Jack's Roses --- Open

After Ethics class, Buffy heads into town and opens up the flower shop. She turns the sign on so that it says "Open" and then she begins setting up new displays of roses. She's at the front counter separating long stemmed red roses.

Buffy looked at him for a moment and then nodded. "Yeah...rough is a good way to describe it." Of course, after Ethics in Study Hall it got worse when I threatened your girlfriend.

"Yeah, that's why I'm here -- figured I would get some roses for Phoebe since she was pretty shaken up," he said. I guess it's fortunate for you I missed that or I might be more grr argh.

Buffy nodded and turned to the roses. She was currently picking her way through the roses, touching each one to make sure they're fresh.

"How about six?" Bel said, watching Buffy handle the roses with keen interest. "Don't want to spoil her too much," he jokingly added.

Buffy nodded and selected six that were crimson the colour of blood. She turns to Belthazor, holding them up. "These?"

Bel pulled $30 from his wallet and handed it to Buffy. Leaning on the counter, he looked closely at Buffy and said, "Say, that's a very pretty shade of lipstick you have on." He grinned. "And that sounded like a total come-on, didn't it?"

Bel took the tube and inspected it, looking slightly befuddled. "They all look alike to me," he said, chuckling. "I don't know anything about girls and their makeup, but I've been shopping for Yule gifts for Phoebe and thought she might like something like this. Do you mind if I borrow yours so I can find it at the store? I'll never remember if I don't have it. I'll bring it back to you tonight, I promise."

Buffy thought this was an odd request, but she nodded. "Make sure you tell your girlfriend the truth if she catches you with it. I don't need to get in trouble for beating up the school president."

Bel raised an eyebrow, a little confused. "Phoebe was upset because Angelus killed her roommate," he said. "I think by the end of the conversation she was liking Angel more than Angelus." And it's not her you have to worry about.

Bel wasn't sure whether to take that as a veiled threat to Phoebe if he took action against Angel, or if the Slayer's perceptions were completely out of whack. Given the hair color, he suspected the latter. "Then you," he said carefully, "aren't too bright, little girl."

Buffy smiled at Belthazor and it wasn't a pleasant smile. "I'm not as stupid as she looks, Belthazor. I talked to a birdie this morning and she told me what you have planned." She tilted her head. "I'd rethink that course of action if I were you."

Belthazor laughed. "You may slay demons, Buffy, but I doubt I'm anything like any you've dealt with before. You can threaten me all you want, but if you continue to threaten and insult my girlfriend, who, by all accounts, is on the same side as you? Then you are as stupid as you look."

Buffy stared at him and then laughed bitterly.

"You really do believe that, don't you?" Buffy braced her hands on the counter. "Angelus is a liar, a first class manipulator and a murderer. If you bring him back, he won't only kill Phoebe, he will kill her slowly and he will have fun doing it. She is a witch, and therefore can be a threat to him. He will not take that chance --- not even for you."
