Red's - Open for Business

Red trotted around his shop, fussing with things in an obsessive need to feel back at home in his space. After spending all day cooped up in the office, he was feeling the freedom his shop afforded him. Touch touch touch...all things that had him and his scented all over it.

Once he was feeling a bit more at ease, he leapt up onto his stool and started to pull together receipts to send off to his accountant.

Ben shook off his umbrella under the eaves out front and closed it before coming into the store. "Hey Red. Did you get any response on that question I had for you? About the magic protection?"

"Yeah, I do. Those two are practically family." He thinks for a moment, and adds, "Although a family with well-kept secrets, if this is any indication. She practices magic?"

Ben smiled. "It's okay. Really. If you want to make the arrangement, I'll pretend you didn't mention who it was. And if I were to trust anyone with magic, it would be Tara." He nods. "I was worried about knowing who to trust with this, and she would be ideal."

Ben shook his head. "More like the changing of the world. All this with the girl who was killed, and people disappearing...hard to trust when you don't know who you're talking to, or when they might just vanish. This place seems so safe on the surface, but there's a lot of danger underneath." Ben thought about his book, and plotbunnies bounced into his brain. He shook his head to settle them out. "Please do get a discussion started with Tara. You are welcome to let her know it was me who was inquiring, if you haven't already. That should set things into motion."

"Not a problem, Red. I've been a little preoccupied myself, trying to finish my book."

He gazed out the window with Red. "And as mayor, I'm sure you feel particularly responsible for this stuff going on. If there's anything I can do, let me know. I've been through some of this, sort of, before.

"Where we're from, gay rights are not particularly popular with some people. They were trying to take some of our rights away, with a law they were going to put on the books. We had a fundraiser to oppose the law, and someone planted a bomb in the place." Ben shook his head and took a deep breath. "Michael got caught in the blast. He could have died. Some other people we know did." Ben sighed. "The fundraiser was in the middle of the gay district, someplace we thought we were safe. It was a tough reminder that if someone really has it out for you, they can get you."

((ooc: I have so much love for QAF canon right now...so many good stories for my characters to reiterate. :) ))

"Needless to say, so am I." Ben shakes his head. "You never know what will bring out the worst in people, either. I've done my share of things that are not okay; I think we all have. It's the lengths to which some people will go that still manages to astonish me."

"Well, I'd better get out of here before the sky completely opens up and downpours. Let me know when you get things started with Tara. And definitely let me know if there's something I can help you with in terms of the town. My time's pretty much my own right now."

Ben nodded. "I will. At least it's not snow. Yet." He stepped outside, opened up his umbrella and stepped out into the rain.

Just after 9am, Aaron pushed through the door. "'Mornin', Red. How're you this morning?" After shaking the water off his slicker, he hung it on the coatrack in the corner before heading behind the counter. "Shane stopped by yesterday to say hi." Shaking his head a little to get stray droplets off his brown hair, he pushed it out of his eyes with a hand. It actually stayed back off his forehead damply.

Aaron nodded and began setting up for the day's appointments. "How's the docket for today?"
