Sunday Morning Mass

[She wakes, showers, dresses and eats. Her stomach is a tight knot. This could be the best or worst idea of her life. She hoped he'd hold all questions til the end so the mun has time to either look stuff up or be handwavey and just go with her. She got him up a little late, and walked with him to the Church to listen to the Priest talk about the second Nocturn of Advent, fasting, and almsdeeds.]

Rogue pads into church, shivering from the cold. She kneels, then slides into a booth near the middle of the church and listens attentivly. It's been too long since she's been to Mass, and she really needs the stability of ritual right now.

((this is what I get for having my entire Catholic experience be what I've gotten going with my cousin and her boyfriend. Mass is all in Latin, but then, the entire congrgation is Mexican. They really do it in English, huh? I need to sit in on one of those and find out what I'm missing!))

((Mass in Latin is something of a political statement: it often means you disapprove of the changes at Vatican II, which, among other things, included saying Mass in the native language of the congregation. Mel Gibson hears Mass in Latin.

Some people, of course, just want to hear the Mass they were raised with, and others just like Latin, and others like the local parish with Latin mass better than the other parishes. We've got a similar split going in Episcopalianism: some (me, among them) like the Rite 1 service because it's closer to the original gorgeous 1600 English. Others like the Rite 1 Service because Change Is Bad. This means that preferring Rite 1 correlates with thinking women priests are a bad idea. Life is rough when you're a theological liberal but a linguistic conservative.

[OOC: If most of the local community is English, it'll be in English. If the local community is Spanish, it'll be in Spanish. Ever since the 60s, it's mostly been in whatever the majority language of the community is, unless Latin's requested for a special occasion or it is specifically marked as a Latin Mass. I've been to many masses in English, a few in French and Cree, but only ever one in Latin, which was the specific Latin & Gregorian Mass at Notre Dame de Paris. Leaving his brothers at home, Kadaj stood outside the church for a long time before he finally decided to go in. His curiosity got the better of him and he slipped in the doors, keeping to the back and to the shadows and sliding silently into a pew toward the back where there were no people.

[CJ's hair was unmistakable, peeking out from under her scarf. SHe was with a boy, dark hair cut short, who kept leaning over and speaking to her softly. At one point she got up and walked back, in all appearances to use the bathroom, but once she was out of the sanctuary, muffled giggles could be heard. On her way back in, she drug her hand across the back of Kadaj's hair and along his shoulder, then pausing beside him.]

He tilted his head back to look up at CJ as she passed. Giving her a small smile and a heavy blink, he winged his arms over the back of the pew, his feet kicked out in front of him. Hey, he mouthed to her.

[Looking ahead, watching Jack for a moment, she slides in next to him, leaning close. Speaking lowly, she smiles back.] Hey.

Kadaj slid over so she had room. He watched her for a moment, then his attention went back to the man talking at the front. It wasn't anything that made sense to him but he wasn't there for that.

He was there to see their holy mother. Maybe he was hoping to see her or feel her. Mostly, he was trying to understand.

[Watching him, she only half listened to the Father. She'd heard this Mass every year for her whole life. Well, basically. Not this one.]

He shook his head. "No. Nothing about this religion of yours makes sense to me."

[She jerks her chin forward.] Him either.

Looking to where she gestured, he figured she was talking about the boy that was sitting next to her before she got up. "I'm interrupting."

[She shrugs] No. I'm being rude. He'll be ok.

Kadaj looked at her from under his bangs and he smiled again. "Should we move?"

Kadaj nodded to him and looked at his hand. He remembered Loz mentioning someone that knew CJ and was his son, figuring this was probably the guy.

Taking the offered hand, he gave it a quick shake.

Jack smiles at Kadaj and walks out into the patchy sunshine. It's cold but not bitter, so he buries his hands in his pockets and tips his face up.

Following behind them, Kadaj remained silent. He listened, hoping for more information. Perhaps Jack knew something he didn't.

[Jack shrugs.] I... didn't get a lot of it. I mean, there's a lot of standing up and sitting down and kneeling. And I don't know I agree with a lot of what they said. "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the world and I shall be." Eh. I don't feel unworthy. But I don't have any big objections.

That's why Catholics live so long, Chip. Stand up, sit down, kneel...Ok, not really. [She gives him a wry smile, wishing that she could remember everything she and her brothers had ever mocked about the church when they were 17.}

The standing and sitting and kneeling was what Kadaj found the most confusing but figured it was some ritual thing. "It seems to rely a great deal on ritual," he said softly.

I... liked the sense of everyone doing things at the same time. Everyone knowing that was going to happen next. Everyone doing it for year after year after year.

Religion is essentially that which you do with regularity. It's the faith and belief behind it that makes it important. That's what I think, anyhow.

For power. People come together for support, and community makes each individual stronger than when they're alone.
