The Perk - Saturday morning

Veronica enters the coffee shop, orders a very large chai latte, and settles in at a table in the corner with her laptop.

She's working on her newspaper article and planning her investigation into Kitty's death.

"No, Sebacean. You really didn't know?" She's surprised John never mentioned that to him.

"I'm not sure. I haven't talked to John yet today."

"'Sebacean'? That's a really pretty name for a race," Lee says and thinks about asking John for more information as omg, Aeryn is kinda scary despite how nice she is right now.

"Well, you should come. Logan throws a good party and yesterday, John and I were talking about going..."

"I think you're the first person to ever say anything about Sebaceans is pretty." In fact, it's a little weird to hear it. The people here obviously don't know her race at all.

"I might stop in for a while. I know I was at the first one he had. And yet I don't think I've ever actually met Logan. Have you?"

Lee grins, "well, we're both rather alien to each other, aren't we? Us Colonials can blend in sorta with the other humans on the 13th Colony, but we come from quite a different background and world and world view, you know?"

"I've never met Logan, actually," Lee says rolling his eyes. "But I've certainly heard of him..."

"I don't really know all that much about where you come from. I don't have the first clue about your world view. I'm still not entirely sure about this pyramid thing Kara and Anders are doing," she admits.

She pauses. "Actually... He may have been involved in the reason I hate vodka, now that I think about it."

"Well, you'll have to see Anders and Kara play pyramid -- it's a great sport. Very entertaining," he says with a mildly pride tone.

"Hrm?"

"One of these times." She really has been meaning to, it just hasn't happened.

"The night of the... truth or dare," Aeryn says uncomfortably. "I learned a couple of important lessons that night and one of them is that vodka is not my drink."

Lee feels very guilty about that truth or dare night and looks down at his knees. "Yeah, earth booze isn't quite my thing either."

Having finished his coffee, he leans back in his chair. "So. John Crichton."

Aeryn almost expected this. "What about him?"

"Well, he's my best friend and he's your boyfriend. I feel like something's definitely missing that we haven't braided each other's hair yet, or something," Lee says, trying to be funny.

It takes her a moment to figure out the hair-braiding thing. "I know, I'm surprised we haven't spent more time together. It's been... busy."

"John's a great guy," Lee says not without a wee bit of angst in his voice, "Really great guy. Always has my back."

Aeryn nods. "He is. And I'm not trying to hurt him."

Lee blinks as Aeryn answered the question he didn't ask. "Oh. I would never --" he says awkwardly. Finally he says, "that's good."

"I just wanted you to know that," she tells him, sipping her coffee.

"Thank you," he says softly and looks at the dregs of coffee and milk in his empty cup.

"Any word on Kara's pyramid scout?" she asks, changing the subject.

Thankful for the change in subject, Lee straightens and shakes his head. "Not yet, but we should be hearing from them soon. She and Anders have been training hard..."

"Good. The waiting has got to be nerve-wracking."

"I'll be feeling it myself when I get this damned war college application in," he says. "So...what's the process in becoming a peacekeeper?"

"Not much of a process, really. You're either born into it, or conscripted. I'm sure there have been a couple who joined up willingly when they were older, but they'd be way behind the rest of us. It's not generally done," she explains.

"What's the structure of the...it's a military organization, right?"

"Right. Peacekeeper command is where all the highest ranking officers are, where all the orders come from. Below that are the captains of their command carriers or respective bases, and several more that share the rank but command smaller teams, like Marauders. I think the rankings are mostly like what they have here," she says. "What's yours like?"

"The Colonial Fleet sounds rather similar. Do you have land forces as well as the naval ships?"

"Sorry, not naval. Spaceships," she corrects, though she kind of hates the word. "I'm a pilot, but I am trained for ground assaults. We do what we need to."
