Maia walked slowly next to Lana, her eyes closed slightly breathing in the night air. She slowly opened them again when Lana started to talk. "Yeah I know what you mean. Its total crap we have a curfew now on the weekend even."

Lana nods. "It's a pain, but I can certainly understand why they're doing it."

Maia shrugged for a moment looking put off. "Well its not like you wouldn't be safe with me you know. If that's their concern. I'd see it coming if something were going to come." Maia's voice had a hard edge to it, her playful mood seeming to have been left in the diner in the face of having to return to the dorms on such a beautiful night.

Lana shrugged, "I suppose that's true, but you can't be with everyone, everywhere, right?" The night was too nice for Lana to let anything really get to her.

Maia ran her hands through her hair and sighed. "Yeah your right." Maia glanced around and sighed again. "Hey Lana, if I told you something, would it just be between us and you wouldn't tell anyone?"

Lana looked over at her. "Absolutely. You don't even need to ask."

Maia stopped walking now. "Paige came into my room this morning, with her new kitten and well.." Maia sighed now "Well I said some stuff to her and well I kissed her. I don't know what came over me to do it, I mean I think she is pretty and she's my best friend and well one thing led to another and I kissed her."

Lana stopped walking and looked at Maia. "Really? I didn't think Paige swung that way. I mean, you know, with Sawyer and Geoff and all." She flushed a little, hoping that hadn't come out wrong.

"Anyway... how did she take it?"

Maia looked pained for a moment. "Sh-she uh, well she kissed me back actually."

Lana tried not to look surprised, but knew she probably had failed completely. She was still really a small town girl at heart and even though she knew and accepted all of this stuff intellectually, it was still something she didn't quite know how to handle. "Really?" she said again. "I guess... Is that a good thing?"

Maia shrugged. "Not really. She um, well she is sort of freaked out by it you know. She told Sawyer but" Maia looks a little angry now "She made it out like it was all me, that she didn't kiss me back. I mean I am not in love with her like that I just, well I wanted to kiss her you know. I've always had a little crush on her since I met her." Maia looked sad now. "She didn't tell him she kissed me back." Maia shook her head. "I saw her, at Red's deal tonight and I told her that I saw her telling Sawyer, which, well for the most part it was true but I didn't see all of it. I kinda made her think I had seen it. I-well I still had her kiss on my lips and sometimes..well sometimes thats all it takes for me to get sight of someone." Maia sighed heavily, "I think it bothered me more then anything that she didn't admit she kissed me back. It hurt my feelings a little. I asked her, if she was ashamed of kissing me and she said she wasn't but that she had her reputation and stuff to deal with and how people think she is a slut. I told her that I didn't care about her reputation and I dont... I never have." Maia looks hurt again but resolved. "I told her that I would never do that again unless she wanted me to. I won't either, I am scared it is going to ruin our friendship and she is afraid too. I think that if she is not honest with Sawyer and most of all herself it is going to be worse in the long run for everyone involved. She is worried about sparing feelings now but in the future those feelings are going to feel even more betrayed because she was not honest about it you know." Maia finishes watching Lana closely not wanting Lana to think Maia was going to run up and kiss her or ever try anything with her. She was a little worried that Lana would think that now.

Lana was quiet for a minute, trying to think how best to answer. "Well, it is a pretty tough time for Paige right now in terms of that sort of thing," she said finally. "I don't think I can blame her for not wanting to tell Sawyer - at least not right away - not after the way Geoff just let her go the way he did."

"And *you* may not care about her reputation, but she's the one who has to deal with the fall-out from it. It's got to be a pretty tough thing to deal with."

Lana sighed, "And you know, I don't think Paige can hide anything for long. She seems to be pretty honest about that stuff. It just takes her a while to face it. I'm sorry you were hurt though."

Maia shrugged looking away from Lana. "I'm ok." Maia's voice had a false toughness to it. "Paige is fine or she will be." Maia shrugged and then looked at Lana. "You do know that I would never do that to you right? I mean I would never ever do that."

Lana looks surprised again. Despite the conversation in the diner, it's something that had never seriously crossed her mind. "I guess I never even really thought about it," she said slowly, not wanting to hurt Maia's feelings. "I just don't think of women that way and it never occurred to me that you would... well..." She flushed then threw up her hands, figuring that anything she said would just make things worse.

"No, I don't think you'd ever do that to me. Which is probably good, 'cause I'd probably freak out a little. Sorry." She looked rather embarrassed and ashamed.

Maia laughed in relief. "Oh no I am glad. I didn't want you thinking I would ever do it. I mean I know you don't like girls like that." Maia smiled at her. "Good that is settled then... not that it needed to be." Maia laughed again.

Lana still looked a little unsure about whether her words had come out right, but gave Maia a smile anyway. "Well, if you're happy, then I'm happy,' she said lightly. "And yes, I guess we're all clear on that now."

Maia giggled. "So anyway. When are you going to see Justin again?"

Lana sighed. "I don't know. Nothing's changed since I talked to you earlier. I thought at least I'd see him in class today, but he cancelled it and I don't know where he was. I don't want to just go to his house. I know he's worried about all the ramifications of what an "us" could be and wanted to talk to someone and figure some things out, so..." She shrugged, looking a bit sad. "I have my own worries about it too, so I can't fault him for it."

Maia tilts her head. "What are you worried about? Besides him being a teacher and older."

Lana stopped again and looked at her. "*Besides* his being a teacher and being more than twice my age? Maia, those are two pretty huge things. I know people say age doesn't matter, but 17 to 40 is a pretty huge age gap. And he's not just a teacher, he's *my* teacher - though I suppose I could drop gardening and add something else." She sighs. "I'm really just an old-fashioned girl, Maia. Maybe too much so for my own good."

Maia laughed wholeheartedly now. "Oh darling girl. I wager I am older then you underneath it all." She shakes her head laughing and then settles it to a giggle. "I'm sorry I shouldn't laugh. I know those are very real concerns sweetie. Have you talked about them with Justin?"

She shook her head. "No, everything just happened so fast. I did ask him where we went from here, and he said he had no idea, that he felt he needed to talk to someone about it. I think we both hope things will work out, but there could be problems for both of us."

Maia frowned and nodded. "Yeah. For what its worth. I hope he makes you happy." Maia gave Lana a warm smile.

"Sometimes I think I'm not meant to be happy," Lana says very softly. "At least not long term. Everyone I've ever really loved has died or gone away. Sometimes I think I'm jinxed."

Maia looked at her sadly. "Its not your fault that they died Lana." Maia said. She herself was an orphan and always had felt that connection with Lana since she had found out about the girls story.

"It's not just my parents, Maia. It's everyone. Friends, my boyfriend, Whitney... It's like anytime someone gets close to me something terrible happens. Even Archie. I may not remember him, but he's gone, isn't he? One way or another he's gone."

[OOC: IT's true in canon - both that this happens and that Lana feels this way. Almost anyone who gets close to her... something happens.]

Maia stopped walking again and faced her. "I don't know what happened with Archie but that is his issue to deal with Lana. I am sorry for what happened in your past, with your friends and your boyfriend. But this is here and now and I am close to you and I'm not going anywhere, Justin isn't either." Maia tries to give her a reassuring smile.

"We'll see," Lana said with a wistful smile. "Maybe this time things will be different."

Maia nodded and they started to walk again. "I hope so Lana."

They walked the rest of the way in silent companionship. Once back at the dorms, Lana gave Maia a quick hug and then headed up to the West Attic for a little more contemplation before going to bed.
