The Perk [Thursday Morning - 8am FHT]

Veronica entered The Perk around eight on Thursday morning. She ordered herself a chai latte and grabbed a table in the corner for her interview with Jake.

Wondering why he'd thought getting up this early was a good idea, Jake entered the Perk in a sleepy shuffle. He got caffeinated and went to join V.

"Good morning," she said, smiling up at him. "Thanks for meeting me. We'll just jump right in since you have class. When did you first realize you were a mutant?"

Jake sipped his coffee before answering. "I think I've always known. There are mutants who don't know what they are until puberty when their powers or whatever manifest, but I've always been able to... talk... to my cells. That's what makes me all mutant-y, by the way. I can sort of talk to my cells and tell them what to do. "

"Would you call yourself a shapeshifter?" she asked, scribbling some notes. "And can you give me an example of how you've used your mutation?" She took a drink of her chai while he answered.

"I... No, I wouldn't, not really." Jake shook his head. "I use it sometimes, but mainly when I can't be bothered to explain the whole thing. And..." He grinned. "I use it a lot in Bio, but you don't have to mention that. Um." He tilted his head. His eyes slowly turned yellow while his hair paled to white. "I can do that, although usually I try for blending in a bit more."

Veronica looked suitably impressed. "So what are the practical applications of a mutation like yours?"

"Um, well, I don't get sick or poisoned or whatever. And apparently I can survive a gunshot through the head."

Veronica almost choked on the sip of tea she had just taken. After coughing for a minute, she looked at Jake, wide-eyed. "What?"

"Yeah, I went home with Krycek for Thanksgiving." He made a face. "Didn't go that well, as you might imagine."

"I... wow. How did your mutation help you?" she asked, completely floored by this information. She vaguely remembered hearing something on the radio about Jake getting shot, but since he had seemed in reasonably good health, she'd dismissed it as a joke or misinformation, cause she of all people knew how the radio had a tendency to get things wrong. "And I'm glad that you're okay, by the way," she added, almost as an afterthought.

Jake snickered at that. "Thank you. Uh, I have a..." He waved his hand. "Healing reflex? My body heals itself even when I'm not in control. Which I didn't know until right then, by the way. So that was... Interesting."

"Sounds like a handy thing to have," she commented. "Okay, anyway," she looked at her notes. "What kind of impact has being a mutant had on your experiences here at Fandom High? Have you felt persecuted for being different or do you find that with the variety of non-human students you're more accepted here than somewhere else?"

Jake sipped his coffee, thinking. "I think... definitely more accepted here than I would be at home. But my, uh, powers are neither offensive nor defensive, really. So whatever I do won't really matter to most of the students, you know?"

Veronica nodded. "Are there any preconceived notions about mutants you'd like to clear up?"

[ooc: So we had to pre-play this via email b/c of time zone & availability issues and we didn't quite finish, but I needed the log in game so V can write her newspaper article this week. Jake's player is afk until Saturday I believe and I'm heading to work, so feel free to use this post for your own Perk threads, but unfortunately, neither of them will be available for interaction.]
