After the greenhouse

Lana left the greenhouse, feeling a little off-balanced and flustered. She wasn't quite sure what had just happened. She wandered back to the town proper and into the park to sit down adn think for a while.

Maia was coming back from Aziraphales bookstore and spotted Lana. "Hey Lana. How are you tonight?"

Lana jumps and looks very startled for a moment. "Oh, Maia. I'm good, I think..." She looks as if she's going to say something else, then stops herself.

Maia tilts her head and sits down. "You think? Whats the matter?"

"I... " Lana shakes her head. "I don't know." She makes a face. "I just spent the afternoon with Professor Quayle. It was... I... God, I don't know."

"Yes." Lana shakes her head again. "Maia, I was thinking things I definitely should not have been thinking."

Maia blushes "Yeah I know the feeling. He is so..." Maia breathes out slowly. "So intense you know. I used to go talk to him when I was dating Sara and oh goodness I had to stop because I just.. I dunno.."

"He invited me back to show me his amaryllis and they were so beautiful I had to touch them and he reached out to touch the same one and our fingers..." Lana shivers. "I couldn't breathe, But then I went and asked him about his wife. I had no idea she'd been killed recently. I felt like such an idiot."

Maia looked up and nodded sadly "Yeah it- it was really sudden I think. I found him crying one day it was awful. He really loved her but" Maia pauses "So do you like him?"

"What?" Lana looks startled. "What do you mean, do I like him. He's my professor. I... It would be totally inappropriate..." She blushes fiercely.

"Maia..." Lana searches desperately for some way to express her confusion. "I barely know him. I spent a few hours with him on Saturday and then today. God, he's got to be twice my age. And he'd never look twice at me!"

"He is." Lana glanced over at Maia. "I don't mean to be so abrupt. I think it all just kind of threw me. I didn't expect to find anyone there, but all of a sudden there he was. And when he told me that his wife had died I just... I don't know why, I just reached out and put my hand on his arm and he just *looked* at me."

Lana let out a deep breath. "And I think maybe he wanted to touch me back. And I think maybe I wanted him to."

Maia smiled thinking over all the times with Justin and that intensity he gave off without trying. "I am sure he did." Maia squeezed Lana's hand. "Are you going on the field trip?"

"To Africa?" Lana asked. "I talked to him about it Saturday and he said it might have to wait till summer - he had to check with the Dean. But I think he was glad I showed an interest in going." She smiled, remembering how happy he'd looked.

"But he loves the place so much. And I think maybe he feels closer to her there." Lana flushes. "I don't know. I'm sure you know him much better than I do."

Maia laughed "Maybe, he is really open though, I mean, you'll know just as much as me after a few visits I am sure. Just ask him stuff he is really nice and he is a good listener as well."

Lana smiled at her friend. "Thanks, Maia." She glances down at her watch, "God, it's getting late. I still have to work on my biology for tomorrow,w. I've got to get home." She hugs Maia. "We'll get together tomorrow sometime?"
