On their way back to Ben and Michael's from the wonderful city of Alexandria, Hunter and Mara stop off for something to eat and a visit to a particularly cherished grandmother. "Two CFS specials, please, my good woman," Hunter says with a cocky grin.

Deb squeals, coming out from behind the counter of the newly remodeled Dive.

"Hunter, baby! You look so good. And Mara. Welcome to Fandom, sweetie. Two CFS coming right up. Just sit anywhere."

She gestures to the diner, almost empty except for a couple of NPC townies drinking coffee and talking sports.


Carl comes over from his usual spot. "How are you kids doing?"

Hunter and Mara both have a hug and kiss for Deb, and Hunter collects a handshake from Carl before he and Mara seat themselves in a booth. "We are doing great," Hunter answers. "Enjoying our time off, including New Year's eve at Caritas here. We hit Alexandria yesterday and spent the night there...and found a little something for Gramma Deb in the process." He puts a bag on the table that contains a fiber optic butterfly in rainbow hues (http://www.bitsandpieces.com/products/sku-08-6023__id-74.html).

"This place looks great, Deb," Mara adds. "You have such a way with making an eatery be homey."

"Oh Hunter, that's gorgeous!" She sets it up on the knick-knack shelf that runs around the whole diner and plugs it in.

She hears the ding from the kitchen and delivers two specials and her own salad with the grilled chicken.

"So, eat and tell me what you think of our weird little town."

The townies have left and she slides into the booth with them.

Hunter digs into his food, looking at his fiancee expectantly. Mara takes a bite of the chicken fried steak first, using the chewing time to contemplate what she's going to say. "It's certainly...different," she begins. "I haven't even seen much of it yet, but that green guy with the horns who runs the karaoke place? Definitely out there. Nice, friendly, but definitely out there." Mara shrugs noncommittally. "I hear there's magic, and your mayor is a...big red canine? Those I haven't witnessed yet, but it's been promised I'll at least meet Red this week. Michael and Ben seem really happy here, though, and you two seem pretty settled, so I'm guessing you all find the weird stuff kinda charming." She tilted her head, and smiled. "And for all the strange faces I might make, I admit that it does exude a je-ne-sais-quoi sort of charm."

Deb laughs.

"I've got to the point where I just think of them as my 'space kid,' my 'time-travel kids' and my 'magic kids.' You really get used it. After the fucking zombies, buying a laser rifle off a space-kid, kids changing genders overnight, talking cats and the haunted house, you learn to shrug and call it Fandom Town.

"I love it sweetie. it's the most gay friendly place I've ever been and that includes Liberty Avenue."

Mara's eyebrows raise higher and higher at the list Deb rolls off. No matter how many times she hears this stuff, it still floors her. At the last statement, though, she nods. "Hunter, Ben and Michael have all commented on that. I noticed at Christmas that Ben and Michael seemed more comfortable than I've ever seen them being openly affectionate, although they still tempered it in public for safety's sake. They seemed eager to be back here, and because of that I can see why. We're really happy they have this place to call home."
