Park - Tuesday Morning

Alanna had pulled back her boy-short hair back with a bit of ribbon, grabbed the bag she had packed last night and a sleeping Faithful, and set off for the park to meet Angela. The spell had been in her book, and another version for things that were "alive". It was times like these that Alanna could finally understand what her twin found so fascinating about the Gift.

Angela is in the park, reclined on a bench and keeping an eye open for killer ducks. She springs to her feet when she sees Alanna. "Hey. Did you find what we talked about?"

Angela closes her eyes, centering herself. "Yes," she says. "As ready as I will be, anyhow."

Angela does her best to stand perfectly still, eyes closed, as the girl attempts the spell. She wills it to work. And if it can't work, she thinks, At least let it leave me here, and not transformed into a banana or a toad.

"Mmmhmm?" Angela says, eyes still closed, not wanting to move even enough to talk if there's any chance anything is happening.

Cautiously, she opened her eyes and peered around her. "Not a banana. Still the wrong Angela," she said, sounding discouraged but relieved. "And -- is something glowing over there?"

Angela covers her face with one palm. "I was thinking that I really hoped that if this went wrong, I wouldn't turn into a toad or a banana," she admits. "I'm guessing this isn't how it's supposed to work. Could we try again, if I keep my mind blank?"

The banana appears perfectly innocent, but she's still keeping one eye on it. This town, it might be armed.

Angela concentrates on home; the mushiness of her bed, the deep blue of her bedroom walls, the noise of the traffic outside her window, the Van Gogh print above her desk.

James.

She focuses every bit of her energy on getting beck there, back where she belongs.

"Still me," Angela said glumly. "And all I thought about was my house and how nice it would be to be there."

She notices Alanna appears a little off-balance. "Should I get you some water or something?"

"There was a little bit of a buzzing sound," Angela says hesitantly, giving the cat a look. "But that's about it. Oh, and I think your cat, um, talks."

Angela gives Faithful one more look before deciding to let it go for now. She can't see any glowing, anyhow.

"We don't need to try again tomorrow," she says slowly. "You looked like you really tried, and I don't want you to hurt yourself for this. I can try to find another way home."

If she's blinking, hard, it's not because she's about to cry. Really.

"Okay," Angela says waveringly, dabbing at her eyes with the hankerchief. "I mean, if that will work for you. Seriously, I don't want you to be a toad because you tried to help me."

"Go. Sleep. And ribbit," Angela calls sadly after the leaving girl and cat.

She starts to settle in to a good brood when she notices some ducks flying overhead.

Legions of ducks fly over the park, they don't set down at the pond but just continue to fly towards Blood Gulch Arms.

Angela looks up, shading her eyes.

She wonders whether these are the ducks with knives the Tick warned her about, or the friendly ones Phale liked to fees.

Noticing that they have an audience, one of the ducks breaks formation and flies towards Angela.

Angela steps backward. She's sure the duck isn't actually flying toward her on purpose ... but if it is, she wants to get out of the way.

[identity profile] freelancerchick.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
For a moment, the duck seems to actually aim to land right on top of Angela's head.

Okay, maybe it is flying towards me on purpose.

Angela tucks her head under her arms and bends down, hoping to get out of the duck's way.

The Grunt misses hitting Angela and instead lands behind her. It is however amused at how it scared the girl and smatters gleefully at her.

Angela straightens herself, feeling very foolish for seeming afraid of a duck.

"Are you laughing at me?" she asks the duck. Hey, the cat talked...

[identity profile] freelancerchick.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The Grunt quacks in reply and flaps its wings at Angel before hissing dangerously at her.

This is not good.

Walking backward, Angela stumbles until she hits the path that will take her out of the park, then slowly traces her way to the sidewalk. She never takes her eyes off the hissing fowl.

It seems very menacing. For a duck.

The Grunt - who is not the same grunt as The Grunt in the cinema - feels quite proud of his achievement. He's only just got here on the island and is already scarying the people. Hissing and flapping his wings, he flies after Angela.
