Buffy looks up and sees Maia. She turns to her, not sure what to say.

"Hey Buffy. Listen I just wanted to apologize for the other day in the library."

Buffy nods. "I wasn't exactly without blame...but I had to know if Phoebe..."

Maia nodded "I know and.." Maia sighed "Its hard you know, Angelus does all this stuff and we all remember it and then he's Angel and everything is supposed to be ok but we're all still us and we remember what he did...I mean...we don't know him, the way you do so its still sort of scary to know what that side of him did." Maia said trying to explain and thinking she just did a terrible job of it.

Buffy nods faintly. "I know. You guys don't know both sides of him, but I do." She sighs. "I had to make sure that Phoebe was genuine in her concern for what Belthazor might do and wasn't trying to set him up."

"Everything Phoebe does is genuine, if she has concerns they are I am sure very well founded...I can't see her setting anyone up, even Angelus..Angel sorry."

Buffy ponders this for a second and then she looks at Maia.

"If it came down to it, would Phoebe be willing to stop the man she loves from doing something to someone, or would she pretend not to know about it?"

Maia's mouth fell open slightly for a moment, she thought for a few minutes quietly, weighing out everything in her mind before answering carefully "Phoebe would do what ultimatly is the right thing to do for the greater good." Maia shivered a little, Phoebe saw, not as intense as Maia but she did see things. "Even if the choices that she makes do not make sense at the time to people, in the end though it is what has to happen." Maia finished quietly.

Buffy nods. "So if it came to making a choice between siding with Belthazor and saving Angel...she'd do the right thing?"

Maia bit her lip in thought, she looked at the counter top trying to focus on Phoebe in her mind but not really seeing her, Maia decided to go with the trust she had in her friend, her 'sister' "I think she would if that was the right thing to do yes."

Buffy nods.

"Belthazor is going to try to bring back Angelus. Phoebe needs to stop him."

Maia looked thoughtful again debating it in her head, she scratched her chin thinking. "Why does Phoebe need to stop him?" She said in a questioning voice "What if him not being Angel is what needs to happen, there can be no good without evil, what if he is a balance for the evil side against the good and him being good is throwing everything off?"

"Because the first thing Angelus will do is kill Tara, then Piper, then Phoebe...and he won't kill them quickly or humanely. He will torture them and make them hurt before they finally beg for death. Then he will leave parts of them for their loved ones."

Maia looked stunned, "He'll k-kill Phoebe and Piper..." Maia tried to imagine life without Phoebe in it "I-I think she would stop him then..I-" Maia looked devestated

Buffy reaches over and grabs Maia's hand, squeezing it gently.

"They're witches who could put a soul back into him."

Maia's body shakes "I-Buffy" She whispered "You don't, you don't think she is going to help him... help Bel do that...is he planning that." Maia's voice is stricken she had thought Buffy was simply posing a hypothetical situation but now the whole conversation had just taken on a spin Maia had not anticipated.

Buffy sighs softly. "I don't think she'd help him, no. What I need to know from you, because you know her so well, is if she would try to stop Belthazor."

Maia tried to focus on Phoebe again, she felt Buffy's hand in hers but in her mind she saw Buffy slipping away, Phoebe slipping away... Everything got lost in a swirl of color, she squeezed Buffy's hand tightly and breathed hard for a few moments. "Yeah I think, I think she would, if she understood the danger."

Buffy nods. "That's why I was pushing her. If she had been defensive, then I would have known she couldn't be trusted."

Maia looked terrible now, she had been mean to Buffy, had not even stopped and thought about it or question it. "Buffy I- Oh I am so sorry about the other day I- I didn't know I just saw you there and heard you and saw Phoebe look upset.." Maia looked close to tears now.

"Relax. You were defending your friend."

Maia shook her head "But the things that I said to you, about Angel and stuff, I- it was wrong of me to strike at you like that. I should have been calm and talked to you."

Buffy smiles. "You should see me defending my friend Xander, sometime. When you're protecting someone you love, rationality goes right out the window."

Maia nodded and then her eyes went wide "Buffy..I-I called Belthazor after study hall...I-Oh God.."

Buffy pales. "What did you tell him?"

Maia let out a shuddering breath "I told him you were threatning Phoebe. He-he said he had talked to you a few days ago and that if you have a problem with him to come to him and that he was pissed off." Maia swallowed hard "I-I didn't know I thought you were trying to hurt her and well I called him because he is able to protect her better then I can but-" Maia shivered "Who is going to protect her from him if it comes down to that?"

Buffy bites her lip. "Here is what you do. You continue feeding Belthazor information that I'm threatening Phoebe. That'll draw his attention off of her and focus it on me. You keep an eye on her and I'll set up protection for her in case she needs it."

Maia nodded hesitantly, she was scared of Belthazor but loved Phoebe and wanted to keep her safe. "Ok." She said swallowing hard "I'm going away for the holidays, when the term ends...you don't think something will happen then do you?" Maia swallowed hard again "What kind of protection?"
