as she heads to the door, slipping her sunglasses back on as she goes. "You, too! I'll see you."

After study hall, Chewbacca sent Han to the bank. He walked in, automatically checking the exits, the security set up and the staffing. He shook his head reminding himself he was asking about exchange rates not planning to rob it.

Salmoneus, who had just been listening to that damned ringing again, looks up to see the young man. "Well, hi there!" He rubs his hands together. "And what can I do for you, my young friend?"

"Um, shouldn't you get the phone?" Han looks at it ringing on the wall.

"Phone?" Salmoneus looks puzzled, then follows Han's line of sight. "That's a phone?" It rings again. "What does it do besides annoy the hell out of me ring?"

Han walks over and pick it up before it stops. "Fandom Town Bank, how can we help you today?"

He then hands the receiver to Salmoneus, tapping the bottom, "Talk here" he says softly.

A loud voice begins coming from the phone and Salmoneus gingerly puts his ear to it like he saw the young man do. Suddenly he stands straight up.

"Yes, Sir. I't's me, Sir. No, Sir." More loud yelling, and Salmoneus holds the instrument away from his ear for a moment. His voice gets softer. "Yes. Yes, Sir. Yes, Sir. Good--" The voice disappears, and Salmoneus looks angrily at the part in his hand.

"That's what it does? That's what that ringing was all about? Pick up this pon-- phlo-- whatever, and have Hades yell at me?" He drops the thing to the floor and thinks about stomping on it or feeding it to the Harpy or something. Then he remembers the young man and looks up at him. His smile suddenly returns, strained though it is.

"Thank you for the lesson on using the pone. It was kind of you to help. Now, what can I do for you?"

"I needed to ask, about the Imperial Credit exchange rate. Does it go the other way? One dollar to 80 credits? Can you have an ample supply of Imperial Credits by the end of the school year? Dollars are no good where I'm going this summer."

The banker's smile becomes a little more genuine now that he's talking about actual money.

"Yes, if you wish to trade in dollars for Imperial Credits, I can do that. It could take me a little while, since my contact isn't all that reliable -- hence the high rate of exchange. Also, after Parents Weekend, there will be a small fee for all currency exchanges over 100 dollars, modern. This fee is waived, however, if you have an account with us." He moves over to the counter, motioning for the younger man to do the same. "I believe opening an account is your best option. That way you can take what you need when you go for the summer, knowing you have the rest safely put away for when you get back."

"I'll talk to my guardian about it. Gotta have his signature anyway, since earthers still think I'm a minor. Not sure we'll be back after summer, either."

"But yeah, we'll probably be in later on. Thanks."

Han turns to go.
