In the Park

Gabrielle waits in the park to meet up with Inara who invited her to dinner, she seems a lot more pleasant than she was this morning.

Inara walks into the park and spots Gabrielle easily enough. "Hey, Gabrielle. How are you this evening?"

"Better than I was this morning." Gabby tells her. "Stupid Carlos."

She hazards a guess. "Ex-husband?"

"Current actually." Gabrielle tells her. "Okay...so I had a little affair, he messed with my birth control and took away eighteen years of my life." she says, Gabby had always told Carlos she didn't want kids.

Inara blinks. That's very up-front.

"He took away eighteen years of your life?" She indicates the sidewalk towards the restaurant. "This way. If you want to talk about it..."

"Well yeah, because I'm pregnant and it's all his fault." Gabby exclaims. "We can go now."

"So, when's the baby due?" asked Inara. "And should you be walking? We can hail a taxi if you need."

"I can walk, it'll be awhile. I don't even want a baby. I never did, and Carlos knows it."

"I'm guessing he wanted the baby since he messed with your birth control pills?"

"Yes, bastard." Gabby says. "And the worst part is, he might not be the father."

"He might not--?" Inara stops. "Oh, the affair you had." She never thought that being a Companion might be a simpler life than marrying some man and being a dutiful social wife. "So, does the other man know? About your pregnancy and that he might be the father?"

"Yes, but I doctored the paternity test so Carlos thinks he is the father." Gabrielle says. "John can't support a child."

"Your life seems confusing compared to mine," she says, wryly. "So is that why you're in Fandomtown? Because of the baby?"

"Change of scenery I guess." Gabs says. "Plus my friend Bree lives here somewhere."

They draw up in front of the restaurant - not the Russian one, but another one that Inara chose. "I couldn't get bookings for the Russian restaurant I mentioned the other night, but this one comes with a recommendation."

And she adds, "If she's not in the town, you might try up at the school. They probably have lists on all their staff. They have very good records. Superlatively good, in fact."

Gabby nods, "I'm sure she'll find me." she says. "This place looks good."

"So," Inara says once they're seated, "you run a modelling agency. Have you seen any of the girls in the town that you think might be suited to modelling work?"

Or all of them, given that this is FH.

She nods. "I've met a few girls from the school that are interested."

"I imagine a few girls would be interested in that." Inara's definitely not immune to the idea of the glamour that surrounds certain jobs. "What do you do outside of your modelling agency?"

"Spend my husband's money." She announces proudly.

"But what do you spend it on?"

"Clothes, shoes, lots of stuff."

"I guess you'd have been shopping around the town, then? Tell me, which shops would you recommend?"

"I haven't done much yet, I usually ebay it." Gabby announces. "At least for now, maybe we can go shopping together, sometime. Explore the shops together."
